New Queen documentary has unseen footage

Legendary British rock band Queen is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year royally. In addition to the re-master and re-issue of their first five studio albums, BBC documentary Queen: Days of Our Lives was produced by comedian and Queen fan Rhys Thomas, and Simon Lupton, and directed by Matt O’Casey.

“We have set out to make the definitive Queen documentary,” said Rhys Thomas. “It’s a funny, honest, inspiring and ultimately tragic account of ‘a certain band called Queen’, as told by the band themselves. We tell the story of four students who met in West London, slogged hard and conquered the world, ultimately changing rock music forever.”

The two one-hour shows, airing May 29 and 30 at 10:00 p.m. on BBC Two, explore the story of Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and Freddie Mercury – looking into the band’s early struggles, arguments, breakups, triumph, tragedy and an enduring legacy – all against a backdrop of Queen’s distinctive melodies and live performances.

Shown for the first time, the producers uncovered Queen’s first-ever TV performance, which had been missing and believed to have been wiped, along with extensive archival footage including interviews with the late legendary frontman Freddie Mercury.

The band will be previewing the documentaries in a rare live radio interview on BBC Radio 2 on May 27. May and Taylor will also attend the 9th anniversary celebration performance of their hit musical We Will Rock You on Tuesday, May 31 at the Dominion Theatre, with May performing with the cast.
