B.C. conservation officers solve the case of the severed bear paws

In May of 2021, a gruesome scene struck North Shuswap, B.C. Passersby stumbled upon dozens of skinned and severed bear paws scattered across Forest Road 695 in the Little Shuswap Lake Band territory, a local Indigenous Nation.

Initially, B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service suspected poaching, but after a year-long investigation, the service has finally uncovered who was responsible for the discarded animal parts: a taxidermist.

The bear paws fell out of the back of a taxidermist’s truck while driving along Forest Road 695 last spring. In a statement released at the time of the incident, the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) estimated that there were between 80 to 100 bear paws scattered along the road.

Conservation officers confirmed that the taxidermist was in legal possession of the bear paws and that the wildlife parts have no connection with poaching or any black market trafficking.

5 misconceptions about bears

The taxidermist is cooperating with authorities, the Conservation Officer Service said in a statement. Typically, the incorrect disposal of wildlife parts would land the taxidermist a $115 littering fine under the Environmental Management Act. But in lieu of the fine, the taxidermist has offered a substantial donation to the Little Shuswap Lake Band’s Watershed Stewardship Guardian Program. The program is designed to train community members in bear awareness, public safety, and attractant management.

“The [Conservation Officer Service] and the [Little Shuswap Lake Band] are pleased this donation will have a more meaningful impact to the community and wildlife,” the Conservation Officer Service said.

The service did not release the size of the donation, but did say that it far exceeded the amount of the littering fine.

Any wildlife carcasses or parts, regardless of whether they’re the result of hunting, taxidermy, or other activities, must be disposed of in a lawful and ethical manner, the service stressed. Kamloops, the closest major city to where the incident took place, states that small wildlife can be double bagged and placed in a garbage bin, while larger wildlife needs to be brought to landfill sites.

“This is to avoid alarming passersby, as well as attracting dangerous wildlife to an area frequented by people, which can create a public safety risk,” the service said.

Individuals who witness wildlife carcasses or parts being disposed of improperly in B.C. can report the violation to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277. If the incident occurs outside of B.C., look up the local Ministry of Natural Resources or conservation authority. Every province in Canada has a hotline for reporting poaching.

Liam Payne and Cheryl deal with ‘struggles’ as a family

Liam Payne has admitted he and Cheryl "have our struggles", but they work through them together and are committed to each other.

The former One Direction star and Girls Aloud singer have seen their relationship fall under scrutiny this year before making a rare public appearance together at the BRIT Awards.

Liam told ES magazine: "The funniest thing was a week before we were getting married. The next week we’re splitting up. And the thing for me is, I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle. You know, we have our struggles – like of course I’m not gonna sit here and say that everything’s absolutely fine and dandy, because of course you go through different things, and that’s what a relationship is. But we go through them together as a family and that’s the most important thing for me. This part of our relationship was never not going to happen, there was always going to be a little bit of tenseness in the way we sort ourselves out, but tell me a relationship in the world that doesn’t go through a spot like that? It’s about whether you make it through or not, together, is the main point there I guess."

The 24-year-old singer and Cheryl, 34, have been in a relationship for two years and have a 12-month-old son Bear together and Liam believes their relationship works because they both have similar careers and understand what it is like to live life in the spotlight.

He said: "[I’m] very fortunate that I partnered up with someone who is … very understanding with what I do. Because I don’t think anybody else could take it. It’s difficult, obviously: having someone else who’s so high-profile in the media pushes everything that I do to another level, and I think it’s weird. I feel like the press are more obsessed with it than the nation are, which is quite funny."

Liam added: "It is about making it work for us, not making it work how people think it should work."

But the ‘Strip That Down’ singer insisted he and Cheryl are in "full agreement" that they must protect their son Bear from the glare of the public eye.

Liam said: "Rather than being pictured and being put in places, I wanna give him the chance [of a life outside of the public eye].

"If I take it away from him now, he never has the chance to go back."

Cheryl Tweedy and Liam Payne’s TV trouble

Liam Payne says Cheryl Tweedy won’t let him watch ‘The Walking Dead’ at home.

The One Direction star recently said he was missing his girlfriend and baby son Bear while he is out on the road, but at least he can watch his favorite TV series away from Cheryl’s censorship.

Liam, 24, admits Cheryl, 34, doesn’t like him having the gory show on at home in case their eight-month-old son sees it.

The pop star revealed at a gig in Tampa, Florida: "’Walking Dead’ is so good but my girlfriend won’t watch it with me. She’s like, ‘I’m not doing the zombie thing.’ She doesn’t want our son to be going round like a zombie."

Liam has been busy promoting his solo music in the run-up to Christmas, leaving the former Girls Aloud star and Bear at home.

He said: "The house has just been done up all Christmassy so there’s a lovely feeling around at the minute. I’ve been away for a little while so I’ve only seen pictures, that’s been the hardest thing about touring."

While the ‘Strip That Down’ singer is excited about his first Christmas as a parent, he and Cheryl aren’t planning to buy Bear any gifts.

He added: "First Christmas as a dad, best advice I’ve been given is just buy wrapping paper and make it really, really shiny because they’ll only be interested in that!"

Liam recently admitted he can’t wait to spend time with Cheryl and Bear over the festive period – and is equally excited about overindulging in "lovely Christmas food".

He said: "My holiday plans are to spend some beautiful time with my son and to eat my own weight in lovely Christmas food. You might see a different Liam after Christmas, and then you’ll see post-Christmas Liam with a new year’s resolution, hopefully!"

Russell Brand serenades dog before operation

Russell Brand’s dog was treated to a song before undergoing an operation.

The 41-year-old comedian published a video on his Instagram account of him singing to his German Shepherd dog Bear before the canine went under the knife for an unspecified procedure.

In the clip shared on the photo-sharing app, Russell sings the theme tune to the 1979 TV show ‘The Littlest Hobo’ before having his phone knocked out of his hands by the excitable pooch.

The dark-haired hunk chants: "There’s a voice that keeps on calling me.

"Down the road that’s where I’ll always be. Every stop I make, I make a new friend. Can’t stay for long, just turn around and I’m gone again."

In the 40-second video Russell is heard calling his dog’s name who then runs up to him and causes the camera to fall over.

Russell is then heard saying: "Who’s a good boy? Give me that stick. You ridiculous boy."

‘The Littlest Hobo’ was a programme about a German Shepherd who wanders only to stop and do a good deed or help a person in need.

This is not the first time the ‘Arthur’ actor has posted a video of him serenading his dog, in December last year he sang love songs to his pet on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’.

Russell gave his partner Laura Gallacher – with whom he has two-month-old daughter Mabel – Bear as a gift as he thought it would be good practice looking after the puppy before becoming a father for the first time.

At the time, a source said: "Ever since Russell moved to the countryside he has been desperate to get a dog – and saw this as the right time.

"He reckons looking after Bear will be good practice for him and Laura before baby arrives this summer.

"If he is as hands-on as he with Bear, he is going to be all right."

Kate Winslet names her son Bear

Kate Winslet has named her son Bear.

The ‘Labor Day’ actress and her husband Ned Rocknroll have decided to give their first child together the unusual animal-inspired moniker, a spokesperson has confirmed.

A source told The Sun newspaper: ”They are all doing so well, they both absolutely adore him – and the name Bear.”

Kate – who also has a 10-year-old son, Joe, with her ex-husband, Sam Mendes, and a daughter Mia, 13, with her ex-husband Jim Threapleton – is currently taking a break from the limelight to look after the two-week old tot at home in West Sussex, England.

It comes as no surprise that the couple, who tied the knot in a secret New York City ceremony in December 2012, have chosen an original name like Bear, since businessman Ned famously changed his own from Abel Smith in 2008.

They aren’t the first to name their child after the large furry mammal, however, since celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s son was christened Buddy Bear three years ago.

Kate recently admitted she had enjoyed her third pregnancy far more than her previous ones.

The 38-year-old star explained: ”I’ve been more active and healthier. I know more about how to take care of myself now. I think that between 27 and 37 was a big learning decade. I’ve been lucky – a bit tired and a bit sick at the beginning, but nothing major.”
