MobileSyrup Touque Test 2022: Which earbuds work best with winter hats?

Welcome back to MobileSyrup’s annual Touque Test. If you haven’t seen it before, the Touque Test is all about finding out which earbuds are the most “touque-able” on the market, an important factor for any Canadian.

Every year, companies pump out a ton of fancy new wireless earbuds boasting all kinds of features. However, those fancy features don’t mean much if you can’t comfortably wear the earbuds with a touque during a cold, Canadian winter.

Below, you’ll find a list of earbuds reviewed by members of the MobileSyrup team throughout 2022 along with a brief description of how “touque-able” the earbuds are. We also score each earbud out of five points on the touque scale, with five being the most comfortable and one being the most uncomfortable.

And if you’re curious, in the 2021 Touque Test, the AirPods (3rd Gen), Galaxy Buds 2, and OnePlus Buds Pro tied for first place. In 2020, the Galaxy Buds+, OnePlus Buds, and AirPods Pro tied for first place.

Read on the find out which earbuds released in 2022 are the best to use with a touque.

AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen)

If you’ve used Apple’s AirPods with a touque, you’ll know what to expect with the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen). Thanks to their in-ear design, they fit snuggly under any winter hat and rarely fall out of your ears, while still offering great sound, active noise cancellation and one of the best mics around.

That said, if your touque is a little too tight, the earbuds can quickly get uncomfortable as they push into your ears. Still, as far as wireless earbuds go, Apple’s AirPods Pro are some of the best buds out there when it comes to staying firmly planted in your ears while still offering excellent sound quality.

Score: 4/5

OnePlus Nord Buds

The OnePlus Nord Buds are some of the most subtle OnePlus earbuds, but since they retain the patented earbud stick design, they can rub up against a winter hat as you take it off/on.

However, the good sizing and light weight makes them feel fairly secure when you’re actually wearing a touque.

Score: 3/5

Beats Fit Pro

You would think the small size and wing-tip design of the Beats Fit Pros would lend itself to being secure under a hat, but it’s actually the opposite. Since the buds have angular edges pointing out from your head, they easily catch on a hat and get pulled loose.

We didn’t have them push out of our ears, but rather as we moved our head, the earbuds would shift and pull loose, allowing us to hear the outside world and making them sit a little more precariously.

Score: 2/5

Learn More | Buy: $249.95 at Beats, $199.99 at Amazon (regular $249.95)

LG Tone Free FP9

The small size of the LG Tone Free FP9s makes them surprisingly versatile for wearing under a touque. The subtle curve of the stick aspect of the earbuds helps them pull in close to your face as well and seems to reduce the chances that they’ll catch on a hat.

Score: 5/5

Learn More | Buy: $220.99 on Amazon (regular $259.99)

OnePlus Buds Z2

The OnePlus Buds Z2 feel surprisingly good in the ear and under a touque as well. Once again, the light design works well. The Buds Z2 do have a stick, but it’s long enough that it clears most touques and instead, you may be more worried about a tall scarf brushing up against them.

However, the flat end of the earpiece keeps them reasonably secure under a regular touque.

Score: 4/5

Learn More | Buy: $79.99 at OnePlus (regular $119.99), $92.91 at Amazon (regular $111.96)

Black Shark Lucifer T1 and T2

Lucifer T1 earbuds (left) and T2 earbuds (right)

Given the similarity between these two earbuds, we combined them into one for this section. Both the Lucifer T1 and T2 earbuds don’t work great when wearing a touque, with the T1s being slightly worse off. Wearing a touque tends to knock these earbuds loose, causing them to fall out of the ear. Most of the time, it’s a choice between wearing these earbuds or wearing a touque.

Score: 1/5

Learn More: T2, T1 | Buy T2: $39.99 at Amazon (regular $42.99) | Buy T1: $34.99 at Amazon

Beats reveals new neutral-coloured Fit Pro designed in collaboration with Kim Kardashian

Beats, in collaboration with “multi-hyphenated” entrepreneur and reality star Kim Kardashian, has announced that the Beats Fit Pro are available in three neutral colours: ‘Moon,’ ‘Dune’ and ‘Earth.’

A press release from Beats describes the new wireless earbud colours as ‘light,’ ‘medium’ and ‘deep.’ The concept behind the new colour line is wireless earbuds that better blend in with the wearer by creating a “monochromatic or contrasted look.”

As someone who generally isn’t fond of bright-coloured wearable tech (especially earbuds/headphones), this line definitely appeals to me, especially given most wireless earbuds and headphones are available in either white or some sort of a stark colour.

“I wanted to break away from the idea that headphones have to be colourful to make a statement,” said Kim Kardashian. “This collaboration is special because it allows you to blend in or stand out, and Beats is known for creating products that showcase individuality.”

Beats Fit Pro features active noise cancellation, transparent, adaptive EQ modes, spatial audio, dynamic head tracking and most importantly, Apple’s proprietary H1 chip. They also feature a wing tip to help secure them in your ears, unlike Apple’s AirPods.

All three Beats Fit Pro colours release on August 16th at 10/am ET/7am PT for $249. For more on Beats’ Fit Pro, check out Brad Bennett’s wireless earbuds review.

Apple’s Beats Fit Pro earbuds available to pre-order in Canada for $249

The Beats Fit Pro, Apple’s latest wireless earbuds under the Beats brand, are set to make their way to Canada on January 28th.

The fitness-focused Fit Pro feature a unique fin design that aims to keep the buds securely in your ears while exercising. The wireless earbuds also offer IPX4 water and dust resistance, allowing them to survive a sweaty workout and light rain easily.

Other features include the H1 chip from Apple’s AirPods line, allowing the Fit Pro to seamlessly connect to other Apple products and use Apple Music’s Spatial Audio head-tracking features. This is a feature the mid-level Beats Studio Buds don’t offer, though the Fit Pro still sit below the Power Beats Pro in Apple’s lineup.

Next week, I’ll have a more in-depth review of the Beats Fit Pro on MobileSyrup, but based on my initial impressions, they seem like a decent pair of wireless earbuds that do everything reasonably well.

You can pre-order the Beats Fit Pro from Apple now $249. The wireless earbuds will be available in ‘Beats Black,’ ‘Beats White,’ ‘Stone Purple’ and ‘Sage Grey on January 28th.

Apple’s Beats Fit Pro release in Canada on January 24 for $249

After releasing in the U.S. back in November, Apple-owned Beats will bring its Fit Pro wireless earbuds to Canada on January 24th for $249.

The wireless earbuds feature 27-hours of charging with their case, active noise cancellation, a transparency mode, adaptive EQ, Apple’s H1 chip and Spatial Audio with head-tracking support. The Fit Pro seem designed to fall above the Studio Buds and possibly replace Beat’s more expensive Powerbeats Pro in the headphone/earbud company’s lineup of products.

Along with the above features, the Beats Fit Pro feature a built-in flexible wingtip designed to keep the wireless earbuds secure when they’re in your ears.

The sporty wireless earbuds have generally received positive coverage from most U.S. tech publications, with reviewers stating that the Fit Pros are comfortable and offer excellent noise cancellation. On the other hand, they lack wireless charging and don’t work as well with Android devices as Beats’ Studio Buds.

The Beats Fit Pro are available in ‘Black,’ ‘White,’ ‘Gray’ and ‘Purple/Pink.’ The Beats Fit Pro release in Canada on January 24th for $249.

Beats reveals new Fit Pro wireless earbuds with flexible wing tip design

In a surprise move, Apple-owned Beats has announced a new pair of wireless earbuds, the $199 USD (about $245 CAD) Beats Fit Pro.

The Fit Pro seems designed to fall between the Studio Buds and the headphone company’s more expensive Powerbeats Pro and Powerbeats. As it stands right now, it’s unclear if the Beats Fit Pro will release in Canada.

The wireless earbuds aren’t currently listed on Apple’s or Beats’ Canadian website, and a U.S.-focused press release only states that they’re coming to the U.S. on November 5th. MobileSyrup has reached out to Apple for more information.

That said, like most Beats products, the Beats Fit Pro will likely make their way north of the U.S. border in a few weeks. The wireless earbuds feature built-in flexible wingtips designed to keep them securely planted in your ears while exercising.

It’s worth noting that the Fit Pro also include Apple’s H1 chip, allowing them to offer one-step pairing and switching between Apple devices. Other features include Spatial Audio, the same skin sensor included in Apple’s 3rd-gen AirPods and noise-cancellation. Beats’ Studio Buds, on the other hand, don’t feature Apple’s H1 chip.

The Beats Fit Pro are available in ‘Black,’ ‘White,’ ‘Gray’ and ‘Purple/Pink’ with U.S. pre-orders being available now and shipping on November 5th.

New wireless Beats Fit Pro earbuds leak in iOS 15.1 update

The latest iOS 15.1 update includes product images of a new pair of unreleased Beats earbuds.

The new earbuds, reportedly called the Beats Fit Pro, look similar to the Beats Studio Buds, but with some sort of stabilizing hook piece. This suggests that these might be the successors to the PowerBeats Pro, Beats’ more workout-focused buds.

9to5Mac report also mentions that the new buds feature Apple’s H1 chip for fast pairing, an accelerometer and noise-cancellation. On top of that, the earbuds will reportedly offer seven hours of battery life and 30 in total with the charging case.

There’s no mention of how much the Beats Fit Pro will cost, but they’ll reportedly be revealed the week of November 1st and will come in four colours: Black, grey, a pinkish-lavender and white.

Between the Beats Fit Pro, the Beats Studio Buds and the 3rd-gen AirPods, it looks like Apple will likely be selling a lot of wireless earbuds this holiday season.
