Bell Media and Crave secure long-term streaming deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment

Bell Media and its Crave streaming service are set to become the exclusive streaming home for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s theatrical films. As part of a Pay-One window licensing agreement, the two companies have entered a long-term deal, kickstarting April 2023.

The agreement sees Crave becoming the exclusive Canadian service to receive all new Sony Pictures Entertainment films. Upcoming films will transition over to Crave following their “theatrical and home entertainment window.” Of the announced films, the deal will include upcoming Spider-Man spin-off films like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web.

Additionally, the deal will include the Canadian streaming rights to No Hard Feelings, Gran Turismo, the latter of which is based on PlayStation’s hit racing franchise. It’s also confirmed that new installments of Insidious and The Equalizer will also land on Crave following their theatrical releases.

“We are happy to extend our relationship with Bell Media and make Sony Pictures’ robust library of premium content available to more viewers across Canada,” said Stephanie Shinkoda, Vice President, Distribution and Co-Country Manager, Sony Pictures Television and Home Entertainment Canada, in a statement.

To satisfy Crave subscribers before April 2023, Sony Pictures Entertainment is bringing a ton of its backlog to the streaming service. Films like Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man: Homecoming are available for streaming now. Jumanji and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle are also primed to make their debut later this month.

Bell Media and Sony Pictures Entertainment confirm that additional films will be added at a later date.

Crave will be supporting Sony Picture Entertainment films in both English and French for subscribers. A Crave subscription is available starting at $9.99/month. For more on what’s coming to Crave this month, we’ve compiled a rundown.

TSN, CTV, other Bell Media channels to remain home of NFL in Canada

Bell Media channels will remain the home of football broadcasts in Canada, thanks to a fresh media rights agreement between Bell and the National Football League (NFL).

That means Canadian football fans can continue tuning into games on TSN, CTV, CTV2, RDS, live streaming through the networks’ official apps, and through TSN Direct and RDS Direct subscriptions. A Bell Media release says fans will be able to watch pre-season games through to the Super Bowl, with the extended, multi-year agreement including:

  • Thursday Night Football regular-season games
  • Sunday 1pm ET regular-season games
  • Sunday 4pm ET regular-season games
  • Sunday Night Football regular-season games
  • Monday Night Football regular-season games, including the new slate of games produced by ABC
  • NFL RedZone, available every Sunday starting at 1pm ET
  • All ‘International Series’ games, including the recently announced game live from Germany
  • All Playoff games
  • The Super Bowl

Bell Media is the exclusive television broadcast partner of the NFL in Canada. It’s worth noting that TSN has televised NFL games since 1987, and CTV’s NFL partnership began in 2007.

Of course, for fans of the Super Bowl’s big-budget advertisements, this will continue the Canadian tradition of missing out. As a refresher, Bell argued it would lose millions in ad revenue if U.S. Super Bowl ads were aired in Canada and a December 2019 ruling banned American ads from airing in Canada.

Bell Media directs fans to check out TSN’s NFL page for breaking NFL news, features, analysis, game previews, recaps and more.

Bell Media laid off CTV Vancouver anchors and radio hosts

Bell Media is once again gutting newsrooms with another round of layoffs, this time targetting Vancouver.

As reported by Daily Hive, several high-profile staffers at CTV Vancouver and Bell-owned radio stations were laid off. Moreover, Daily Hive shared tweets confirming the cuts from several of those who were laid off.

CTV Vancouver’s Scott Roberts, co-host of CTV News at Six, was among those laid off. Roberts, a Jack Webster Award-winning journalist, co-anchored the show since August 2018 alongside veteran journalist Mi-Jung Lee, and had been with the station for over a decade.

CTV Morning Live segment host and traffic reporter Luisa Alvarez was also laid off. Alvarez did traffic updates on TSN 1040 and BNN Bloomberg 1410 as well. She joined CTV Vancouver in 2019 before transitioning to CTV Morning Live the following year.

Outside of CTV Vancouver, Bell Media has let go of at least two employees at radio stations it owns in Vancouver. That includes Olivia Jones, the midday host of Move 103.5 FM. Reports indicate that Amy Beeman, the producer of 94.5 Virgin Radio’s Morning Show, was also laid off. That comes just weeks after longtime morning show host Jonny Staub left the show.

Bell Media came under fire for job cuts around the same time last year, when the company cut an estimated 250 positions in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. The move came on the heels of Bell’s successful ‘Let’s Talk Day’ in 2021.

Moreover, OpenMedia started a petition in 2021 to make Canadian telecom companies pay back wage subsidies received through the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program. OpenMedia accused companies of taking the wage relief and paying it out to investors — Bell took particular ire over the Bell Media layoffs since CEWS was intended to help keep people employed.
