Bell announces ‘5G+’ deployment starting in Toronto

Bell announced its new ‘5G+’ network will soon arrive for Bell 5G customers starting in Toronto.

The Montreal-based national telecom detailed the news in a press release, saying it would work towards covering roughly 40 percent of the Canadian population with 5G+ by the end of 2022.

Bell’s release indicates 5G+ will run on 3500MHz spectrum and the carrier said it would offer “peak theoretical download speeds of up to 3Gbps in select areas.” Moreover, Bell said customers with ‘Ultimate 45’ or ‘Ultimate 50’ plans, and compatible devices, would be the first to access 5G+. These plans cost $85/mo and $95/mo respectively.

“Today’s announcement reinforces Bell’s commitment to provide the best networks to Canadian consumers and businesses so they can do more of what they love,” said Stephen Howe, Bell’s chief technology and information officer, in the release.

“I’m thrilled that 5G+ is here and with this release, we’ll take the country’s top-ranked 5G service to new heights with faster mobile data speeds. It’s a significant milestone in the evolution of next generation communications in Canada, and we’re proud to lead the way.”

Bell’s announcement comes on the heels of Rogers deploying 5G using 3500MHz spectrum in Nanaimo, B.C.

The federal government auctioned off 3500MHz spectrum licences in the summer of 2021 — the auction results went live in July. That spectrum is considered crucial to delivering the promises of 5G.

Specifically, 3500MHz spectrum occupies part of ‘mid-band’ 5G, also called ‘Sub-6.’ Compared to the ‘low-band’ 5G available in Canada now, mid-band 5G like 3500MHz should offer substantial improvements to speed, latency, and network capacity.

There’s also ‘high-band’ 5G, called mmWave, that can offer even faster speeds than Sub-6 but has a significantly shorter range. In Canada, the focus is on mid-band 5G, which will have a broader impact in both urban and rural regions — mmWave’s range makes it better suited for urban areas.

With Canadian carriers starting to deploy 5G using 3500MHz spectrum, Canadians should start to feel more of the benefits of 5G.

CRTC fined Bell $7.5 million over Vidéotron telephone pole dispute

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) issued $7.5 million in penalties against Bell Canada for three violations of the Telecommunications Act.

In a CRTC release, the commission said it set penalties for three violations at $2.5 million each. The CRTC found that Bell denied permit applications for Vidéotron, the company’s main competitor in Quebec, to access its telephone poles. This delayed Vidéotron’s network deployment, creating a competitive advantage for Bell Canada.

“It is vitally important that the market for telecommunications services be fair and competitive so that Canadians can enjoy a range of services from different providers,” said CRTC chairperson Ian Scott in the release.

“Today’s decision underscores this point and demonstrates that we will not hesitate to use the tools at our disposal to take action to promote compliance when a company’s actions violate these principles.”

In 2020, Vidéotron filed an application to the CRTC requesting it issue orders related to Bell’s processing and granting of access permits to its support structures like telephone poles. Vidéotron also launched a lawsuit against Bell over the telephone poles issue.

In April 2021, the CRTC determined Bell violated section 24 and subsection 25(1) and 27(2) of the Telecommunications Act, as well as breached its National Services Tariff and the Support Structure Licence Agreement with Vidéotron. Additionally, the CRTC ordered Bell to complete the “make-ready work required” at its own cost within 30 days. The commission noted in the decision that it felt it should levy monetary penalties against Bell and that it would hold a follow-up proceeding to determine what penalty, if any, was necessary.

This latest decision is a result of that follow-up consultation. The CRTC believes the penalties should “promote compliance” with the Telecommunications Act.

TSN, CTV, other Bell Media channels to remain home of NFL in Canada

Bell Media channels will remain the home of football broadcasts in Canada, thanks to a fresh media rights agreement between Bell and the National Football League (NFL).

That means Canadian football fans can continue tuning into games on TSN, CTV, CTV2, RDS, live streaming through the networks’ official apps, and through TSN Direct and RDS Direct subscriptions. A Bell Media release says fans will be able to watch pre-season games through to the Super Bowl, with the extended, multi-year agreement including:

  • Thursday Night Football regular-season games
  • Sunday 1pm ET regular-season games
  • Sunday 4pm ET regular-season games
  • Sunday Night Football regular-season games
  • Monday Night Football regular-season games, including the new slate of games produced by ABC
  • NFL RedZone, available every Sunday starting at 1pm ET
  • All ‘International Series’ games, including the recently announced game live from Germany
  • All Playoff games
  • The Super Bowl

Bell Media is the exclusive television broadcast partner of the NFL in Canada. It’s worth noting that TSN has televised NFL games since 1987, and CTV’s NFL partnership began in 2007.

Of course, for fans of the Super Bowl’s big-budget advertisements, this will continue the Canadian tradition of missing out. As a refresher, Bell argued it would lose millions in ad revenue if U.S. Super Bowl ads were aired in Canada and a December 2019 ruling banned American ads from airing in Canada.

Bell expands pure fibre internet service to London, Ontario

Bell is expanding its pure fibre internet service to London, Ontario.

The move will bring all-fibre broadband access to roughly 160,000 locations by 2026.

Residents will be able to access download speeds of up to 1.5Gbps and Bell’s other services, including Fibe TV.

“Access to fast and reliable internet connections is as important as ever, and this expansion is part of our long-standing objective to connect Canadians in communities throughout Ontario and across our footprint,” Bruce Furlong, Bell’s senior vice-president of network, said.

The company has made similar announcements for the Ontario municipalities of Pickering and Amherstburg and several communities in New Brunswick.

The Government of Canada has a goal to connect 98 percent of the country’s residents with high-speed internet by 2026.

This has resulted in a barrage of funding announcements, often through partnerships with provincial governments, over the past month. Telecom companies have also been making similar announcements to advance their networks throughout the country.

Government

May 10: The Government of Quebec announced high-speed internet access for 10,000 homes in the province, courtesy of Starlink. The government-funded project is worth $50 million.

May 13: The Government of Canada paid Starlink $1.04 million to connect hundreds of rural Manitoba homes with high-speed internet.

May 20: The federal government and the Province of British Columbia invested $108 million to bring high-speed internet to 14,000 households. 

May 27: The Governments of Canada and Quebec invested nearly $400,000 to bring high-speed internet services to 55 rural households.

Telus

May 17: The Vancouver-based company announced $17 billion in investments for network infrastructure, operations, and spectrum in Alberta over the next four years.

May 24: Telus announced it will invest $11 billion towards network infrastructure, operations, and spectrum across Quebec over the next four years.

May 26: Telus announced it will bring its 5G and PureFibre networks to the Lower St. Lawrence region through a $20 million investment.

May 27: The company invested $8 million to bring its PureFibre and 5G networks to the Innu community of Ekuanitshit and the municipalities of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and Port-Menier.

Bell

May 31: Bell expanded its fibre internet services to 20,000 locations across 25 communities in New Brunswick.

Bell and OverActive Media extend partnership for three years

Communications giant, Bell, has renewed its partnership with OverActive Media, a global sports, media and entertainment company.

The partnership, which was first established in 2019, will see a multi-year extension of three years, according to a recent press release.

“Bell has been a believer in OverActive, our teams and our fans since day one. For the past three years, we’ve delivered a premium gaming experience for our Toronto-based teams through Bell’s fibre Internet technology, while building a wider fan base around professional esports in Canada,” said Tyler Keenan, senior vice president, partnerships and revenue, OverActive Media.

Bell will also level up its esports investment in the several ways listed below:

  • Bell will be a presenting partner of OverActive’s largescale esports events including Toronto Ultra Major III this month and the Toronto Defiant Summer Showdown in September.
  • The new Bell Fibe Zone, which is a top-tier professional esports practice facility within OverActive’s Toronto-based headquarters that’s fully powered by Bell pure fibre internet.
  • Producing branded content, including OverActive’s top-performing series “Bell presents The Blueprint,” which provides a behind-the-scenes look at Toronto Ultra as they experience the trials and tribulations of the Call of Duty League season.
  • Jersey and broadcast branding integration for both Toronto Ultra and Toronto Defiant.

With partnership underway, the pair will present the first-ever Call of Duty League tournament in Canada, Toronto Ultra Major III, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre from June 2nd-5th.

Most notably, OverActive Media will build an esports venue in Toronto, which is expected to be completed in 2025.

Bell expands fibre internet service across dozens of New Brunswick communities

Bell is expanding its pure fibre internet service across 25 communities in New Brunswick.

The expansion will impact 20,000 locations and provide download speeds of 1.5Gbps and access to Bell’s other services, including Fibe TV.

Bell will complete the expansion by the end of the year. The move is part of the company’s capital expenditure acceleration program, which has already made the service available to 7,200 locations in the communities of Hampton, Lamèque, Miscou, Memramcook, Saint-Louis-de-Kent and Scoudouc. Bell will make the service available “soon” to 1,600 locations in Kingston Peninsula and the remaining communities by year’s end.

Bell will notify residents when the service is available to them.

“Through our own fully-funded investments in world-class broadband networks, Bell is advancing our long-standing objective to connect Canadians in communities throughout New Brunswick and across our footprint,” Glen LeBlanc, Bell’s chief financial officer, said.

Bell has made similar expansion announcements for the Ontario municipalities of Guelph and Pickering.

Here’s how the Huawei ban will affect one of the carrier’s that uses its equipment

Canada’s leading telecom companies have said the government’s order to remove Huawei equipment from their 5G networks wouldn’t be a problem, as neither Rogers, Bell, or Telus have deployed the equipment.

But the same can’t be said for smaller organizations, including Iristel. The Markham-based telecommunications company owns Sugar Mobile, Télécommunications de l’Est, and Ice Wireless, serving the northern territories and Quebec.

President Samer Bishay told MobileSyrup that the company uses Huawei equipment “coast to coast.”

The government banned the Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE from Canada’s wireless spectrum earlier this month, citing concerns China’s government could compel the companies to take part in actions detrimental to Canada and its residents.

Bishay admits there’s a positive to the situation: the government has finally decided on the matter, which they’ve been discussing for years. But it’s short-lived, as the negative aspects hold their weight. Bishay said the ruling hurts organizations that invested millions in equipment that essentially has to be thrown out. Sanctioning the same rules across the board also doesn’t help.

“Applying the same rules to all operators, big or small, will further unlevel the playing field and Canadians will continue to pay some of the highest prices in the world.”

Bishay said degraded services would potentially impact Iristel customers if their systems start failing, as they won’t have the legal ability to replace them. This is a dooming reality, as they serve the northern territories that experience harsh weather conditions.

“We need to overhaul our entire mobile network over the next few years, and with supply chain issues already looming, the immediate concern is potential service disruption for Canadians in rural and arctic communities if we can’t get replacement parts in time.”

Bishay explains the company deployed Huawei equipment in the first place as it offered the best technology and price point at the time of purchase. The equipment was also temperature tested, which appealed to the company.

The government said it wouldn’t financially assist companies in removing the equipment, something Bishay hopes will change. “I hope the government auto qualifies rural operators for some broadband mobility funding to help offset this damage.”

Companies have until June 28th, 2024 to remove 5G equipment and December 31st, 2027 for 4G equipment. Bishay said this timeline isn’t fair for smaller providers. The “government needs to own up to this and figure out a path for smaller operators that will be impacted.”

Leading operators Bell and Telus had also asked the federal government for financial assistance in removing the equipment long before the government made the announcement. The two companies use Huawei equipment in their 4G networks but deployed Ericsson and Nokia in their 5G networks.

MobileSyrup asked Bell and Telus if they’ll approach the government again for financial support but didn’t receive a response.
