Virgin Plus removes several limited-time offers, hikes its $30 plan by $1 a month

Virgin Plus has removed several limited-time options from its website.

Bell’s flanker brand allows customers to get plans in two categories: new phone purchases or bring your own phone.

Under the ‘bringing your own phone’ option, there’s a value plan and a starter plan.

The cheapest value plan used to start at $26 a month and offered pay-per-use data. Virgin Plus listed the offer as limited-time but has now removed it from its website.

Virgin has also removed various other limited-time options:

  • 6GB data for $39/month
  • 10GB data for $44/month
  • 12GB data for $48/month

The company has also increased its regular pay-per-use data offering from $30 a month to $31.

The only limited-time option active under this section is the $55 10GB data plan. Also listed as a limited-time option, the plan offers 8GB of data, plus a 2GB bonus.

The ‘getting a new phone’ side also offered a $26 a month plan, but that also appears to have been removed.

Crave to become the exclusive Canadian streaming home of Sesame Street

Bell has signed a deal with Sesame Workshop to make Crave the exclusive Canadian streaming home of the iconic children’s series.

This will come into effect starting April 15th with the premiere of the show’s 51st season, which will run for 35 episodes. On this date, the ‘Sesame Street: Classic Episodes Collection’ will also hit Crave to highlight “20 timeless episodes of the series.” These episodes will feature the likes of Mr. Rogers, Robin Williams, James Earl Jones and Canada’s own Ryan Reynolds.

Later in 2022, Crave will also get Sesame Street programming like Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck and Elmo’s World (May), the upcoming new CGI-animated Sesame Street spin-off series and Sesame Street Season 52 (September); Sesame Street Mecha Builders (fall) and Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas (fall/winter).

Crave costs $9.99/month for a mobile-only plan and $19.99/month for a ‘Total’ subscription that supports a variety of devices. a $5.99/month Starz add-on is also available.

Bell’s pure fibre internet is now three times faster than cable

Bell’s pure fibre internet service now has download and upload speeds of 3Gbps, providing the fastest internet speeds among major providers in Canada, the company claims.

Bell says the new speeds are three times faster than cable in a press release detailing the announcement. But the service is only available in “most areas of Toronto.” Bell says it will make the services available to other regions “soon.”

The pure fibre package comes with Home Hub 4000 with Wi-Fi 6. As the newest Wi-Fi technology available, it allows six people to simultaneously use their devices with no impact on speed or performance.

The move comes as Bell increased costs for mobile customers.

Last month the company increased mobile customers’ bills by $3/month. It also recently increased its $90/ month 45GB mobile plan by $5.

Bell increases its $90/mo 45GB plan to $95

Hot on the heels of increasing some existing customers’ bills by $3/mo, Bell has upped one of its in-market plans by $5/mo.

Bell’s ‘Unlimited 45’ plan with 45GB of data now costs $95/mo instead of $90. However, it’s worth noting that Bell previously changed the plan from $95 to $90 at the beginning of March, and before that, it cost $90/mo for 40GB in February.

Beyond the return to $95/mo, it appears nothing else has changed with Bell’s Unlimited 45 plan. It still offers 45GB of data at typical network speed followed by unlimited use at throttled speeds of up to 512Kbps once customers surpass the cap.

Along with that, the plan includes 5G access, support for up to “HD Video streaming” (1080p), hotspot capabilities, and unlimited international texting. There’s also unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, but that’s included in all of Bell’s plans.

Bell added the HD and SD video quality limits to its plans at the beginning of February.

The carrier’s other plans remain unchanged as well:

Telecom complaints are down 26 percent, according to a recent report from the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS).

The report examines complaints received between August 1st, 2021 and January 31st, 2022, and compares them to the last mid-year report.

The CCTS accepted 6,682 complaints on 14 providers, with a 88 percent resolve rate.

The recent report shows complaints decreased by 26 percent, a change from the last report, which reported an increase.

Bell accounts for 17.7 percent of all complaints, Rogers 15 percent, Fido 11.3 percent, Telus 8 percent and Virgin Plus 7.6 percent.

Bell has the largest decrease, with 36 percent fewer complaints than the year prior. Fido follows with 20 percent. Rogers and Telus reported close declines, with 16.5 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively. Virgin Plus saw nearly 10 percent fewer complaints.

The Wireless Code

Wireless complaints represented almost half of all complaints the CCTS accepted, with ‘disclosure issues’ in the lead. Conflicts with contracts and agreements were the most complained about aspects.

The CCTS found 24 breaches of the wireless code, down from the 28 reported last year.

9 of these breaches stem from providers failing to give customers reasonable notification and relevant information before disconnecting services.

4 of the breaches were because the service provider didn’t supply the customer with a paper or electronic copy of the contract listing all relevant information to the wireless code.

3 of the breaches are related to ‘critical information summary’ where providers must give customers a document containing the most essential parts of the contract.

“We continue to observe problems with service providers failing to disclose important information to their customers when signing up for a new phone, internet or TV service,” CCTS Commissioner and CEO Howard Maker said. “This can lead to complaints if bills or services don’t meet the customer’s expectation.”

Eligible low-income families and seniors can soon access internet for $20/month

The Government of Canada is partnering with 14 internet service providers (ISPs) to bring $20 a month internet to low-income families and seniors.

The partnership is through the government’s Connecting Families initiative. According to the government’s website, ISPs participate in the program “voluntarily and without and without government subsidy.”

Access Communications, Bell, CCAP, Cogeco, Hay Communications, Mornington, Novus, Rogers, SaskTel, Shaw, Tbaytel, Telus, Vidéotron, and Westman Communications are participating in the program.

“Many low-income Canadians are still facing barriers that prevent their full participation in the economy,” François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said.

“By working closely with internet service providers across the country, we are increasing accessibility and providing all Canadians with affordable and reliable internet.”

This announcement is the second phase of the Connecting Families initiative.

Families receiving the Canada Child Benefit and Guaranteed Income Supplement are eligible for the program. The program includes 50Mbps download speeds and 200GB of data usage each month. If 50Mbps is not available, it will consist of the fastest download speed in the region.

The first version of the plan, Connecting Families 1.0, which offered a $10 internet plan, is still available.

Eligible families should keep an eye on their mailboxes. They’ll receive a letter from the government with an access code needed to sign up for the program.

The offering is part of the government’s plan to ensure 98 percent of Canadians have high-speed internet access by 2026. The government has also made significant investments in the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF) to achieve this goal. A map of all UBF funded projects can be viewed here.

Bell brings fibre internet to Amherstburg, Ontario

Bell is expanding its pure fibre internet access to the town of Amherstburg, Ontario.

The expansion will bring access to roughly 8,000 locations.

The move is part of the company’s capital expenditure acceleration program to invest in next-generation infrastructure across the country. The goal is to provide fast fibre connections with download speeds up to 1.5Gbps and access to Bell services, including Fibe TV.

“Canadians want fast and reliable internet connections so that they can stay connected, work or learn from home, and be entertained,” Bruce Furlong, senior vice president of network, said.

“We’re proud to bring our pure fibre connections and world-leading internet and TV services to more households and businesses in Amherstburg as part of our long-standing objective to connect Canadians in communities throughout Ontario and across our footprint.”

The company made similar expansion announcements in two other Ontario municipalities, Pickering and Georgina.
