iPhones on Rogers or Bell get 5G+ icon with iOS 16.4

Apple dropped iOS 16.4 on March 27th, and among other things, the update brought a new 5G+ icon to iPhones on the Rogers and Bell networks.

As highlighted on Reddit, iPhones on iOS 16.4 will show a 5G+ icon next to the cell signal indicator in the status bar. In the Control Center, it also lists the carrier name (though this isn’t new behaviour).

The new icon is in line with branding introduced by Bell and Rogers last year when the carriers started rolling out 5G networks based on 3500MHz spectrum.

Bell started rolling out 3500MHz spectrum under 5G+ branding in Ontario in June 2022 and later expanded it into Atlantic Canada. Similarly, Rogers launched 3500MHz 5G in several cities in June but didn’t add 5G+ branding until October.

It’s worth noting that Telus also offers 5G running on the 3500MHz spectrum, but comments on Reddit indicate a 5G+ icon isn’t showing up on iPhones just yet.

Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that the symbol on your phone doesn’t always match up with the network you’re connected to. For example, in 2021, I tested an app from Opensignal that lets users view carriers’ 5G coverage, and according to the app, my phone was connected to Bell’s 4G network at the time, despite claiming it was on 5G.

Here’s how to watch Succession season 4 in Canada

If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the finale of the Waystar RoyCo saga, the moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived.

Succession Season 5 kicks off Sunday, March 27th at 9pm ET/6am PT on Bell’s Crave and will stream in the same time slot each subsequent week.

This season, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) will find new allies against their father Logan (Brian Cox), including Sandi Furness (Hope Davis), Stewy Hosseini (Arian Moayed) and Nan Pierce (Cherry Jones).

Personally, I’m most interested in how Cousin Greg (Gregory Hirsch) fares when the dust settles. HBO has confirmed season 4 will be the critically-acclaimed TV show’s last.

CRTC orders Rogers, Bell, to share details on network-sharing agreements

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has directed Rogers and Bell to share details on agreements with Vidéotron and EBOX.

Rogers’ agreement with Québecor subsidiary Vidéotron is part of the company’s $26-billion merger with Shaw. Vidéotron is seeking approval to acquire Freedom Mobile for $2.85 billion from Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Rogers has said it will lease its broadband network to the company at a lower rate than wholesale. However, TekSavvy has argued the deal violates the Telecommunications Act.

The Commission wants Rogers to share specifics on the wholesale service or agreement it will provide to Vidéotron. Almost nothing is known about the selection process that led Rogers and Shaw to pick Vidéotron as the company it would sell Freedom to.

TekSavvy’s application also points to preferential treatment with Bell and its recently acquired company EBOX. The CRTC has also directed Bell to share details of any agreements between the two brands.

Both Rogers and Bell have previously stated the agreements aren’t preferential.

The CRTC says it must receive the responses by April 11th.

Bell launched a new promo plan to match an offer Rogers has had since late last year: $60 per month for 15GB of 4G data.

The plan recently emerged on Bell’s website. Dubbed the ‘Promo 15’ plan, it includes unlimited calling and texting in Canada. The 15GB of 4G data is, unfortunately, not unlimited, and overage rates are absurd at $20 per gigabyte up to a maximum of 8GB, followed by $0.02 per megabyte after that (though that still works out to about $20 per gig).

Though Bell advertises 4G data, it’s worth noting that the data speed is capped at 150Mbps. However, speed isn’t the only restriction on the plan. The Promo 15 deal also limits video streaming to ‘standard definition,’ or 480p. Plus, the plan isn’t shareable.

As mentioned above, the plan is very similar to a $60/mo 15GB plan offered by Rogers. That plan has been around since at least December, and likely before then too. Rogers’ plan is technically $65/mo but currently is discounted to $60. It also includes 4G LTE data capped at 150Mbps with $20/GB overage rates, unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, and isn’t shareable.

While it’s good to see the Big Three offering plans that are more affordable than the $85/mo base they’ve had for months, these plans aren’t exactly good deals. Bell’s flanker brand Virgin Plus and Rogers’ flanker Fido have both offered plans with double data and discounts for weeks that beat out the $60/15GB plans.

Virgin and Fido both offer $60/mo 20GB and $65/mo 30GB plans, and if you bring your own phone (BYOP), you can save $10/mo for 24 months on those plans, bringing them down to $50 and $55, respectively. The data is capped at 150Mbps speeds, but that’s the same as Bell and Rogers, so why not save some money and get more data?

Innovation Minister wants CRTC to investigate rising roaming rates

Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne has asked the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to examine recent price hikes on roaming plans.

“This is part of a concerning trend to charge more for existing services broadly at a time when inflationary pressures are making it difficult for Canadians to pay their bills,” Champagne wrote in a letter to CRTC Chair Vicky Eatrides.

Several carriers have recently implemented price hikes. Telus and its flanker brand Koodo increased the cost for U.S. roaming from $12/day to $14/day and international roaming from $15 to $16/day.

Bell and its flanker Virgin Plus also increased its price tag. The costs for U.S. roaming went from $12/day to $13/day and international roaming from $15/day to $16/day.

Eastlink also has plans to increase its costs by $1 on April 20th. The company will charge $13/day for U.S. roaming and $16/day for international roaming.

“Increases to these types of ancillary fees add to the cost of a consumer’s bill beyond the main sticker price,” Champagne wrote. “In many cases, these fees are much less visible and are unpredictable or challenging for consumers to understand.”

Champagne acknowledges the Wireless Code addresses some aspects of roaming fees but doesn’t stop providers from increasing costs involved with international roaming.

“Increases to ancillary fees like international roaming fees can be a mechanism where a service provider seeks to raise the consumer price without affecting the main sticker price that is most visible to consumers in making their purchasing decision.”

Bell warns of outage impacting Fibe TV customers

Bell warned via its support account on Twitter that Fibe TV customers “may be experiencing a service outage.”

The company says it’s working to restore services as quickly as possible.

While Bell didn’t specify where the service outage was impacting people, but the website Downdetector indicates the issue is primarily impacting customers in southern Ontario and Quebec, as well as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Bell, Virgin Plus offering free Galaxy Buds 2 with select Samsung phones

In the market for a new Samsung smartphone? You might want to get one from Bell or its flanker brand Virgin Plus since right now, the providers will give you a free pair of Galaxy Buds 2 with the purchase of select Samsung devices.

If you’d rather not go with Bell or Virgin, it’s worth noting that Telus and Koodo have a similar offer but only on the Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra.

Currently, Bell is offering free Galaxy Buds 2 with the purchase and activation of the:

Bell notes that customers need to activate the phones with Bell SmartPay (the name Bell uses for financing) on a two-year plan and that the Buds 2 will ship separately from the device itself. The offer is only available online.

Oddly, Bell’s website includes two sets of fine print (above) for the deal that list availability with alternate Samsung phones, like the Z Flip/Fold or the S22 series. However, when viewing those devices on Bell’s website, the free Buds 2 offer isn’t shown. One of the two sets of fine print also notes the offer is valid from December 6th, 2022, which seems extra odd.

As for Virgin Plus, it’s a little more straightforward. You can head to the provider’s devices page, filter by Samsung, and see which devices include the Buds 2 at a glance because Virgin actually put a label on each eligible device. Considering Virgin Plus currently offers double the data on its $60/10GB and $65/15GB plans, bringing them up to 20GB and 30GB, respectively, I’d argue Virgin is the way to go unless you desperately want 5G and to overpay for it. Unfortunately, if you’re getting a phone, you can’t get the $10/mo bill credit for 24 months.

Virgin’s offer also appears to be online only.

Telus and Koodo

Finally, as mentioned up top, Telus and Koodo have free Buds 2 available with the Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra. As with Bell and Virgin, my recommendation would be to get the deal with Koodo and take advantage of the promotional $60/20GB or $65/30GB plans. You’ll save a bit of money compared to Telus and get more data.
