Bell, Virgin Plus will increase roaming rate by $1/day on March 9

Montreal-based carrier Bell will increase the cost of its Roam Better add-on starting March 9th, 2023.

Bell’s Roam Better offers two prices, one for U.S. travel and one for international travel. The U.S. Roam Better package will increase from $12/day to $13/day, while the international version will go from $15/day to $16/day.

Bell also still offers two variants of Roam Better for U.S. and international travel. The first and, arguably, better option is Roam Better with home data, which gives users access to unlimited talk, text, and the data on their account (with a speed cap after 1GB of usage). The other option is identical, save that it gives users 500MB of data for the day instead of access to their account data. Both Roam Better plans have the same price, and both will increase in March.

Bell flanker brand Virgin Mobile will also increase the costs of its Roam Sweet Roam add-on starting March 9th, 2023.

Roam Better, for those unfamiliar with the add-on, gives customers access to roaming at a daily rate, up to a maximum of 20 days per line per billing period. You can learn more about it on Bell’s FAQ page.

It’s also worth noting that Bell offers Canada-U.S. plans, which could be a good way for frequent travellers to save on roaming costs. Bell’s Canada-U.S. plans start at $95/mo for 60GB of data.

At the time of writing, neither Rogers nor Telus had similar price increases listed on their websites. However, when one of the Big Three increases a price, the others tend to follow, so keep your eyes out.

Bell wins big at residual spectrum auction, secures eight licenses

Telecom giant Bell was a big winner in a recent auction for 600 MHz, 2500 MHz, and 3500 MHz residual spectrum licenses.

The company won eight licenses priced at $10.6 million, covering a population of nearly 1.6 million in Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec.

Vidéotron acquired seven licences for $9.9 million, covering a population of 1.3 million in Manitoba and Quebec. Rogers won six licenses for $2.6 million to cover a population of 487,000 in Manitoba and B.C.

Ecotel inc., Sogetel Inc., and TBayTel each won two licenses.

Innovation Canada made nearly $30 million in sales. In total, 42 licenses were available for 600 MHz, 2500 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. The auction summary shows there were nine applicants in total. Bragg Communications, Cogeco Connexion and Telus also applied, according to the applicant summary, but did not secure any licenses.

This is the first residual spectrum license auction since 2018.

Telecom news roundup: Telus employees prepare to strike [Jan 14-20]

An outage, potential strike action and more developments on Rogers’ merger with Shaw dominated telecom headlines this week.

As a recap, here’s almost everything that happened in Canada’s telecom sector.

Business

Some Bell customers in Ontario experienced a voice service outage earlier this week. The issue has since been resolved, and some customers had to toggle airplane mode to restore service.

A CBC Marketplace investigation found Canada’s telecom monopoly is causing Canadians to pay higher cellphone bills.

The House of Commons committee on industry and technology will examine the Rogers-Shaw merger for the second time on January 25th. The committee previously examined the merger in March 2022, recommending against it. The first session was before Rogers and Shaw said they would sell Freedom Mobile to Vidéotron, and the matter is expected to play a role in the second hearing.

Rogers, Shaw and Vidéotron filed their response to the Competition Bureau’s Appeal, calling it “collateral attacks.” The bureau is opposing the Competition Tribunal’s decision to support Rogers’ merger with Shaw and Vidéotron’s acquisition of Freedom Mobile. The parties will face the Federal Court of Appeal on January 24th.

Telus employees are getting ready for a potential strike. According to the United Steelworkers union, employees have been in the bargaining process for 14 months without any resolution. The union seeks job protection, local job creation, and higher wages.

TekSavvy is asking the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Committee (CRTC) to investigate Rogers’ deal to lease its broadband network to Vidéotron at a lower rate than wholesale. TekSavvy says the move violates the Telecommunications Act.

A group of Canadian startups have completed work at Verizon and Centech’s 5G Development Hub. The program provides tools for 5G and Mobile Edge Compute. The projects focus on manufacturing, transportation and energy industries.

Globalive has launched a new public appeal against Rogers’ merger with Shaw. NoMerger.ca allows Canadians to send messages to MPs asking them to tell Minister Champagne to oppose the merger. Globalive previously offered to buy Freedom Mobile for $3.75 billion.

Verizon works with Centech, Bell, to foster 5G technology development

Verizon and Centech have selected their first cohort of companies for the 5G Development Hub.

Launched in May 2022, the hub provides startups with tools to realize 5G and Mobile Edge Compute (MEC).

Seven Canadian startups are part of the first cohort, and some of these companies were able to test their solutions on Bell’s 5G network. The startups specialize in applying 5G to manufacturing, transportation and energy.

“The 5G DevelopmentHub brings together Canada’s booming startup ecosystem and the expertise of leading 5G and MEC providers,” Richard Chénier, Centech’s general director, said.“5G is important for the future of innovation and this first cohort has proven to be successful.

Bell once again offering $55/20GB plan in email to former customers

Bell is once again offering some former customers a $55/mo 20GB plan.

In an email sent out to former customers (including myself), Bell offered the “exclusive rate plan,” which comes in at $30/mo less than its in-market ‘Essential’ plan — that plan costs $85/mo and includes 25GB of data.

Bell’s exclusive plan includes 20GB of shareable data at up to 250Mbps speed. Beyond the 20GB, customers can continue using data at a reduced speed of up to 512Kbps. The plan also includes unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, picture, and video messages. Moreover, the plan limits streaming video to standard definition — you can pay an extra $5/mo to “boost to [Bell’s] fastest available 5G speeds & HD video,” although apparently, you can use a VPN to bypass this limit instead.

Moreover, the Bell email notes that you can extend the offer to up to two family members. The email includes three promo codes to get the offer, which is available until January 31st, 2023.

Bell previously offered the same deal in late December, seemingly as part of its Boxing Week offers, although it was still restricted to former Bell customers. Moreover, in 2021 Bell sent letters to former customers offering a nearly identical $55/20GB plan. (Arguably, the 2021 version of the deal was better since that was before Bell added speed caps to its plans.)

Anyway, former Bell customers should keep an eye out for an email with this offer — it could be well worth switching. At least, it will be for those who didn’t nab a $45/50GB plan during Black Friday.

Telecom monopoly causing Canadians to pay higher cellphone bills: CBC investigation

It’s no secret Canadians pay some of the highest wireless bills in the world.

Many have attempted to answer why. However, according to a recent CBC Marketplace investigation, none of the explanations spell out specifics to adequately explain why telecom prices are lower in other parts of the world and even other parts of the country.

As CBC points out, there are budget brands in Canada, and most Canadians do have more than one option of wireless providers. But these brands are owned by three companies: Rogers, Telus, and Bell.

The federal government’s 2021 wireline, wireless and internet services comparison study found Canadians are among the top three countries paying the highest telecom prices in the world, along with Japan and the U.S.

CBC’s investigation also found customers pay different prices across the county. For example, wireless plans offered by Bell, Telus and Rogers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba cost roughly $10 less than the exact same plans available in Ontario and B.C.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) said that it “simply costs more to operate wireless networks in Canada than most other countries.”

Ben Klass, a researcher for the Canadian Media Concentration Project, told the publication “underlying economics” do play a role, but more needs to be done to change this.

“Despite having those similar economics, the similarly situated countries nevertheless are offering service for substantially less, or for significantly better amounts of data.”

Telecom news roundup: Bell drops 5 cents per post donation for Let’s Talk Day [Jan 7-13]

2023 is just two weeks old, but the telecom news isn’t coming in slowly. Some companies have already released Q1 financial results for the year, while others have changed the way they’ll make financial donations.

As a recap, here’s almost everything that happened in Canada’s telecom sector this week.

Business

Bell is changing its donation method for Bell Let’s Talk Day. The company typically gives five cents for every message shared on the day. But it’s now retiring the practice for a $10 million donation instead. It’s unclear why Bell went this route.

The telecom giant also rolled out 3Gbps speed and 5G+ in Atlantic Canada. The latter service is now available in Moncton, Riverview, Mount Pearl, and Halifax.

ISP TekSavvy says Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne must block Rogers’ $26-billion takeover of Shaw. Peter Nowak, the company’s spokesman, said ISPs are being “squeezed out,” and the Minister must take action.

The Competition Bureau is set to face the Federal Court of Appeal on January 24th to argue against the Competition Tribunal’s approval of Rogers’ merger with Shaw. In its original appeal, the bureau argued the tribunal should’ve solely focused on the Rogers-Shaw merger instead of Vidéotron’s commitment to acquire Freedom Mobile. The tribunal said it would’ve reached its conclusion to support the larger merger either way. In its updated appeal, the bureau said the tribunal failed to explain why that would’ve been the case.

SaskTel has launched Cloud PVR service on maxTV Stream, allowing users to record up to 300 hours of content.

The University of Waterloo is leading a group of companies and academics to create technologies that will protect Canada’s national security through 5G. École de technologie supérieure in Montréal, University of Regina, BlackBerry, NoviFlow, Rockport Networks and Rogers are part of the consortium.

Shaw reported adding 12,000 new wireless prepaid customers in the first quarter of 2023. However, the company’s overall revenue decreased.

Cogeco also released its Q1 financial results for the year, bringing in $762 million in revenue. Despite the revenue increase, the company projects growth will slow this year.

The House of Common’s industry and technology committee will hold a second hearing on Rogers’ merger with Shaw, according to The Globe and Mail.
