Bill Gates thinks pausing AI development isn’t a viable option

A recent open letter penned by Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and several other notable AI researchers addressed AI labs globally, attempting to pause Giant AI experiments, quoting profound risks to society and humanity.

Bill Gates, however, wasn’t on the list of signatories, and now he’s speaking out against those trying to pause AI development.

As reported by Reuters, Gates believes that pausing the development of AI won’t “solve the challenges” that lie ahead, and pausing development on a global scale will be difficult. Instead, we should focus on how to best use the developments in AI. “I don’t think asking one particular group to pause solves the challenges,” said Gates. “Clearly there’s huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas.”

Gates, who is now a full-time philanthropist with his ex-wife Melinda Gates, has been a vocal supporter of AI and its potential to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. In a blog post dated March 21, a day before the open letter, he wrote that AI could help reduce inequalities in health, education and agriculture. He also alluded to AI being as revolutionary as the internet in the 1990s.

Gates said he was optimistic about the future of AI and that he believed humans could control it. He said he did not think AI would make itself smarter without human input, as some have feared.

Gates’ Microsoft has also long been a supporter of OpenAI, and its investment is a clear indication that he believes in the importance of AI in the future of technology.

Bill Gates thinks AI is as revolutionary as the internet in the 1990s

Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates has published a new blog where he refers to AI technology as revolutionary as mobile phones and the internet.

In the blog post titled ‘The Age of AI has begun,’ Gates refers to Open AI’s ChatGPT as the most important advancement in technology. Gates says that the development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet and even the mobile phone. He goes on to say that he believes AI will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care and communicate with each other.

Gates said he’s interested in what OpenAI is building and has been meeting their team since 2016, and that he challenged OpenAI to train an AI model pass an Advanced Placement biology exam. “I thought the challenge would keep them busy for two or three years. They finished it in just a few months,” he wrote.

In a demonstration to Gates, Open AI’s ChatGPT got 59/60 questions correct in the exam. Gates says this inspired him to think about the possibilities of what AI can achieve in the next five to 10 years.

The impact of AI on industries is expected to be massive. It will change the way businesses operate, communicate, and compete with each other. AI will also transform the way people work and learn, making it easier for them to access information and collaborate with others. The technology will also have a significant impact on healthcare, transportation, climate change and entertainment, according to Gates.

Microsoft has long been a supporter of OpenAI and its investment is a clear indication of the importance of AI in the future of technology. The $10 billion investment will enable OpenAI to develop AI models capable of solving complex problems and enhancing human capabilities.

Bill Gates confirms preference for Android over iPhone

In a recent ask me anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates confirmed that he continues to use an Android smartphone, and hasn’t made the switch to either the iPhone, iPad, Mac or his own company’s Surface Duo.

Gates, who has been vocal about his preference for Android in the past, revealed that he is currently using a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which he received directly from Samsung Chairman JY Lee. Before the Z Fold 4, Gates was reported to be using the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and he had even travelled to South Korea to meet with JY Lee and collect the device.

Gates went on to explain that the foldable screen size of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 means that he doesn’t need to use a tablet as he can rely on his Android-powered smartphone and an unnamed Windows “portable PC.”

“I have a Samsung Fold 4 which JY Lee the Chairman of Samsung gave me when I saw him in South Korea to update my Fold 3. Of course I use Outlook and a lot of Microsoft software on it. The screen size means I don’t use a tablet but just the phone and my portable PC — a Windows machine,” wrote Gates.

In an interview in 2021, the world’s former richest man elaborated that the preference comes down to Android manufacturers being “more flexible” regarding Microsoft’s software integration, and the company’s apps being pre-installed on Android smartphones.

“Some Android manufacturers pre-install Microsoft software in a way that makes it easy for me,” he said.

The reasoning may seem odd to some, considering the availability of Microsoft apps on the App Store for iPhone. However, Gates has previously stated that while he keeps an iPhone on hand for testing purposes, it’s not the device he uses on a daily basis.

Bill Gates bashes NFTs, says they’re based on the ‘greater fool theory’

You likely won’t ever see Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates rocking a Bored Ape. At a climate conference hosted by TechCrunch, the former world’s richest man claimed that NFT projects are “based on the greater fool theory.”

Gates states that speculative overvalued assets are great until you can find another person to bid for them, though if there is no one to bid higher, the asset is as good as worthless. He went on to clarify that he is not involved in the space, and isn’t long or short on Non-Fungible tokens (NFTs).

“Obviously, expensive digital images of monkeys are going to improve the world immensely,” said Gates, firing shots at the Bored Apes Yacht Club collection, which, unironically, currently has a floor price of 83.5 $ETH ($121,323.83 CAD), down from 152 $ETH as recorded on April 29th.

Gates has been vocal about the risk that comes alongside investing in the cryptocurrency space. Back in 2021, when Elon Musk’s Dogecoin mania was in full swing, Gates suggested that retail investors should stay away from Bitcoin, whereas investors with a bigger stack of capital, like Elon Musk and Tesla, can afford to weather out the storms of the volatile asset.

“I do think people get bought into these manias who may not have as much money to spare,” said Gates. “My general thought would be that if you have less money than Elon, you should probably watch out.”

Gates stated that he is comfortable with his way of investing, which has clearly worked out for him over the years. “I’m used to asset classes, like a farm where they have output, or like a company where they make products,” he said.

Gates’s comment comes at a time when financial markets globally are in turmoil, and Bitcoin, which was born out of the 2008 recession, is faring no differently. The biggest cryptocurrency in the world is trading 69 percent below its all-time-high price achieved on November 10th, 2021.

Oprah Winfrey Is Still One of the Wealthiest

Even though the top 10 wealthiest Americans have held their spots, this is the first time in seven years that they have become less rich. Their fortunes have not increased this year as they have in the past. Bill Gates, for example, lost $7 billion since September 2008, and is now worth $50 billion.

The average age of people on the list is about 66. The youngest billionaire is the founder of the social networking site Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, 25, who is worth $2 billion.

Certain film and television stars were also found among the 400 most affluent Americans. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were listed at 97, each with $3 billion, and talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey landed at number 141 with $2.3 billion.
