Google continues pushing RCS at Apple with new Vegas billboard

We’re barely a week into 2023 and Google is already back to antagonizing Apple over the latter’s decision not to adopt the former’s RCS chat standard.

Google has been pushing a ‘#GetTheMessage‘ campaign against Apple for months urging people to use the hashtag to tell Apple to adopt RCS. Rich Communication Services is a communication protocol that aims to modernize texting by replacing the dated SMS and MMS standards. RCS includes several features that are common in other messaging platforms, such as high-resolution photo and video sharing, better group chat support, encryption, and more.

Google’s latest move is taking over a large video billboard at Harmon Corner in Las Vegas (where CES 2023 is currently going down) with a message for Apple:

“Hey Apple. It’s Android. The ball may have dropped on 2022, but you don’t have to drop the ball on fixing your pixelated photos and videos. Here’s some code to get the ball rolling…”

The billboard then scrolls through several lines of code before displaying “Help Apple #GetTheMessage” and showing the Android logo.

First time I’ve even seen an ad for android and it’s going all out

Despite the cheeky message, it’s unlikely this billboard will do much to sway Apple. The core issue is that Apple devices like the iPhone fall back to SMS and MMS when Apple’s iMessage chat platform isn’t available. Since iMessage isn’t available for Android (at least, not without hacky workarounds), messages between iPhones and Android devices happen over the older protocols. That means messaging is less secure and content sent via messages, like pictures, ends up looking blurry or pixelated.

Apple has avoided adopting RCS, however, since it would compete better with iMessage and reduce the feature’s lock-in. Back in 2021, emails revealed during the Epic Games v. Apple trial showed how Apple executives viewed iMessage as a tool to keep people on its platforms. And Apple still views iMessage this way, with CEO Tim Cook telling a journalist to buy an iPhone for his mom to fix messaging issues the journalist referenced in a question about RCS.

Beyond blurry photos, the iMessage system and iPhone’s blue and green text bubbles have contributed to a culture of exclusivity among kids with iPhones who avoid adding Android users to group chats.

The simple solution to all this is using third-party messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, or others. Of course, it can be really difficult to get people to switch — most prefer to use the default messaging option (and I’m speaking from experience).

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Google and Apple have taken shots at each other using billboards in Vegas. Back in 2019, Apple advertised the privacy of iPhones on billboards during CES — similar billboards later emerged in Toronto.

Meghan Trainor’s ‘surreal’ Beyonce meeting

Meghan Trainor says meeting Beyonce was ”just like a movie”.

The ‘All About That Bass’ singer couldn’t believe it when the pop superstar told her that she and her three-year-old daughter Blue Ivy – who she has with husband Jay Z – are big fans of her catchy music.

Meghan said: ”The most surreal moment has been meeting Beyonce. It was just like a movie. She was touching my hands – I touched Beyonce’s hands! It was at the Billboard Women in Music Awards.

”She said her and her daughter jam to my songs and music videos and then I died. I blacked out. I loved it.

”I think I said, ‘I love your baby, what a beautiful baby you have, thank you.’ I panicked!”

The 21-year-old singer hopes her debut single could set her on the path to being ”best friends” with ‘SexyBack’ hitmaker Justin Timberlake.

She said: ”It’s kind of like my shout out to Justin Timberlake – he’s bringing sexy back and I’m bringing booty back. Let’s be best friends!

”Other celebrities brought a lot of booty back in 2014.”

If she had to choose, Meghan would most like to have a butt like one of the Kardashian sisters.

Asked whose bottom she would like to have, she told heat magazine: ”All the Kardashians are just the bomb. My brother saw them in real life – I haven’t – but he said that when they walk in the room, that’s all you look at.”

Rihanna breaks Madonna’s chart-topping record

With the release of her newest single, We Found Love, from her new album, Talk That Talk, R&B star Rihanna has broken Madonna’s record for getting 20 top 10 hits in the shortest amount of time.

Rihanna is now the fastest solo artist to get 20 tracks into the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, in just six years and four months – besting Madonna, the previous record holder, by a whopping five months.

The R&B singer first broke into the top 10 in June 2005 with her single Pon De Replay, which peaked at number two. As of this week, with her debut single jumping from 16th place to ninth, Rihanna not only broke the record, but is the first artist to get a full 20 tracks into the top 10 since Mariah Carey achieved the honor in 2000.

The record, however, only applies to solo artists. When bands are included in the tally, the Beatles still hold the fastest time, taking only two years and seven months to push 20 songs into the top ten back in the ’60s.

Katy Perry ties with Michael Jackson for top hits

As her hit single, Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), slides into the top spot, pop star Katy Perry is now tied with Michael Jackson for having the most number one singles all from one album, reports MTV.

Jackson’s 1987 album Bad spawned five top tracks on the Billboard Hot 100. Now with California Gurls, E.T., Teenage Dream, Firework and Friday Night all taking a turn at number one, Perry’s third studio album Teenage Dream has tied with Bad – making her the first woman in Billboard’s history to have five top hits and the only living artist with the honor.

"What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!" Perry wrote on Twitter yesterday (August 17).

She continued: "& u know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!!"

Friday Night has sold over two million copies since it debuted on June 6. A remixed version, featuring Missy Elliot, dropped on August 8.
