Billboard names Lady Gaga Artist of the Year

Billboard, the official U.S. chart publication, has crowned Lady Gaga as queen of the pop charts by naming her artist of the year, reports Teen Music.

Although Gaga’s The Fame and The Fame Monster albums were launched in 2008 and 2009 respectively, both of them contained enough singles to generate the enthusiastic sales for Billboard to name the singer as their artist of 2010.

The Poker Face hitmaker dominated both the Billboard 200 albums and the Hot 100 singles. With The Fame and The Fame Monster albums at the top of the 2010 charts, Gaga was a natural choice for the prestigious honour.

Lady Gaga beat out Taylor Swift, preventing her from winning the honour for a second year in a row.

Founded in 1894, Billboard magazine is one of the oldest trade magazines in the world, and maintains several international recognized music charts.

Susan Boyle tops Rihanna on charts

Television is making life difficult for some pop stars these days – from Glee, which has its show compilations regularly ranking at the top of the charts, to international talent shows with contestants whose stories capture the public’s imagination.

To make the point, despite a strong debut last week, Rihanna’s Loud album is listed in third position on the U.S. Billboard 200, pushed back by Scot Susan Boyle, 49, and young American Jackie Evancho, 10, both from their respective talent shows: Britain’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent.

Interestingly, neither were winners in their respective seasons, both placing second. This week, Boyle’s album sales increased from her 318,000 debut last week to 335,000 this week – a rarity in the business.

Due to its unique and broad appeal in the marketplace, sales are expected to remain steady throughout the holiday season.

However, Rihanna can always console herself with Canada, where her album is perched at number one.

Lea Michele wins Billboard Award

For the first time in its history, Billboard will acknowledge artists with multiple talents with a new ‘Triple Threat Award.’ As the first time recipient, the magazine has selected Glee’s Lea Michele, who will be presented with the award at the 2010 Billboard Women in Music event on December 2, reports Teen Music.

“I’m really excited. At work we have a nickname for (co-star) Matt Morrison – we call him ‘Triple Threat,’ because he’s an incredible singer-dancer-actor. And now I get to borrow that phrase, which is really cool,” Michele told Billboard.

"We work so hard over here at Glee. Whenever we’re not filming, we’re in the recording studio, or the dance studio. It takes a lot to put together this show each week, so to get this specific award that honours all of those three things, is so amazing.”

Glee actors must be skilled in three different areas: theatre, dance and song, a combination often associated with artists found on Broadway, where Michele has been working since she was 8 years old.

The award-winning musical comedy-drama has become a hugely successful television show, propelling music sales for numbers showcased on each of its episodes. In 2009, the Glee cast had 25 singles chart on the Billboard Hot 100, the most by any artist since The Beatles had 31 songs in the chart in 1964.

Eminem’s fifth week at the top

Early sales records for Rick Ross and his Teflon Don seemed to indicate the end of Eminem’s Recovery reign atop The Billboard 200, but he has regained lost ground in the last few days and stood his ground for the fifth consecutive week.

Moreover, his sales have only declined 4% from last week, a minor drop that suggests he could hold steady for a while yet.

Last week, 187,000 more Eminem fans snapped up his last record, as opposed to the 176,000 units moved by Rick Ross.

In addition to the Billboard 200, Eminem also retains his top spot on the Billboard 100 best singles with Love The Way You Lie, his duet with Rihanna–the video for this single is expected any day now, and when it arrives, it should generate even more attention that will no doubt benefit the album.

Sheryl Crow’s 100 Miles to Memphis took the third position with 55,000 copies sold, while Drake follows with Thank Me Later, released one week before the Eminem’s Recovery.

AC/DC dominates concert revenues for the first half of 2010

AC / DC, Australia’s most popular band in music history, has something to celebrate during their first tour after eight years away from the stage.

They’ve made more than 188 million dollars in the first six months of their tour, more than any other band in the same period.

AC / DC’s Black Ice tour, to promote their eponymous record, has already managed to attract 1.6 million people in 2009, for total revenues of $ 135,000,000, according to Billboard magazine’s mid-year report.

This is well over ticket sales for other megaconcerts, such as Bon Jovi (52 million) and Metallica (40 million), during the first 6 months of 2010.

AC / DC, who’ve been on the road since 2008, will give a total of 40 concerts in 2010. The total gross of the tour should be around 441 million dollars by the time it wraps up, making it the second most profitable of all time.

The #1 spot still belongs to the tour The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang tour which ran from 2005-2007 and generated no less than $ 558 million for 147 performances worldwide.

Eminem finds last girl on earth

Rapper Eminem’s hit single Love the Way You Lie, featuring Rihanna, is burning up the airwaves. It now sits at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Eminem and Rihanna shot a video for the track yesterday (July 21) which was directed by famed video director Joseph Kahn.

Rihanna went straight from the video shoot into concert mode for the Los Angeles stop on her Last Girl on Earth tour. It was her first headlining show at the Staples Center. Rihanna started performing the hook from Love the Way You Lie and Eminem joined her on stage for a duet.

Jaded bloggers and reviewers were not that surprised by his appearance but the crowd loved it and went wild. The noise was reportedly as loud as when the Lakers won the NBA championship in June.

Grammy Award-winning rapper Eminem broke a record this week that was previously held by I Dreamed a Dream singer Susan Boyle. His album Recovery holds the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart for the fourth consecutive week.

Recovery blasts into number one

It was a long road to redemption for Eminem. The Detroit rapper had to deal with an addiction to painkillers which he successfully overcame. And so Recovery was born.

A new outlook on life led to new music being born. Eminem scrapped a follow up to his last album Relapse and moved in a different direction.

Recovery debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts this week. It is Eminem’s sixth consecutive album to debut in the top spot.

The album sold 741,000 copies in its first week. This makes it the best debut of the year and the best album debut since AC/DC released Black Ice in 2008. Recovery also sold 255,000 digital copies.

These numbers are quite a feat when you consider the album was leaked online before the official release.

Look for the rap star on the small screen this year. Eminem makes a guest appearance on the season finale of Entourage. He gets to have a little fun and play himself. Show creator Doug Ellin revealed: "He (Eminem) has a little conflict – a little beef – with Vince."

Glee still sits on top of the Billboard chart

The third volume of songs from the hit show Glee, The Music: Volume 3, puts the kibosh on the Stone Temple Pilots ambition to reach the number one spot on the charts after nine years out of the limelight.

Songs on the Glee soundtracks are really nothing more than covers of songs performed by actors from the series. The show’s popularity only continues to grow which means more theme soundtracks are likely.

The Glee soundtrack sold 63,000 copies last week, just 1,000 more than the Stone Temple Pilots’ eponymous album. This is the second week in a row at the top for Glee’s third release and likely its last. Jack Johnson’s new album will no doubt dethrone it next week.

Young Canadian sensation Justin Bieber continues his excellent performance. My World 2.0 sits in third spot, selling more than 50,000 more copies last week.

Justin Bieber will take back first place

Usher’s new album Raymond vs. Raymond jumps onto the prestigious Billboard 200 chart in number one place. The R&B singer knocked 16-year old Canadian singing sensation Justin Bieber from the top spot but this will not last long.

Bieber has been number one on the chart since the release of My World 2.0 on March 19. It was his second album release in less than five months. My World first appeared in stores on November 17, 2009.

Usher’s new album pushed My World 2.0 out of first place. The ironic part to this story is that Usher produced Justin Bieber’s album. He has been a mentor to the young singer since signing Bieber to his Island/Def Jam label.

Music insiders say that Usher’s Raymond vs. Raymond will not have the same sales next week. At the same time, the Bieber tidal wave persists and sales of his album are expected to stay strong. Since no other major albums are being released next week, this means that Bieber will no doubt reclaim that coveted #1 spot.

Justin Bieber will be the musical guest on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live (April 10). He will perform two songs from his new album.
