Billboard Names Nickelback Band of the Decade

Based on the list that has been compiled every week over the past 10 years, Canadian group Nickelback has claimed first position for groups with two or more members. On the general list, the band came in 7th place behind six solo artists.

Contrary to many charts that rely upon votes from editors or readers, this one was based on the weekly Billboard charts that list the best albums and singles.

Nickelback’s single, How You Remind Me, was also named the 4th best rock song of the decade.

The Canadian group managed to have 5 other songs in the top 10 at one time or another this decade, and 4 of their discs placed on the top 10 albums list.

Their best effort was none other than All The Right Reasons, which spent 156 weeks in the top 200 albums chart. The album featured the hits Rockstar and Photograph.

Eminem ranked in first on Billboard‘s list of best artists of the decade, followed by Usher, Nelly, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and 50 Cent.

Ozzy Osbourne Being Honoured by Billboard

One of rock’s legends, Ozzy Osbourne, will be honoured by Billboard magazine on November 5 in New York.

The American magazine recognises the enormous impact that Osbourne has had on the music industry, and in particular, with his live performances.  He has been chosen as the recipient of the Legend of Live award for 2009.

The prize recognises artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the music tour industry.  Osbourne made a notable contribution with Ozzfest, one of the biggest festivals in rock, which he created with his wife Sharon.

The singer’s career began in 1968 with the band Black Sabbath, before pursuing a solo career in 1979.  He has sporadically re-joined Black Sabbath, while continuing to evolve as a solo artist, and has sold more than 100 million albums during his career.

Osbourne confirmed that he will be present to accept his award.

2008’s Highest-Grossing Tours

Among all music categories, Billboard compiled a list of 20 artists who have earned the most money on tour in 2008.

While music sales seem to be plummeting, tours seem to be the money maker for artists.

The highest-grossing tour was Madonna’s, which brought in $242,176,466. Next on the list were Bon Jovi with $157,177,766, followed by Bruce Springsteen with $156,527,964. The top 5 was capped off with The Police, who earned $109,976,894 and Celine Dion, who earned $99,171,237.

Other stars landed on the list, including Coldplay in 10th position, Miley Cyrus in 15th position and Kanye West at the bottom.

Surprisingly, Madonna’s album wound up in 50th place in the category of best-selling albums.

Mariah Carey and Madonna Beat Records

The two leading ladies of pop music beat the records in the Billboard charts this week, reported Billboard.com.

Mariah Carey bumped Elvis Presley and moved into second place on the list of artists for the most No.1s on the charts.  Her single Touch My Body went from 15th to 1st position on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her 18th chart-topper.  Carey’s album, E=MC2 might equal the Beatles’ record of 20 songs in first place.

Presley also lost his title for the most songs in the top 10, when Madonna moved past him with her 37th song, 4 Minutes, to hit the top 10.  This single, which was in collaboration with Justin Timberlake, was the 68th to hit third place.

Madonna and Carey can attribute some of this success to sales made from downloads.
