Today is the last day to get the $45/50GB promo plan

Looks like November 29th will be the last day to get the $45/mo 50GB deal on offer at Fido, Koodo, and Virgin Plus.

The Big Three flanker brands added notices to their websites that list November 29th as the end date for the $45/mo plan, but the plans are still available online.

As a quick reminder, the plan on offer typically costs $65/mo but has a $20/mo bill credit for 24 months. Along with the 50GB of data, the plans come with unlimited Canada-wide minutes and messaging, as well as some other perks and features depending on the carrier. Moreover, Fido and Virgin both cap data speed at 150Mbps while Koodo caps it at 100Mbps, but Koodo customers can pick a ‘Speed Boost’ perk that bumps it up to 200Mbps.

Fido also followed Virgin in adding a one-day-only $50 bill credit offer. Customers who sign up with Fido on November 29th get a $50 bill credit and Fido will waive the $50 connection fee.

You can view Fido’s plans here, Virgin’s plans here, and Koodo’s plans here.

Shopify breaks Black Friday record with $3.36 billion in sales

Canadian e-commerce company Shopify reports its merchants made $3.36 billion in sales on Black Friday.

Transactions increased by 17 percent compared to Black Friday 2021.

Toronto, Calgary and Montreal were the top-selling cities and apparel and accessories were the top product categories.

That didn’t change much throughout the Black Friday weekend. Shopify reports Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal were the top-selling cities between November 24th and 28th.

Apparel and accessories remain the top categories. Electronics is number five on the list.

“Black Friday Cyber Monday has grown into a full-on shopping season,” Harley Finkelstein, Shopify’s president, said. “The weekend that started it all is still one of the biggest commerce events of the year, and our merchants have broken Black Friday sales records again.”

Globally, the top-selling cities were London, New York, and Los Angeles. Apparel and accessories remained the top trending categories.

GameStop reportedly leaked customers’ personal info during Black Friday shopping

Video game retailer GameStop has reportedly leaked the personal information of its customers, including phone numbers and billing addresses.

Over the Black Friday weekend, many people took to Reddit and Twitter to report that GameStop’s website had briefly displayed the sensitive details when refreshing their order pages.

“Every time I refresh the website, I can see someone else’s name, phone number, address, order history… it’s like a cycle of 4 or 5 people,” wrote one Reddit user. “Same. I’m seeing other people’s orders except mine,” replied another. A Twitter user also shared redacted screenshots of the screens they were getting:

One Reddit user even said their friend “was able to view a full credit card number by clicking on a card, but the site reloaded quickly after that.”

In a statement to VGC, GameStop said this “was test data created by our teams, not actual customer data” and “immediately fixed the same day it took place.” However, several people have since reached out to VGC‘s Andy Robinson to say the information they were shown was indeed real.

As it stands, it’s unclear how widespread these incidents have been, including whether they extend to Canada. MobileSyrup has reached out to GameStop Canada for comment and will update this story should a response be received.

In the meantime, though, it’s probably worth keeping in mind if you shopped online at GameStop in Canada this weekend. It should also be noted that GameStop did actually experience a similar issue last year in Canada. The retailer, still named EB Games at the time, displayed customer information when some people tried to purchase a PS5 online. Despite several reports made directly to the retailer’s social media handles, the company never publicly addressed the incidents.

Did you shop online at GameStop in Canada for Black Friday and ran into this issue? Let us know in the comments.

This week in Canadian telecom: Black Friday deals and Rogers-Shaw hearing [Nov. 19-25]

While Black Friday might be officially over, according to our calendars, the deals are going strong. Various telecom companies are offering deals on devices, mobile plans and internet packages.

Of course, great deals aren’t the only thing coming from the telecom sector. As a recap, here’s almost everything that happened in Canada’s telecom sector this week.

Business

Innovation Canada announced it would auction several leftover spectrum licenses (2500MHz, 600MHz and 3500MHz) in the new year. Various telecom companies, including Rogers, Bell, and Telus, have applied to participate.

4 million Canadians will upgrade to 5G in the next 12-18 months, a recent report from Ericsson shows. 5G was first introduced in Canada in 2020, and its subscriber base has grown six times since then. However, awareness remains low, and there is room for ample growth.

Ian Scott, the Chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), says more competition in Canada’s wireless market is needed. Scott made the statement at the Canadian Telecom Summit (CTS) in what is likely his last public speech as Chair.

Without Rogers’ takeover, Shaw “didn’t see a viable path forward as a standalone company,” Trevor English, Shaw’s chief financial officer, said at the Competition Tribunal’s hearing. The tribunal is examining the Rogers-Shaw merger and has concluded its third week.

The hearing also revealed Rogers executives would receive bonuses once Rogers’ takeover of Shaw is completed. Dean Prevost, Rogers’ president of integration, accidentally revealed his bonus would be $2 million.

Government

The governments of Canada and British Columbia are funding seven high-speed internet projects in the province. CityWest will complete the projects worth $5.2 million to benefit more than 1,100 households on and around Vancouver Island.

Deals

Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals continue throughout the weekend.

Ice Wireless is offering discounts on its endless, prepaid, and home phone plans for 12 months. More information is available here.

TekSavvy is selling deals on various internet packages for some residents for Black Friday.

Koodo is offering a $45/50 GB plan for Black Friday.

Roger is offering a 100GB plan for $75/ month for Black Friday.

Public Mobile is offering a 20GB plan for $35/month.

Fido, Virgin add $45/50GB plan for Black Friday

Fido and Virgin Plus have joined Koodo in offering a $45/mo 50GB Black Friday plan.

Like Koodo, both Fido and Virgin offer a $65/mo plan with 50GB of data plus a $20/mo bill credit for 24 months. That means customers pay $45/mo for two years with the plan.

The plans are only available for new activations and hardware upgrades, which means if you’re with one of these providers, you’ll need to swap to another one.

You can check out the Fido offer here and the Virgin offer here.

This is the best Black Friday SD card deal

This will be a short one, but you can never have enough SD cards. However, the quality of your SD card can step up your game.

I’ve been using these 250/Mbps Lexar cards for all my work, and I find them excellent. They’re UHS-II styled cards, so they’re much faster than your typical SD card, allowing you to record high frame rate video, a burst of RAW files and more, all without studdering the card. When I first bought my camera a few years ago, I wasn’t paying attention to my card speeds, and I would have a lot of issues filming 4K footage at 60fps. Since stepping up, my camera hasn’t errored out similarly.

I’ll also mention that the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro computers also use UHS-II SD card readers, so you can offload footage efficiently from these cards.

The 128GB version goes on sale a few times a year for around $35-$40, so right now on Amazon, it’s the lowest price I’ve ever seen at $35. This is even cheaper than the 64GB version, which isn’t on sale and sits at $39.

I hate to push sales on people, but grabbing an extra for your bag or car could be a really helpful move at this price. Beyond a new window and a home internet upgrade, this is the only thing I’m buying. Happy shopping.

Elden Ring is $30 off in stores for Black Friday

One of the best games of the year, Elden Ring, is now available for $30 off.

FromSoftware’s epic role-playing game has a 96 on Metacritic and has received praise from the gaming community as a whole. It’s also up for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.

Elden Ring came out in January, and this top-rated game is now on sale.  Unfortunately, if you’re like me with a digital-only console, you won’t be able to take advantage of this sale. The game isn’t on sale in either the PlayStation or Xbox stores, and it’s not discounted on Steam either.
