Patrick’s favourite things of 2022

As a yearly tradition at MobileSyrup, every team member writes a list of their favourite things from the past year. It’s a fun, creative exercise, but it also offers our readers a chance to get to know the team behind the never-ending tech blog posts a little more.

I found it particularly difficult to come up with five things I actually liked from 2022 — not because there wasn’t anything I enjoyed from the year, but because everything post-2019 has blended together in my brain. Still, I enjoyed several things in 2022, though some are repeats from my list last year to some extent.

With that out of the way, let’s get into it.

Halo Infinite

Just like 2021, by far, my favourite thing of the year is Halo Infinite. The game has undeniably encountered difficulties over the past 12 months, with 343 industries struggling to consistently bring new maps, features and fixes to the title. But underneath its several shortcomings is core gameplay that’s a clear throwback to the Halo 2/Halo 3 glory days of the series’ multiplayer.

This is why after roughly 23 days of in-game time over the past year in Ranked multiplayer (no, I’m not exaggerating), I still come back for more nearly every day. It’s been years since I’ve stuck with a game the way I’ve continued to play Halo Infinite, learning its ins and outs, studying update breakdowns and following the title’s esports scene closely. I even managed to hit Onyx, the game’s highest multiplayer rank, before falling back down to mid-Diamond a few weeks later.

I’m looking forward to what 2023 looks like for Halo Infinite, especially with Forge now available and Season 3 looming on the horizon.

Ioniq 5

Ioniq 5This year I entered the wild world of electric vehicles (EVs). With my rapidly ageing 2014 Ford Fiesta on its last legs, I managed to get my hands on Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. So far, I really like the Ioniq 5, especially its futuristic design, though I’m not particularly fond of the ‘Shooting Star Grey’ matte paint that requires hand washing (it looks cool, but it’s also a ton of work).

The rumours surrounding EVs losing a significant amount of range in cold weather are very accurate in my experience, given the car drops about 30 percent of its range in negative-degree weather. Thankfully, the relatively short distances I drive the car and the fact that I installed a Level 2 charger at home make this not an issue for me, but I can see it being a problem for some. My other key issue is the fact that the car doesn’t feature a back wiper, which is a must in Canada’s snowy climate.

Everything else about the Ioniq 5 is stellar, including its awesome Level 2 highway assist driving that maintains speed and the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you while keeping you between the lines (I don’t think I can ever go back), ample trunk space and that EV boost of acceleration and torque you feel as soon as you push the pedal down.

I plan to put together a detailed story (and video) about my experience with the car on MobileSyrup so far at some point in the future.

Blink-182 reunion

Few things are certain in life, but one fact that’s become evident over the past decade or so is Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge will leave the band, only to rejoin again a few years later. As my favourite band, I can’t help but be excited by this latest original reunion lineup, despite feeling sorry for Matt Skiba, DeLonge’s fill-in on California and Nine, who has unceremoniously been kicked to the curb. Everything from my taste in music and clothes to my sense of humour can sadly be traced back to discovering the band in middle school.

The band’s first new single, “Edging,” isn’t amazing, but it’s catchy and a solid sign of what’s hopefully to come when the full album drops later this year. I’m also looking forward to seeing the band live in Toronto in May (I better be given how much the tickets cost).

Hopefully, Blink-182 getting back together is a sign the universe has returned to a good timeline once again.

1883

Why are Yellowstone‘s prequels so much better than the once great, but rapidly becoming awful main TV show? I don’t know the answer to this question, but 1883 remains one of my favourite TV shows that I’ve watched in the last several years.

The western follows the Dutton family as they travel west to establish the ranch that’s featured in the main TV series. Without giving too much away, no character is safe during the perilous journey, and the mini-series takes several surprising twists I didn’t expect over its solid 10-episode run. Given how Yellowstone‘s prequels have been a one-and-done exercise so far, creator Taylor Sheridan has far more creative freedom regarding the story they weave.

I’m not sure if 1923, the Harrison Ford-led prequel-sequel, will live up to its predecessor, but if the first few episodes I’ve watched are an accurate indication, it’s poised to.

iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island

iPhone 14 ProI probably wrote these exact words last year, but this wouldn’t be my list without including an iPhone. While this year’s iPhone 14 Pro isn’t the leap forward I’d hoped for and is very similar to the iPhone 13 Pro, I’m a big fan of the ‘Dynamic Island.’ It’s one of the few truly unique additions to a smartphone in the past several years, despite not working with every app yet. The Dynamic Island holds a tremendous amount of potential, and I’m excited to see where Apple takes it with the iPhone 15 Pro.

Speaking of the iPhone 15 Pro, this year’s smartphone is expected to be the most significant leap forward since the iPhone X, including a subtle redesign, the move to USB-C, solid-state buttons and a periscope lens.

Tyler Posey didn’t allow photo hack to ‘stress’ him

Tyler Posey refused to allow having his private photographs hacked to "stress" him out.

The 25-year-old actor joined an increasingly long list of well-known public figures to have their private photos stolen in January, but Tyler says his relaxed attitude towards the incident has helped him to overcome any potential embarrassment.

Tyler – whose private photo collection included some nude images – explained: "I don’t care. It puts less stress [on you] if you just brush it off."

The heartthrob also revealed he was informed through the post that someone had managed to hack his iCloud.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Tyler explained: "I got a letter in the mail saying I’m a victim of a case of somebody who hacked iCloud. I think I had my identity taken. I think I’ve had it stolen."

Despite this, Tyler is still able to see the funny side of the hacking incident.

And the dark-haired actor revealed he would like to steal the identity of American musician Tom DeLonge – who starred in the band Blink-182 – if he had the chance.

Tyler quipped: "I would steal his identity circa 2002 era. I would go back in time for that."

The ‘Teen Wolf’ star is currently dating actress Sophia Ali, but before the celebrity duo were spotted together at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, Tyler had been trying to keep his burgeoning romance a mystery.

In fact, in one interview earlier this year, Tyler listed a number of things he loved about his new relationship, but refused to reveal his girlfriend’s identity.

He said: "I really admire her. I think she’s extremely talented and a great person. I’m inspired by her a lot, and she intimidates me sometimes, which I’m not really used to.

"I’m nervous right now talking about it. She’s beautiful, really cool, has a lot of the same interests. I could go on about that, too."

Blink 182 to record new material

Blink 182 are recording new material.

The American rockers hinted to fans on twitter that they were penning some new tracks – when bassist Mark Hoppus tweeted: "It begins"- followed by a link to his Google + profile where he had a screen shot of music software programme Logic.

His cryptic clues sparked excitement among the band’s fans who were left questioning whether they were about to release a new record.

The veteran bassist decided to confirm the rumours on his profile, where he said: "Sorry, not trying to be mysterious. Yes, this is me opening a new file for a blink-182 song. I had three ideas today, all very different. I wish I knew how to operate Logic better. These guitar tracks sound like Frankenstein’s monster singing dub step….. (sic)"

Mark – who also has another band +44 – has previously spoke of his loyalty to his Blink 182 bandmates – Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker – saying he didn’t "have any plans to write songs with anybody else right now", and that "everything I’m writing right now is for Blink 182."

The ‘All The Small Things’ singers have a busy schedule ahead which includes performing in Australia next year for the Soundwave 2013 festival.

Blink 182 to tour without Travis Barker

Blink 182 will tour without drummer Travis Barker.

The rocker confirmed he won’t be able to join the band in Australia in February 2013 due to his fear of flying, which stems from his narrow survival of a plane crash in 2008 which left four people dead.

Travis tweeted: "Had a blast playing The Eden Project, St. Austell, UK! Thank you (sic)."

A fan replied: "Hey, there’s this place called Australia that would love to see you guys too… (sic)"

Referring to his bandmates, the rocker responded: "Mark and Tom will be there in Feb of next year but with a fill in drummer cause I don’t fly. Sorry brotha (sic)."

Travis recently said he is doing his best to overcome his fear for the sake of his children and band mates Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge.

He said: "I’m contemplating getting knocked out and getting on a plane to Australia. I want to overcome that eventually. When I do, I think it’s going to be Qantas. They never had a crash, never had a fatality -knock on wood. It’s something I want to overcome for me -and my kids are scared to death to fly. I want them to witness me overcome it."

Blink 182’s European tour kicked off on Tuesday (10.07.12).

Meanwhile, singer Mark Hoppus recently collaborated with Owl City on new track ‘Dementia’.

Owl City’s Adam Young explained: "It sounds like an older B-side, rarity Blink track. It’s so cool. It’s such an honour."

Two new Blink-182 songs now online

The singles Up All Night and Hearts All Gone from pop punk band Blink-182’s sixth studio album, Neighborhoods, scheduled for release September 27, have already made their debut on the Web.

Now that the California band has begun its first tour with My Chemical Romance, they debuted two more songs from the album at that first concert in Holmdel, New Jersey on August 5.

Fans who attended the performance not only had the opportunity to hear new material, but also videotaped two more songs from the upcoming album, despite the band specifically asking fans not to.

Fans taped the two new songs from Neighborhoods and subsequently posted them online. At the beginning of the clip for Ghosts on the Dancefloor you can hear the band ask fans not copy or post the performance online.

The other new song debuting during the concert was titled After Midnight, which of course, also found its way onto the Web.

The group’s self-titled 2003 album was intended as their swan song, until they decided to reform in 2009.

Blink-182 to debut new single tomorrow

The debut single, Up All Night, from Blink-182’s long-awaited reunion album is due to drop tomorrow morning (July 15) at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time on the band’s official site, reports MTV.

The band first announced the track when they reunited in 2009, but because they were still in the recording process, they refused to play it during their reunion tour.

Now that they have finished recording their new album – their first since 2003’s self-titled LP – the group may start performing the debut single at their live shows. They hit the road again on August 5, performing in New Jersey with My Chemical Romance.

The American pop-punk band went on indefinite hiatus in 2005 when guitarist-vocalist Tom DeLonge left the group due to rising tensions between its members. DeLonge went on to form a new band, Angels & Airwaves, while the remaining two members – Mark Hoppus (bass, vocals) and Travis Barker (drums) – formed +44.

At the 2009 Grammy awards, the trio announced they would be getting the band back together, and they shortly thereafter hit the road with Weezer and Fall Out Boy on a reunion tour.

New Blink-182 album coming out soon

The end is in sight for Blink-182’s long-awaited new album, according to posts by bassist Mark Hoppus on Facebook, reports Gibson.

"I’m very excited. We’re getting to the point of the album where we talk about mixers and finishing up the songs," Hoppus wrote on the social networking site. "We deliver the album to the label on July 31, so it will be coming out during the tour."

The pop-punk trio is currently gearing up for a U.S. tour with fellow rockers My Chemical Romance. Joined by Manchester Orchestra, Rancid, and Matt & Kim, the musicians will perform over 40 shows between August 5 and October 15.

Last month, the band said they were hit by new inspiration as they neared the end of recording, and churned out a bunch of new songs.

"The most recent batch of songs are some of the best of the entire record. Very happy it’s all coming together," added Hoppus.

The as-yet-untitled album will be their first since Blink-182’s self-titled 2003 album. The band went into hiatus in 2005 after guitarist Tom DeLonge left to form Angels & Airwaves. They reunited in 2009 and have been working on their sixth studio album since.

Blink-182 recording new album

Pop punk band Blink-182 is almost finished their newest album, which means they will have new music to play for fans when they head out on tour with My Chemical Romance this summer, reports Billboard.

Drummer Travis Barker estimates that the as-yet-untitled album is about "70 percent finished." Once completed, it will be the band’s first new release since their 2003 self-titled album.

"That’s what we’re most excited about," said Barker. "It’s the first time there will be new music in nine years."

"We have until July 31st to hand the record in, and I think we’ll use every single day until then, as always," noted singer-bassist Mark Hoppus. Currently, the band is still churning out new material as inspiration strikes.

"We thought we were closing in on the end, and literally a week ago we pumped out a whole set of stuff that I think will be some of the best on the album," added singer-guitarist Tom DeLonge. "Recording is never really finished. You slide or limp into home base."

The summer concert tour – which kicks off August 5 in New Jersey – also promises to be a bigger spectacle than previous Blink-182 shows, as the band is planning a much larger stage show.

Travis Barker to launch debut solo album

Drummer for the American pop punk band Blink-182, Travis Barker, is launching a solo debut album Give the Drummer Some on February 22, reports Clash Music.

Blink-182, which was popular along with Green Day during the 1990s California punk scene, split up in 2005 and reunited in 2009, after Barker barely survived a horrific plane crash.

Regarding Barker’s accident, in 2010, lead singer Tom DeLonge stated that "if that accident hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t be a band. Plain and simple. That was fate." The group is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album.

For his solo project, Barker worked alongside many friends and guest vocalists including Corey Taylor, Slash, Tom Morello, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, and Linkin Park among others. Barker handled production with the guidance of DJ Khalil and The Neptunes.

Contrary to previous announcements, Give the Drummer Some will not contain the first single from Blink-182’s next album, Up All Night. The two groups are separate musical entities.
