Bono Named Most Influential

The survey was conducted by MTV to mark their 25th birthday.  Bono topped the list, and was followed by Michael Jackson and Madonna, who were second and third on the poll, respectively.  More than 4,000 people participated in the survey.

The other twelve celebrities making the top 15 influential stars were Kurt Cobain, Prince, Eminem, Kylie Minogue, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Sir Elton John, Beyonce Knowles, Robbie Williams, Pete Doherty, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

MTV (Music Television) was first on the air on August 1, 1981.  Today, the channel is available in 179 countries and reaches more than 1.3 billion viewers.

Bono Collaborates for New CD

The idea was born while filmmaker Gore Verbinski and actor Johnny Depp were working on the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.  "I slowly became fascinated by the idea of a contemporary reinterpretation of the sea chantey," Verbinski says. "I imagined the artists that I listen to and respect doing their take on this age-old music: the song of the sea."

The album will include 43 songs, which were recorded in London, Dublin, New York, Los Angeles and Seattle.

Bono Taking Piano Lessons

The star hopes to improve his songwriting abilities by learning a new instrument.  He recently told IOL, "My kid’s piano teacher Dawn has been teaching me the piano.  And every time she gives me a lesson, I write a new song. So next week, when (the band) meet up, I have all these songs to play for them."

Bono to Be Editor for a Day

According to IOL, the idea is to emphasize the importance of raising awareness to fight a disease that is killing many people around the world, as well as in Africa.

Bono has already been submitting ideas and articles for the special publication of The Independent, which will be on newsstands on May 16.  Half of the revenues earned for that day will go to Bono’s Product Red campaign.    The Independent has long been a partner to the cause, and has raised a lot of money to fight AIDs.

Bono Donating His Guitar

The Brazilian authorities have announced that the guitar will be auctioned to raise money for the Zero Hunger campaign.

According to Agencia Brasil, the guitar will be sold after the concert the group does in São Paulo. 

The Zero Hunger campaign’s goal is to provide three meals per day to each Brazilian, by December 31, 2006.

The celebrity singer and activist met the Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, last week.  The two men discussed the effort the Brazilian government is making to reduce famine in their country, and to develop renewable energy sources.

Last year, rocker, Lenny Kravitz, also donated a guitar to the Zero Hunger campaign.  The money raised was       $132 000.

Bono Launches a New Fight Against Aids

The initiative is called the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, and it will sell products under the name Red.

American Express, Converse, Gap and Giorgio Armani have all joined Bono in the initiative and will be selling products from the Red line.  A portion of the proceeds will be spent on fighting AIDS and malaria in Africa.  American Express is creating an exclusive Red credit card, and hopes to distribute the cards to four million clients in the next three years.

Converse will be creating a line of shoes made from African materials.  The Gap will sell t-shirts made from African material, and Armani will design Red sunglasses.

A Difficult Year for Bono the Activist

In an interview with BBC Radio, the Irish singer said that his fight against world hunger has brought certain tensions between himself and other members of U2.  He revealed, "There was one point when I thought  ‘I’m going to be thrown out of the band for this stuff’."

Referring to his fellow band members, Bono said: "They are hugely supportive spiritually and financially of the work I do, but they are in a rock ‘n’ roll band and the first job of a rock ‘n’ roll band is not to be dull."

Singer Bono Works on Film

The dramatic comedy, entitled A Version of Las Vegas, will follow the story of a son who was abandoned by his father when he left for Las Vegas.

According to Variety, the director of the film will be Barry Devlin, who has already made several documentaries for U2.

Bono previously wrote the screenplay for the film Million Dollar Hotel in 2001.

New Inductees for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

At a ceremony in New York the artists were added to the biggest names in musical history.

The evening provided plenty of entertainment, and the lead singer of U2, Bono, seranaded actress Catherine Zeta Jones.

In order to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the artists have to have been creating music for more than 25 years.  The selections are made from over 700 rock music experts.
