Is Bono a new Louis Vuitton ambassador?

According to the latest rumours published online on WWD, luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton called on U2 lead singer Bono to be its newest ambassador.

The fashion house is so far refusing to confirm or deny the news making its way around the web.

Louis Vuitton always tries to bring new and original faces on board for each of its new ad campaigns.

Its last campaign reunited soccer stars Pelé, Zinedine Zidane and Diego Maradona at the Maravillas café in Madrid. The campaign featured the three legends playing a friendly game of foosball. That campaign was put together just weeks before the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup being hosted this year by South Africa.

Bono already has a connection to Louis Vuitton. His eco-friendly ready-to-wear brand Edun is partly owned by Vuitton parent company LVMH. The company was founded by the singer and his wife, Ali Hewson, in 2005.

The Globe and Mail calls on Bono and Bob Geldof

The Globe and Mail announced that musicians Bono and Bob Geldof will be guest editors of the paper on May 10. They will participate in a special edition devoted to Africa, a subject close to both their hearts.

The newspaper is asking its readers to submit a video question they would like Bono or Bob Geldof to answer. The two artists will answer some of these questions online throughout the month of May.

It will the first time Bono or Geldof has been guest editor of a North American newspaper. Bono was previously invited to do so by the British paper The Independent.

Bono said, "I’m a huge fan of great journalism – I can’t wait to show up for work at The Globe. Our aim in this special edition is to crack down on a few stereotypes and showcase the opportunities surrounding the African continent, not just the problems."

For his part, Bob Geldof added: "The world will be coming to and looking at Canada this June. The older and the emerging economies will be once again be struggling to learn the new 21st century dance of cooperation and possibly even compromise, and this time under Canada’s leadership. The Globe and Mail, one of the world’s great papers of record, has, in a mad rush of blood to the head, agreed to let two Irish pop-singers edit their august journal for one special day, one special edition."

Readers have until tomorrow (May 6) to send in a video asking an Africa-related question. Canada is hosting the G8 and G20 summits taking place this June. The crisis of extreme poverty in developing countries, and Africa in particular, will be the focus of meetings during each summit.

Bono buys Facebook shares

U2 frontman Bono invested $90 million US in the popular Facebook social network site through his private equity firm, Elevation Partners.

The Irish singer secretly bought 1% of Facebook shares at the end of 2009, for a reported $20 per share.

Bono is a co-founder of California-based Elevation Partners, an investment fund worth $1.8 billion that specializes in media and entertainment.

Bono hopes that this investment will enable Elevation to regain some value following some unsuccessful investments.

One of those major bombs was a $460 million investment in 2007 to obtain shares of smart phone maker Palm Inc. The downtown in the global economy caused share prices of this company to drop by 35%.

Last month, editors at the financial journal 24/7 Wall Street gave Bono the dubious title of Worst Investor in America. They based their choice on "an unprecedented string of disastrous investments which even bad luck could not explain." They also said that Elevation Partners is "arguably the worst run institutional fund of any size in the United States."

This investment in Facebook might cause editors at this journal to change their tune next year.

AC/DC thinks artists should stop asking for money

Whether the cause be Ethiopia or Haiti, AC/DC’s lead singer Brian Johnson thinks it’s inappropriate for multimillionaire stars to go before the camera and ask regular joes for money to help people in distress.

In an interview with Australia’s The Daily Telegraph, the singer explains that he thinks people do not want some rich celebrity telling them to think about hungry children. “I don’t tell everybody they should give money – they can’t afford it.”

Johnson remembers what it was like when he was broke. “When I was a working man I didn’t want to go to a concert for some bastard to talk down to me that I should be thinking of some kid in Africa. Do a charity gig, fair enough, but not on worldwide television.”

AC/DC won its first ever Grammy in 37 years at the awards show last Sunday (January 31). The band has been on tour since last year promoting Black Ice and is getting ready to perform in Australia for the first time in 9 years.

Audiences are used to seeing Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie at the Grammy Awards, as they did last night (Janurary 31). Jones is the long-time producer for Michael Jackson and Richie is the 1980s star who penned, with Jackson, the song We Are The World (also produced by Jones), which raised millions for famine relief in Ethiopia.

Last night, with Jones in the crowd, Richie appeared onstage to present a tribute to his late colleague.

With Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones wants to record a 2010 version of We Are the World in order raise funds to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake on January 12.

Yesterday’s gala was the perfect opportunity to recruit artists for the project. We learned, for example, that Lady Gaga and Bono would join the team that already includes Usher, Jason Mraz, Akon, Jennifer Hudson, Carlos Santana, Enrique Iglesias and Toni Braxton.

Neither Lady Gaga nor Bono have confirmed the news, which was reported by E! Online. But it appears to come from a credible source.

Madonna didn’t sing for Haiti?

The album from the Hope for Haiti Now telethon organized last Friday (January 22) by George Clooney is made up of songs performed during the benefit concert. It has had record success so far. It sold 171,000 copies last week in the U.S. and Canada.

This is the first time that an album sold only online has made it to the Billboard 200.

Fans who buy the album pick up the music and also a memory of this uniqiue and touching event.

However, it seems that one of the evening’s performances was not as unique or memorable as first appeared. According to the Globe and Mail, music industry sources reveal that Madonna lip-synched part of her performance of Like A Prayer.

Big names have quickly come to her defence. Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw says, “My gut says Madonna showed up and sang it live.” Peter Frampton adds, “I saw it live and could tell she was singing.”

Sound technicians, however, think that Madonna was singing along with a pre-recorded vocal track, with an engineer opening a gate to the pre-recorded tape only when she sang.

Many other celebrities took part in the benefit concert like Justin Timberlake, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Bono, Rihanna and Shakira.

Bono to Sing for Haiti

The natural disaster struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti last Tuesday.  Now, several artists are coming together to encourage people to give generously to help the country to recover.

Actor George Clooney is launching a telethon that will air on a dozen American television networks this Friday (January 22).  Already, some big names from the music world, including Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys and Bono, have agreed to take part in the charity event.

The telethon, being called Hope for Haiti, can also count on performances from Sting and Christina Aguilera.  Wyclef Jean, who is a native of the Caribbean country, will help host the event with Clooney.

Bono Calls for an Internet Crackdown

Yesterday (January 3), the singer published an article in the New York Times asking for tighter controls over the downloading of music and films on the Web.

The Irish rocker wrote, "The only thing protecting the movie and TV industries from the fate that has befallen music and indeed the newspaper business is the size of the files."

The star added that the people who suffer the most from illegal downloading are "the creators – in this case, the young, fledgling songwriters who can’t live off ticket and T-shirt sales."

"Perhaps movie moguls will succeed where musicians and their moguls have failed so far, and rally America to defend the most creative economy in the world, where music, film, TV and video games help to account for nearly four per cent of gross domestic product," Bono concluded.

U2 Artists to Appear on Elvis Costello Show

On Friday (December 11), singer Bono and guitarist The Edge of U2 will be making an appearance on the CTV network for Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…

The concept of the show is to allow the legendary musician, Elvis Costello, to get to know other artists and play music with them. The concept behind Spectacle really appealed to Costello, who wanted to do more than just a formal interview like the format normally followed on American nightly talk shows.

The English musician believes that his show has an advantage, because the content is recorded over a 3 to 4 hour period, and the edition that airs is condensed into a better, richer show, in addition to the unique musical portion.

Other shows scheduled for 2010 include tentative guests Bruce Springsteen, who recently received honours from US president Barack Obama, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, as well as Ron Sexsmith.

Since December 2003, Elvis Costello has been married to singer and pianist Diana Krall, who was one of the first guests in the show’s first season.

Bono Feels Privileged

The U2 frontman dedicates a large part of his life to various different charities because the work makes him feel more gratified.

The Irish rock star has amassed a personal fortune estimated at 650 million US dollars, thanks to the success of his rock band. While Bono and the rest of the group are iconic figures in the industry, the singer admits that he knows just how lucky he is to live such a privileged life.

That is why he feels it’s important to give back and to help out the less fortunate. The star stated, "I am very well paid, overpaid and even over-rewarded for what I do."

Bono helps out in numerous charities and causes, such as the fight against poverty and diseases in Africa. He has met with many world leaders in fundraising efforts to help the millions of AIDS victims around the world.

Recently, the singer and his brand, RED, teamed with Starbucks for the release of a 4-song mini CD. The profits will go towards the fight against AIDS. The CD features I Believe in Father Christmas, by Bono himself, You & Me by the Dave Matthews Band, Redemption Song by John Legend, as well as All You Need Is Love, by the Beatles, performed by the group Playing for Change.
