Jim Montgomery calls out Bruins after Game 2 loss

The Boston Bruins were punched in the mouth by the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night, and they had no response. The Panthers, who played the Bruins hard in Game 1 of their Round 1 postseason series despite a 3-1 setback, dominated Game 2 and tied up the series with a convincing 6-3 win.

This is completely unfamiliar territory for the Bruins, who won an NHL record 65 games during the regular season and were viewed as the consensus Number 1 pick to win the Stanley Cup this year.

Multiple turnovers and poor decisions with the puck spelled doom for the Bruins last night, and they were appropriately called out by their head coach afterward.

“Players didn’t make the best decisions at moments. I thought for the majority of the first two periods we were doing some really good things with the puck, but the turnovers we had tonight were catastrophic,” said Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery in his postgame media remarks. “They were right through the middle of the ice and not typical of the turnovers we usually have. That’s not typically an area where we’re trying to make plays, where we turned it over.”

Despite the score being knotted up at 2-2 going into the third period, the Panthers would explode for four goals in the final frame. Needless to say, Boston must use it as a learning experience heading into Game 3 in Florida.

“It’s five guys working together, it’s not just defensemen and it’s not just forwards not scoring goals,” said Montgomery. “We believe in being a five-man unit in every zone. For the first two periods we thought we did that, except for some of the puck decisions that we made.”

“And in the third period, our game got away from us. For a team that’s been really good in the third period for a long time, it’s an opportunity for us to learn and grow from that.”

Game 3 between the Bruins and Panthers will be tomorrow night from FLA Live Arena starting at 7:30 PM EST.

Bruins announce discouraging update on Patrice Bergeron

The Boston Bruins took care of business in Game 1 of their first round Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Florida Panthers thanks to goals from usual suspects David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Jake DeBrusk. The best regular season team in the League is now only 15 victories away from their first championship since 2011.

However, absent from the lineup in Game 1 was captain and longtime Bruins veteran Patrice Bergeron, who left Boston’s regular season finale against the Montreal Canadiens with an upper body injury. And now, his status for tonight’s Game 2 has been determined.

According to the Bruins, Bergeron will not be suiting up tonight. What’s more, it’s because of an injury, not due to an illness.

“He’s progressing well; he’s day-by-day, but he’s a no for tonight,” head coach Jim Montgomery said.

The good news is that Bergeron did skate on his own this morning at the Bruins practice facility:

What are the chances that Bergeron isn’t able to suit up for the entire series?

“I think you are always looking at the situation, and everything goes into the situation,” Montgomery replied. “Where he’s at is No. 1; No. 2 it would be – just like the regular season – rest versus play. Where is the series at? All those factors.”

“He’s hard to keep. …he’s such a competitor; obviously, everybody knows he wants to be in, but the great thing about him is his ability to put his own personal feelings and still lead our group like he does,” Montgomery continued. “That speaks volumes about his leadership qualities.”

The Bruins and Panthers get back underway in their series with Game 2 tonight from TD Garden starting at 7:30 PM EST.

David Krejci speaks on Boston’s uncertain lineup

The Boston Bruins absolutely cruised through the regular season, re-writing the National Hockey League record book with a historic 65 win campaign and also setting several new marks for their astounding domination of their competition. This came on the heels of just about everyone expecting them to take a considerable step backward.

The real fun begins tonight, as the Bruins will be looking to prove that their regular season record was no fluke when they begin the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their opening round series sees them matched up against the Florida Panthers, who had to scratch and claw (no pun) their way into the postseason this year after having proceeded the Bruins in winning the President’s Trophy last year.

However, the Bruins may not have their full lineup available, as captain and reliable center Patrice Bergeron’s status isn’t fully determined, as head coach Jim Montgomery stated that Bergeron and a few other players have been feeling “under the weather”. He was also removed from a late season game after suffering an injury that wasn’t believed to be of the serious variety.

According to veteran David Krejci, who is making his return to the lineup tonight for the first time in six games, it will simply be the next man up mentality for the rest of his teammates.

“If you do your job, I think we’ve done a pretty good job in this room of just believing in ourselves,” he said. “If we do our job, the guy next to you is gonna do his job as well.”

Tonight’s game will get underway from TD Garden in downtown Bostons starting at 7:30 PM EST.

Bruins have a crucial goal overturned on controversial goalie interference call

The late stages of Game 1 against the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers and we’ve got a controversial goalie interference call at TD Garden.

The Bruins appeared to go up 4-1 with just over 3 minutes left against the Panthers but upon review it was clear that Bruins forward Garnett Hathaway smacked the puck out of Panthers goaltender Alex Lyon’s glove and into the net.

Check it out:

No goal. Pretty clear cut to me, but you just know the Bruins faithful won’t be happy about that one.

Brad Marchand makes Bruins history in Game 1 win

As expected, the Boston Bruins took care of business against the visiting Florida Panthers in Game 1 of their opening round postseason series. Their 3-1 victory gave them the 1-0 series advantage, and they’re now only 15 wins away from their first Stanley Cup since 2011.

And it was the usual suspects coming through in the clutch for Boston, with David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Jake DeBrusk lighting the lamp; Linus Ullmark made 31 saves.

And Marchand’s goal, which happened to be the 50th of his postseason career, also made Bruins history.

Per ESPN Stats and Info:

“Brad Marchand has 50th career playoff goal, joining Cam Neely (55) as the only players to score at least 50 playoff goals with Bruins. Marchand’s streak of 6 straight home playoff games with a goal is the longest in Bruins’ franchise history.”

The Bruins and Panthers will get back at it tomorrow night from TD Garden.

Don Sweeney shares a concerning update on Patrice Bergeron.

If you have paid any attention to the chatter regarding the Boston Bruins on social media over the last few days, you’ve probably seen quite a bit of concern and criticism surrounding the status of Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron.

After being out for a while and dealing with some injuries, Bergeron would make his return to the ice on the 13th of April for a meaningless game against the Montreal Canadiens. Bergeron accumulate just 5 minutes and 36 seconds of ice time before leaving the game early, and since exiting that game he has been notably absent from all of the Bruins’ skates.

On Sunday, Don Sweeney addressed Bergeron’s status ahead of the Bruins’ first game in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, and his comments were not at all reassuring.

“He’s taken another extra day today again obviously,” began Sweeney on Sunday. “It’s to be decided tomorrow if he feels well enough he’ll play.”

It sounds like Bergeron is dealing with both nagging injuries as well as an illness, so there will be quite a bit up in the air as the Bruins set to face off against the Florida Panthers on Monday night. The good news here is, as Sweeney pointed out, it’s not like missing a few practices is going to somehow diminish the quality of player that Bergeron is on a nightly basis.

“Patrice doesn’t need extra days of practice,” said Sweeney. “If he feels better he’ll play.”

Somewhat concerning was the fact that Sweeney confirmed Jeremy Swayman is also dealing with an illness of his own, and you have to hope that there isn’t some kind of bug going around the Bruins locker room just before the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Disaster strikes the Boston Bruins just hours before Game 1.

It’s hard to imagine how Monday morning could possibly get any worse for the Boston Bruins.

Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery has just shared what can only be described as a boatload of bad news on Monday morning, just hours before his team is set to face off against the Florida Panthers for Game 1 of their first round Stanley Cup playoffs series.

Perhaps the biggest news of the day comes in the form of a call up, with the Bruins calling up Brandon Bussi from the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins on an emergency basis. The call up of Bussi appears to indicate that the Bruins aren’t sure both Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman will be ready to play for Game 1, and there is good reason for those concerns.

Swayman missed practice on Sunday with what Montgomery described as an illness, although he did skate on Monday morning, as did Linus Ullmark. Montgomery though describe Ullmark as a “gametime decision” which may indicate that he is also feeling somewhat under the weather.

Bussi has never appeared in an NHL game before so it would be a huge step up for him to enter the Stanley Cup playoffs. That being said, he had an outstanding performance with the Providence Bruins of the AHL this season, recording a 2.40 goals against average and a .924 save percentage over 32 games.

It sounds like there is some kind of bug floating around the Bruins locker room and it sounds like several key members of the Bruins roster may be dealing with that illness at this time. Montgomery confirmed that David Krejci is in, Derek Forbort is in, and that Nick Foligno is likely to play, but the lineup remains up in the air given the questionable status of some players.

Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron will also be a gametime decision, and you have to suspect that if he misses Game 1 the Bruins will be heavily criticized for having him play against the Montreal Canadiens in a meaningless game at the end of the regular season.

The last thing you want at this stage of the season is an illness going around the locker room, and unfortunately disaster seems to have struck the Bruins at the worst possible time.

Huge update from Bruins forward Nick Foligno.

The Boston Bruins were the National Hockey League’s best team in the 2022-23 regular season and, unfortunately for their opposition in the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs, it sounds like everything is starting to line up for the Bruins as they head into those playoffs.

Injured Bruins forward Nick Foligno has provided a huge update on his status as far as the playoffs are concerned, indicating that he would be ready to go immediately. There was the expectation that Foligno would return at some point during the playoffs, but for him to return so quickly is a huge boon for the Bruins.

Foligno has been working hard to get healthy and last week even joked about the fact that he might make a few threats to make sure he was ready for the first round.

“I’m gonna try my hardest and probably throw some threats at people if not,” joked the veteran forward.

On Saturday, Foligno appeared to confirm that those threats were successful, hinting at the fact that he will be back in Game 1.

“I think I’ve made all the threats I need to make to everybody. So hopefully that did the trick and I’ll be back for Game 1,” joked Foligno once again.

There is still some concern around the status of Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, but other than that everything is lining up for the Bruins.
