Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake coming to PS5 in March 2023

PlayStation’s June State of Play presentation began with the formal reveal of the long-rumoured Resident Evil 4 remake.

Interestingly, the trailer opened with a release date: March 24th, 2023 on PS5. PS4 wasn’t mentioned, so it’s likely that this will be a current-gen only title.

The footage appeared to be running on the gorgeous RE Engine, which has powered the most recent Resident Evil games. In the footage, which features a decidedly darker tone, we see protagonist Leon S. Kennedy, as well as teases of various enemies, Ada Wong and Ashley Graham.

RE4 originally released on the GameCube in 2005 and has since been ported to all modern platforms. The game is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever made, making fans eager to see what it would like with the Resident Evil 2 remake treatment.

On top of the RE4 trailer, Capcom revealed that last year’s Resident Evil Village is coming to PlayStation VR2. A release date for the next-gen VR headset has not yet been confirmed.

More to come…

Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 logo seemingly based on $80 Adobe Stock image

After a week-long countdown, Capcom formally unveiled Street Fighter 6 on February 21st in a short cinematic trailer.

However, one element of the reveal has received some criticism: the game’s logo. As first pointed out by Ars Technica creative director Aurich Lawson on Twitter, the Street Fight 6 logo is extremely reminiscent of an image from Adobe’s Stock site.

“I knew it was generic but I didn’t realize it was this bad. They searched for “SF” on a stock logo site and rounded a couple corners and added the 6,” wrote Lawson.

Indeed, the logo is strikingly similar to the $80 USD ($102 CAD) Adobe image, which was created by a user called xcoolee. Speaking to IGN, xcoolee said they were looking to the exclusive rights to the logo to Capcom.

The design has also been used publicly before, such as in a different modified form for the SF Connexion sci-fi convention in France. Capcom has not yet commented on the logo, so it’s unclear whether this was a conscious decision on someone at the company.

For now, though, the publisher has simply said more details on the hotly anticipated fighting game will come this summer.

Street Fighter 6 officially announced by Capcom

Following what seemed like ages, Capcom has officially announced Street Fighter 6.

Capcom previously launched a countdown, ticking down until around midnight earlier today. Upon the countdown reaching its conclusion, Capcom revealed that Street Fighter would be continuing with a new entry into the franchise.

The teaser trailer that accompanied the announcement featured series figurehead Ryu ready for a fight. As he emerges from the shadows, he’s met by newcomer Luke. As the 45th character introduced in Street Fighter 5, it was expected that he would be featured in the sequel. Luke squares off against Ryu as the trailer concludes.

While Capcom revealed Street Fighter 6, ensuring fans that a new entry is on the horizon, very few details were given. The trailer unfortunately does not serve up any actual gameplay. However, what Capcom did release does a pretty good job of setting the tone. Street Fighter 6 may take a more grounded and darker approach. Though, it remains to be seen whether that translates to the final product.

The announcement of Street Fighter 6 coincides with the 35th anniversary of Capcom’s IP.

On top of announcing the new mainline entry, Capcom also revealed the Capcom Fighting Collection. This includes 10 classic titles, including the Darkstalkers games. Capcom Fighting Collection will launch on June 24, 2022, on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Capcom has not confirmed when the sequel will be launching. Additionally, Capcom has not announced any platforms. Street Fighter 5 is a PlayStation exclusive. There is no indication whether Street Fighter 6 will be available on Xbox or other platforms.

Capcom’s website has been updated with a mysterious countdown that’s set to end on Monday, February 21st.

The day coincides with the final of Capcom’s Pro Tour 2021 season, so it might have something to do with Street Fighter given the franchise is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. There’s also a possibility the developer could reveal Street Fighter VI or Resident Evil Village DLC.

Whatever might be the case, it seems like Capcom plans to keep things quiet until February 21st.

Sony releases first trailer for filmed-in-Ontario Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Sony and Constantin Films have released the first trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Unrelated to the six Milla Jovovich Resident Evil films, Welcome to Raccoon City is instead based more heavily on Capcom’s first two Resident Evil survival horror games.

Written and directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), Welcome to Raccoon City follows classic Resident Evil heroes Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy as they investigate a zombie threat brought on by the sinister Umbrella Corporation.

On the one hand, the characters’ designs are definitely faithful to the games, as are some of the locations, particularly the iconic Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City Police Department (RCPD). IGN also has an exclusive breakdown of the trailer’s video game-inspired easter eggs with Roberts. However, the CGI on some of the zombies looks quite questionable, while the trailer itself is bafflingly (hilariously?) scored to 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” perhaps better known to the internet as the “He-Man meme song.”

It’s also worth noting that the film has significant Canadian connections. On top of being shot in Sudbury, Ontario amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the film stars Toronto’s Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris, Vancouver’s Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon and Ottawa’s Donal Logue (Gotham) as RCPD Chief Brian Irons.

Other stars include Kaya Scodelario (Skins) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine and Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker.

Resident Evil: Raccoon City is set to release exclusively in theatres on November 24th.
