Nothing reveals new all-black Ear (1) colour

Nothing, a tech startup headed by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, has announced a new carbon-neutral, all-black edition of the Ear (1) wireless earbuds.

The new black edition brings a smoky matte black finish to the buds, while the basic design of the earbuds remains the same, with transparent stems and a transparent charging case with a matte black finish on the previously white painted elements.

Other than the colour change, “We kept everything else the same, from its cloud-like weight to the state-of-the-art Active Noise Cancellation,” reads Nothing’s blog post.

The new all-black buds are expected to go live on Nothing’s website 11am GMT/ 6am ET on December 13th for $129. Learn more here.

‘Nothing’s’ first smartphone could release in early 2022

It looks like ‘Nothing,’ the latest venture from OnePlus founder Carl Pei, might have plans to release a smartphone in early 2022.

According to a very vague leak from 91Mobiles, the startup is on track to release its first handset during the first part of next year. However, details on the device’s price, specs or even a glimpse at its design aren’t included in the report. That said, the story does feature information regarding a Power (1) power bank that could launch before the company’s rumoured smartphone.

Given Pei is Nothing’s founder, it’s not surprising to hear that the company has plans to delve into the smartphone space. The timing of this leak is also interesting given the company recently announced a new round of funding and a strategic partnership with Qualcomm related to “future tech products.”

Adding further fuel to rumours is the fact that Nothing purchased the remnants of ‘Essential‘ and the Essential Phone earlier this year.

Nothing’s first product is its recently released Ear (1) transparent wireless earbuds.

Carl Pei’s Nothing announces partnership with Qualcomm

London-based Nothing, a technology company created by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, announced that it has acquired $50 million in funding from strategic and private investors and is collaborating with chipmaker Qualcomm for future projects.

A collaboration with Qualcomm, whose chips are found in everything from automobiles to phones, would help Nothing develop better future products.

Further, Nothing states that the $50 million investment from strategic and private investors will be used for research & development and preparation for Nothing’s entry into a new series of product categories as it plans to expand its product ecosystem.

“Seamless connectivity is paramount to achieving our vision of a future without barriers between people and technology,” said Pei in Nothing’s press release. “We look forward to working alongside Qualcomm Technologies and our strategic investors to achieve Nothing’s next phase of growth.”

The company has said that it has shipped over 100,000 of its Nothing Ear (1) earphones worldwide within two months of release.

Additionally, Qualcomm recently announced its AptX Lossless Bluetooth audio codec, which will most likely be supported in the next generation of Nothing earbuds.

However, the collaboration might hold more significant intentions, as it can allow Nothing to enter the smartphone market, and given Pei’s experience with OnePlus, Nothing’s smartphones might take the market by storm.
