Ryan Reynolds partners with Terry Fox Foundation on special charity shirt

The Terry Fox Foundation has teamed up with Ryan Reynolds for its latest annual limited-edition shirt.

Designed by adidas in partnership with Reynolds and the Fox family, the shirt is adorned with messages from some of the people who have been inspired by Fox over the years. “Dear Terry” and “Chez Terry” are written in different fonts on the front, while the rear features actual letters and images sent to Fox and his family.

While the shirt doesn’t officially launch until April 12th (the day Fox launched his iconic Marathon of Hope), the Terry Fox Foundation has opened up pre-orders now due to significant demand. In the first 24 hours alone, the organization received more than 5,373 shirt orders — one for each kilometre that Fox ran.

The shirt comes in three variants: $25 (short sleeve), $35 (long sleeve), and $40 (performance tee). A $20 children’s t-shirt is also available. You can order the shirts exclusively from shop.terryfox.org.

“Happy to be involved with the #DearTerry initiative for @TerryFoxCanada,” wrote Reynolds on social media. “I’ve been taking part in the Terry Fox Run since second grade and can’t think of a more enduring and lovely legacy for one person. Terry Fox inspired millions in life and death.”

In addition to the launch of the shirt, April 12th will also mark the first day that Canadians can register to join and fundraise for the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research. The actual run will take place on September 17th, 2023.

Of course, there are other ways to support the charity beyond the shirt or taking part in the run. You can learn more about those here. To date, the organization has raised more than $850 million for cancer research.

Dockside pizza delivery for a good cause

After Paul Turner’s friends on Bay Lake, Ont., Rob and Patti Tilley, built a wood-fired pizza oven nearly three years earlier, Paul’s teenaged son, Jack, suggested the family start a pop-up pizza joint.

“We all laughed at the thought of pizza delivery by speedboat,” says Paul. Until they stopped laughing and thought, Why not? And why not use the cash for a good cause? “A local public school had lost a grant that funded its breakfast program. It was an easy decision as to where we’d donate the money.”

So, last year, the Turner family of four, along with friends and neighbours on the lake, grouped together to pull off a one-night, lake-wide pizza party. They made and delivered 44 pizzas in four hours. And the service was excellent: “From oven to dock it was three minutes,” says Paul. “It was kind of amazing.”

The team was organized. The kids went dock-to-dock ahead of time handing out order forms; Paul’s wife, Jennifer, made a spreadsheet to track the orders; and “We kept things simple,” says Paul. “We only offered a choice of four toppings: cheese, pepperoni, green pepper, and pineapple. Because I like pineapple.”

Paul bought the dough and sauce and ordered the boxes online, but everything else was donated. Ultimately, Bay Lake Pizza raised $600 for the school.

Paul was surprised by how many people ordered pizza, but not by how many people offered to help. “That’s just the nature of our community.”

This story was originally published as part of the collection “Better Together,” featuring inspiring cottager community initiatives, in the June/July 2020 issue of Cottage Life magazine.

Charity duffle bags by fashion’s biggest names

Condé Nast men’s title Details Magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have asked 20 menswear designers to reinterpret the classic Army Navy duffle bag.

Some of the biggest names in American menswear including Richard Chai, Billy Reid, Trovata and Alejandro Angelo have popped on their thinking hats and added their personal twist to the weekend bag.

The Rag & Bone boys have created a simple olive and black duffle featuring leather handles, while Gilded Age adorned its offering with a ‘Sack Happy’ slogan and a pinup girl, according to WWD

The bags will hit eBay on June 10, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Details x CFDA project.

Earlier this year the CFDA and eBay teamed up for ‘You Can’t Fake Fashion’, which saw 90 different designers (including Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, and Anna Sui) create ladies’ bags to raise awareness of counterfeiting issues in fashion.
