GM’s recently revealed first-edition Chevrolet Silverado EV is already sold out

GM finally revealed its anticipated Chevrolet Silverado electric vehicle at CES 2022.

The vehicle already seems to be a hit given the 2024 Silverado EV RST (First Edition) is entirely sold out. The electric truck, which has an estimated price of $119,948, isn’t slated to hit the market until Fall 2023.

According to Engadget, U.S. GM CEO Mary Barra said all the vehicles were purchased within 12 minutes of the Silverado EV going on sale. It’s currently unclear how many RST models were available to pre-order, but clearly, the love for the Silverado EV is strong.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV RST is an electric vehicle that’s estimated to be capable of travelling 640km on a full charge. The truck also offers four-wheel steering and is capable of towing up to 10,000lbs.

The regular model won’t hit the market until spring 2024 and starts at $52,448. If you’re still interested and don’t mind waiting, you can join the waitlist for that vehicle.

The Camaro Convertible Is Confirmed

The carmaker has confirmed that the Camaro convertible will also be manufactured in Oshawa, beginning in 2011.

The original plans were to market the Chevrolet Camaro convertible one year after its 2010 debut.  However, the financial crisis forced GM to change their course and hand over the reins to the US government.

However, the automaker’s number crunchers still believe that they can build the convertible. Thus, the modern take on the iconic American sports car is bound to arrive in dealerships in 2011.

Finalists Picked for Volt Paint

Approximately 27 000 people proposed a total of 13 000 different names for the Chevrolet Volt colour-naming contest.

Each state in the U.S. was represented in the contest, in which the winner gets the reward of test driving General Motors’ first semi-electric car in front of the whole world.

Although the panel will not be keeping other clever names submitted, such as Chargetruse, Recharge Silver or Voltaic Platinum, the jury has selected three finalists.

Devin McQuarrie, a 30-year-old California man, attracted attention with EV-ergreen. Florida’s Dave Thomas became a finalist with Viridian Joule. Finally, environMINT was submitted by California’s Matthew Valbuena, who wraps up the top three.

It’s now up to the public to vote for their preferred name through the site www.chevroletvoltage.com. Votes will be accepted until the morning of December 1, when the winning name will be revealed.

GM Cars Get WiFi

Created by the California company Autonet, WiFi is being introduced based on the notion that most people would prefer to surf the Web rather than watching movies in their cars.

With a range of 45 metres (150 feet), the system is compatible with all Internet connection devices for laptops, phones and game consoles.

The access points will allow passengers to check emails or watch the latest videos online, while the driver can enjoy thousands of Internet-based radio programs.

The idea will likely appeal to families and companies wishing to stay connected to the Net.  Initially, a small number of GM vehicles (mostly station wagons, vans and SUVs) will offer the option, but other models will have the option in the future.  The device will cost $499 US, with subscription costs of $29 per month.

80 Volts in Pre-Production

After the first concept and running prototypes, there are now 80 pre-production versions of the Volt out on the streets, carrying out the necessary road tests before the new model officially invades the mass market.

With its resistance to high and low temperatures and its security and reliability features, the Volt will undergo rugged testing before it hits the commercial market at the end of 2010.

The Chevy Volt is an electric car whose battery pack is recharged by the engine. It will cost around $40 000 USD, excluding buying incentives offered from particular states. Interestingly, CBS Late Show host David Letterman has reserved the first model to come off the lines.

The Corvette Goes Retro

With the success of several other car models that feature references to the past, General Motors is considering adding nostalgic elements to the next Chevrolet Corvette.

In an interview with Inside Line, the head of GM design, Ed Welburn, referred to the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray as the inspiration for the future model.

Welburn, who brought us the new Camaro, was also inspired by the muscle cars of the 1970s, and the future Corvette even made an appearance in the film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  "That car is not the next Corvette," said Welburn. "But the split window is something that I expect for the next Corvette."

Welburn added, "With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem."

The particular body style of the rear of the Corvette Sting Ray was only manufactured for one year.  In 1964, the automaker abandoned the original idea.

GM Dropping Logos

The company’s cars featured the logo on the front door, and GM believed that the badge conveyed a sense of "Made in America" pride to their customers.

Today, General Motors is more interested in giving each of its surviving brands, Buick, Chevrolet, GMS and Cadillac, their own sense of identity, and is therefore removing the GM logo.
