Cineplex, Landmark offering $3 tickets on all movies on September 3 for National Cinema Day

The Movie Theatre Association of Canada and The Cinema Foundation have partnered with theatre chains across the country to kick off National Cinema Day on September 3rd.

This inaugural cinephile holiday will offer all movies, showtimes and formats at $3 plus tax. This includes more expensive ticketed events like IMAX and VIP at Cineplex, Landmark, Cinemas Guzzo, Cinémas Ciné Entreprise, Imagine Cinemas, Magic Lantern Theatres and a variety of local independent theatres.

However, any additional fees that the theatre attaches to tickets, like Cineplex’s recently launched $1.50 online purchasing fee, will still apply.

It should be noted that National Cinema Day comes as the box office is in a slump amid a quiet release calendar. After a solid summer movie season fuelled by the likes of Top Gun: MaverickThor: Love and Thunder and Minions: The Rise of Gru, there hasn’t been any major release in the past few weeks.

Instead, recent releases include the horror movie The Invitation (starring Game of Thrones‘ Nathalie Emmanuel), the thriller Beast (starring Idris Elba), the anime movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and the action-comedy Bullet Train (starring Brad Pitt). The box office is so slow right now that Top Gun: Maverick may very well top it again this week, even over three months after first hitting theatres.

Still, if there’s a movie you haven’t seen or even want to rewatch (for example, Sony has re-released Spider-Man: No Way Home with 11 minutes of extra footage), then National Cinema Day could be a good Saturday outing.

Ahead of September 3rd, though, Cineplex is running another promotion until September 1st that offers tickets at Tuesday discount pricing.

Cineplex offering Tuesday pricing on all tickets from Aug 29 to Sept 1

This week, Cineplex is offering Tuesday pricing on all movie tickets from August 29th until September 1st. The promotion is available now and applies to regular tickets, AVX screenings as well as IMAX.

Moviegoers can now check out the Cineplex website for local screenings and will be able to see the applicable ticket prices as part of the promotion. When purchasing tickets, users can note the “CPX Tuesday” offering. This lists the applicable Tuesday promotional prices.

For instance, a regular screening of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is now available for $7.43. IMAX screenings, on the other hand, cost $13.01 per ticket.

Of course, Cineplex is still charging its recently implemented online booking fee. However, the fee is reduced slightly. As part of its Tuesday pricing, the $1.50/ticket fee is now $1.00. Since Cineplex announced its new booking fee, it has been met with a lot of criticism. The fee is said to have been implemented in order to “further invest and evolve our digital infrastructure,” according to the company.

Incidentally, this promotional lands on a week when there are no major releases. Current box office standouts include Top Gun: Maverick, which continues its long theatrical run. The aforementioned Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is in theatres as is Three Thousand Years of Longing, starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. However, there are no major blockbuster releases in sight during this promotion.

You can check out the full list of films available locally at a theatre near you on the Cineplex website if you’re craving a trip to the theatres this week.

Cineplex offering buy one, get one free on online tickets

Cineplex is now running a buy one, get one free (BOGO) promotion for a limited time.

From August 19th to 21st, use the coupon code “2022241” when purchasing through Cineplex.com or the Cineplex mobile app to get two tickets for the price of one.

Some recent releases include Idris Elba thriller Beast, anime movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Brad Pitt-led action flick Bullet Train and animated superhero movie DC League of Super-Pets.

It should be noted, however, that Cineplex recently introduced a $1.50 booking fee for each online ticket sale. That said, it’s reduced to $1 for Scene members and is waived entirely for Scene+ subscribers. Therefore, while you’ll still ultimately save with the BOGO offer, it’s not quite as much of a deal as it would have been in the past.

Showtimes can be found here.

Cineplex now charges extra $1.50 for the privilege of buying tickets online

Cineplex has introduced a $1.50 CAD booking fee for tickets purchased online and through its mobile app.

The Globe and Mail reports that the change was made earlier this month. The fee will not apply to tickets bought in-theatre, while those who are members of the free Cineplex Scene+ loyalty program will pay $1 per online ticket. That said, members of CineClub — Cineplex’s recently launched $9.99 CAD/month service which offers free tickets and discounts — will have the fee waived entirely.

In a statement to the Globe, Cineplex said this charge has been implemented to “further invest and evolve our digital infrastructure.” The theatre chain didn’t elaborate on what this actually means, simply stating that online booking fees “have been in place for many years with our exhibition counterparts globally” and are common among ticketed events for sports, concerts and more.

While this fee doesn’t contradict Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob’s comments last month about “not rushing” to increase ticket sales, it nonetheless likely comes as an unpleasant surprise for consumers, especially given the vague reasoning behind it. Many people enjoy purchasing tickets ahead of time to reserve seating, especially for big blockbusters, so this fee is certainly unsavory.

It also comes right as Canada is preparing to enter its first proper summer movie season since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the major upcoming releases include Minions: The Rise of Gru (July 1st), Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8th), Nope (July 22nd), DC League of Super-Pets (July 29th) and Bullet Train (August 5th).

Landmark, Canada’s second-largest theatre chain, told The Globe that it’s “evaluating the impact” of Cineplex’s new fee to determine what’s “best for our business.”

Cineplex to release tickets for The Batman early screening on Feb 10

DC’s upcoming Matt Reeves-directed The Batman is slated to release on March 4th in Canada, but a recent announcement by Cineplex on its Twitter has Canadian Batman fans going crazy.

Cineplex is going live with advance tickets for the movie at 12pm ET tomorrow, February 10th, which includes access to a “Fan First Event” scheduled for Wednesday, March 2nd, two days before the movie releases in Canada.

According to Cineplex, the “Fan First Event” will take place in IMAX and select UltraAVX locations across Canada.

Cineplex has given away free movie memorabilia at such ‘Fan Events’ in the past so we would guess that would be the case on March 2nd too.

Cineplex, in a reply to a Twitter user, confirmed that it would release more information about the event tomorrow, February 10th.

Scream to release on January 14th in Canadian theatres that are open

Scream (also known as 5cream) will only play in theatres in certain parts of Canada.

According to a tweet from Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail’s deputy arts editor/film editor, the anticipated horror movie will premiere on January 14th in Canadian theatres that are currently open.

This means that moviegoers in Ontario and Quebec will be out of luck as both provinces’ theatres are entirely closed amid the ongoing COVID-19 Omnicron variant surge.

Further, according to Hertz, the film will not receive an early premium video on demand release (PVOD) on platforms like iTunes and Google Play in these specific regions but will play in Ontario/Quebec when theatres re-open.

Cineplex recently announced that it has temporarily laid off nearly 5,000 part-time employees in Ontario due to the province’s mandated closure of theatres.

Scream takes place 25 years after a streak of murders occurred in the town of Woodsboro, California, with a new killer donning the Ghostface mask and targeting a group of teenagers.

Ontario to close movie theatres amid Omnicron surge

Following the Ontario government’s announcement that the province is moving back into modified step 2 of its reopening plan, the theatre chain, Cineplex, has confirmed that it will temporarily shut down operations.

“Based on recent government directives, all 67 theatres in Ontario will be closed as of Wednesday, January 5, and will reopen as soon as we are allowed,” said Cineplex in a recent Tweet.

Several high-profile films recently hit theatres, including Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix: Resurrections. In mid-December, the province’s capacity limit for movie theatres was cut by 50 percent following further government restrictions related to the surge of Omnicron COVID-19 cases.

Quebec also recently closed theatres amid tightened restrictions related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In Ontario, along with closing theatres, social gathering restrictions will be reduced to five people indoors and ten people outdoors. The capacity at weddings, funerals and religious services will also be limited to 50 percent. Finally, retailers and shopping malls will be allowed 50 percent capacity, and schools will move to remote learning from January 5th to at least January 17th.

You can find all of Ontario’s new COVID-19 restrictions on the province’s official website.

Cineplex shares update on showtimes for several provinces amid new restrictions

On the heels of releasing an updated plan for theatres in Ontario amid the surging Omicron COVID variant, Cineplex shared an update for the rest of Canada on its Twitter page.

Cineplex started by thanking guests for being patient while its teams work to adjust as restrictions change from province to province. Additionally, the company noted that it temporarily hid some showtimes from its website while assessing the new government mandates — ticketholders who can no longer find their showtime don’t need to worry as the screening is still happening.

Next, Cineplex broke down what’s happening in different provinces:

B.C., Manitoba and Newfoundland

Cineplex says it’s “reviewing what was just announced in these provinces and will update Cineplex.com shortly.” The company urged guests to check their local theatre listings for updates.

“While our goal is to honour all tickets, any guests who are impacted by these government mandates will be emailed directly by our Guest Services team,” Cineplex said.

Finally, the theatre company noted that showtimes won’t be impacted before Sunday in Newfoundland, Monday in B.C. and Tuesday in Manitoba.

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I.

Cineplex says it’s adding showtimes back to its website for these provinces. Further, guests impacted by the government restrictions have been contacted.

Finally, guests that have a ticket and have not received an email are “good to go.”

Ontario

For Ontario, Cineplex says it won’t be able to serve food or drinks starting Sunday. Additionally, locations in Ottawa will be subject to physical distancing requirements, which may affect a limited number of showtimes starting Sunday. Cineplex will contact impacted guests via email over the weekend.

You can learn more about what Cineplex is doing in Ontario here.

Quebec

Cineplex says a limited number of showtimes on Monday and Tuesday may be impacted, but all tickets for the weekend are valid. Again, keep an eye on your email since that’s how Cineplex will contact impacted guests.

You can check out Cineplex’s full statement here. It may also be a good idea to follow the Cineplex Twitter account to keep up with these updates as they arrive.
