Microsoft says Xbox is now the first ‘carbon aware’ console

Microsoft says Xbox is now the first “carbon aware” console brand.

In a broader blog post about its sustainability efforts in gaming, the company revealed a new console update that will schedule game, app and OS updates at specific times during the maintenance window to reduce carbon emissions. This means your console will awaken when it can use the most renewable energy in your local energy grid, which, in turn, can save you money.

This functionality is now available to Xbox Insiders across Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S and will roll out to everyone in the future.

Additionally, Xbox consoles now automatically update to the energy-saving Shutdown power option, which reduces power consumption when your console is turned off. This adjustable setting cuts power use by up to 20 times versus when a console is in ‘Sleep’ mode. Citing calculations sourced from the U.S. government’s Environmental Protection Agency, Xbox says that for every two consoles that switch to Shutdown for one year, they’ll save the equivalent amount of carbon removed by one tree planted and grown for a decade.

Meanwhile, Xbox Insiders will also see a new ‘Active hours’ setting. If you opt to continue using the ‘Sleep’ option, you can adjust your console’s active hours so it will only be available for remote wake during this time. During the inactive periods, it will only consume 0.5 W, vs. the 10-15 W it uses while awake.

You can view your console’s full range of energy consumption features by visiting Settings > General > Power options.

All of these features are part of Microsoft’s larger efforts to become a carbon-negative, water-positive, and zero-waste company by 2030.

Reese Witherspoon consoled Jennifer Aniston over Oscar snub

Reese Witherspoon sent Jennifer Aniston a ”sweet” message after she was snubbed for an Oscar nomination.

The ‘Wild’ star, 38 – who was given an Academy Award nod for Best Actress for her portrayal of Cheryl Strayed in the biographical drama – reached out to the 45-year-old actress to console her.

Jennifer shared to Access Hollywood: ”[Reese] sent me such a sweet email, as did Julianne Moore.

”They are all amazing women, but you know, we’re all rooting for each other and it doesn’t take away the work that was done. So it’s really, really nice.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Cake’ star – who was hotly tipped for an Oscar nomination this year – recently joked that it was ”almost just as good” to be snubbed for an Oscar than it would have been to be nominated.

She said previously: ”I was amazed at how many messages of ‘Shocked!’ ‘F**k ’em!’ and ‘Robbed!’ I got.

”I found it quite endearing and flattering that I had so many people rooting for me. It was almost just as good to be number one snubbed than to be nominated. Now I don’t have any pressure.”

Jennifer – who took on the role of Claire Simmons in the drama – also admitted that she wanted to prove to herself that she could do it.

She added: ”I needed to do it so I could prove to myself that I was able to do it. So I wasn’t sitting there frustrated that I wasn’t getting certain parts because they knew something I didn’t know – which was that I couldn’t do it…

”It’s something I hadn’t done before. To take on such a wonderfully layered, complex character.”

Rita Ora being comforted by Justin Bieber’s friend

Rita Ora is being comforted by one of Justin Bieber’s friends after splitting from Calvin Harris.

The ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ hitmaker’s DJ ex-boyfriend confirmed their break-up on twitter last week after an on/off year-long romance and the beauty has been enjoying the company of singer Khali Amir Sharieff, who was arrested alongside Justin for drag racing earlier this year.

A source told The Sun newspaper: ”Rita was a little mortified that Calvin tweeted about the split but she’s just getting on with things.

”She has been with Khalil but who knows how long it will last?”

Calvin, who tweeted that the pair had gone their separate ways ”some time ago” but wished her ”all the best” in the future, was happy to be seen photographed leaving Hooray Henry’s in Los Angeles with a group of ladies at the weekend, while Rita has been living at the new London celebrity haunt Chiltern Firehouse for the past few weeks.

The source added: ”A lot of things worked against her and Calvin, such as distance and hectic work schedule.

”And Rita is a self-admitted party girl. She likes to have fun and sometimes she can be hard to keep up with — not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

It has also been rumoured that Justin was the reason behind their break-up after she got close to him in the studio.

Meanwhile, Khali, who signed to Def Jam records in 2008, has insisted in the past that he’s all about the music and doesn’t want to get himself in trouble, despite his arrest.

He said: ”I’m not too much of a wild guy. I’m all about work, I’m all about studio. A lot of different things I do keep me stable.”

Rita, 23, and Calvin, 30, were last spotted together at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow where they both performed and Rita even watched from the side of the stage as Calvin took to the decks.

Game on in November

Michael Jackson will come back to life on November 23. That’s when Michael Jackson: The Experience arrives in stores. The video game aims to put gamers in the shoes of one of the best performers of his generation with dazzling performances and new dance moves.

The November 23 release is only related to versions for Nintendo, Wii, DS and Sony PSP consoles. Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will have to wait until the beginning of 2011 for a compatible version to become available. Developers require more time to fine tune these versions.

In Michael Jackson: The Experience, a player can dress up in one of the King of Pop’s famous outfits and recreate some of the performances that made him a pop legend around the world.

The game requires that players recreate choreography as well as sing, both of which placed Jackson in a class above the rest while he was alive.
