Android 14 Beta 1 doesn’t play nice with Themed icons

Google dropped the first Android 14 beta for Pixels this week, and people have already stumbled across a significant bug. Those who use the ‘Themed icons’ feature will end up with a constantly-crashing ‘Wallpaper & style’ app.

Themed icons, for those not familiar, is a feature that transforms app icons to match the Material You theme on your device. For example, someone using a wallpaper that shows several leaves might end up with green Material You theme accents – using Themed icons will make all supported icons match the theme using a similar green colour. (Emphasis on supported, since the one or two icons that don’t support theming will stick out like a sore thumb.)

Unfortunately for people rocking Themed icons on their Pixel phone before making the leap to the Android 14 beta, Themed icons cause some issues with the Wallpaper & style menu, causing it to instantly crash whenever you open it. While not that big a deal overall, it’s a somewhat frustrating bug because turning off Themed icons will fix the problem, but you need to access Wallpaper & style to turn off Themed icons, which you can’t do if Themed icons are turned on.

How to fix the issue

Thankfully, there are a couple workarounds available already. Android Police reports it has had success by simply changing the wallpaper, which you can do from another app if you can’t access Wallpaper & style (e.g. picking an image from your gallery to set as the wallpaper).

However, that only really works if you want to keep your icons themed and just want to change their colour. If you want to turn off Themed icons entirely, the fix is a little bit more complex. 9to5Google uncovered a fix, but unfortunately, it’s a bit of a nuclear option.

The fix in question is clearing the Pixel Launcher storage on your device. This will wipe out all your settings, including which apps and widgets you have on your homescreen, suggested apps, swiping to access the Google app and more. It also clears the Themed icon setting, which means Wallpaper & style will stop crashing (unless you turn Themed icons back on).

Clearing your Pixel Launcher storage does work – that’s how I fixed the crashing problem on my Pixel 7 – so if you’re desperate for a fix and don’t mind setting up your homescreen from scratch again, this is the way to go. To do it, head into Settings > Apps > All apps > Pixel Launcher > Storage & cache > Clear storage.

If you don’t want to clear your Pixel Launcher storage, all that remains is waiting for a fix from Google. It’s not clear how long that will take, though, and there might be more pressing issues the company is focusing on for the beta.

As far as bugs go, this one really isn’t that bad, though it is annoying. Bugs are also to be expected in a beta, so as usual, it’s probably not worth messing around with it unless you’re prepared to deal with these types of issues. That said, this is the worst issue I’ve encountered with the Android 14 beta so far on my Pixel 7, aside from some apps and games crashing.

Google Photos update causes crash when using Pixel 6 Magic Eraser tool

Headline Pixel 6/6 Pro feature ‘Magic Eraser’ is the cause behind crashes following a recent update to the Google Photos app.

A new bug reported by Android Police and spotted by users on Reddit and Twitter causes the Google Photos app to crash when launching the Magic Eraser tool. Specifically, the bug appears to impact Google Photos ‘version 5.76.0.425427310’ on Pixel 6 devices.

I tried recreating the bug on my Pixel 6, which is running Photos version 5.75.0.424739917, but opening Magic Eraser didn’t cause a crash. At the time of writing, the 5.76 version update wasn’t available to my device.

Android Police notes that the typical quick fixes aren’t working. For example, rebooting the phone, clearing the app’s cache, and restoring the Photos app to factory settings all don’t fix the problem. As it stands, it seems like once you’ve updated the Photo app, you’re stuck with the problem. If you’re still on an older version of Google Photos, you may want to hold off on any updates until there’s a fix.

This isn’t the first time Google has had problems with the Pixel 6 and Magic Eraser. Back in November, a Google Photo update removed Magic Eraser from Pixel 6 devices, but the search giant quickly fixed the error. Hopefully, there’s a similar quick fix with this problem.

Frustratingly for some, this is yet another bug in a rapidly-growing list of problems with Google’s latest flagship devices. Despite the numerous problems some have experienced with the phones, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro also apparently helped set a quarterly sales record for Google.

Tesla vehicle in Full Self-Driving mode reportedly crashed in California

A Tesla Model Y reportedly crashed earlier this month in California while in the Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta mode.

As reported by The Verge, the November 3rd crash happened in Brea, a city southeast of Los Angeles. It marks likely the first incident involving the company’s controversial driver assist feature. No one was injured in the crash, although the vehicle allegedly was “severely damaged.”

The Verge notes that the crash was reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which currently has multiple overlapping investigations into Tesla’s Autopilot system. The incident report appears to be made by the owner of the Model Y — you can read a snippet published by The Verge below:

“The Vehicle was in FSD Beta mode and while taking a left turn the car went into the wrong lane and I was hit by another driver in the lane next to my lane. the car gave an alert 1/2 way through the turn so I tried to turn the wheel to avoid it from going into the wrong lane but the car by itself took control and forced itself into the incorrect lane creating an unsafe maneuver putting everyone involved at risk. car is severely damaged on the driver side.”

Tesla has come under increased scrutiny and criticism for testing its FSD beta software with untrained vehicle owners on public roads. There are several issues with the process Tesla has chosen for the FSD beta. Instead of trained drivers, the company gathered data on Tesla drivers, gave them safety scores and then provided FSD access to those who had high scores. Moreover, Tesla has also repeatedly delayed or even reverted software updates due to bugs and other concerns.

However, perhaps one of the most significant issues is the misleading name. Full Self-Driving is not an autonomous driving system, and motorists need to pay attention and keep their hands on the steering wheel to correct the car when it makes mistakes.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that we do not yet know the full details of this particular incident. I’ve seen some people already calling parts of the crash report into question. While it’s possible — likely even — that new details will emerge as more information becomes available, it doesn’t mean that concerns about testing FSD on public roads are unreasonable or illegitimate. As FSD becomes available to more people for testing, the likelihood of incidents like this will go up. While some Tesla drivers signed up to try FSD, other drivers have not.

Paris Hilton in on prank?

Paris Hilton was in on the plane crash prank, it has been claimed.

The Egyptian company behind TV show ‘Ramex in Control’ – which filmed the heiress as she screamed and cried when she thought the aircraft giving her an aerial tour of Dubai was about to crash – circulated a document detailing the gag to a number of US celebrities in March, offering them around a million dollars to participate.

According to TMZ, the document said: ”We will act as if something is going wrong and ask all passengers to jump off the plane!!! Of course everyone will panic, we’ll be having skydivers in disguise with us on board.

”We will monitor the funny reactions from our celebrity guest when they fear jumping off the plane.”

And the document went on to claim the Dubai authorities were involved in the stunt.

It continued: ”Dubai official authorities are monitoring this show and providing us with security. If you want to make sure, you can contact the office of crown prince of Dubai, his majesty Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He himself will be supervising the progress of the project.”

Despite the claims, the 34-year-old socialite said she found the stunt ”terrifying”, and she thought the company went ”too far” with the prank.

She said: ”It was terrifying, I’ve never been in a plane that was about to go down…

”I think they went a little too far with their prank. There are things that are funny but that was not funny at all.”

It has been claimed that Paris is planning to sue those behind the prank for ”emotional distress”.
