Is This the End for CROCS?

CROCS, which was originally founded by Andrew Reddyhoff and Marie-Claude de Billy of Quebec, is in financial crisis.

The American firm that has since bought the brand has been recording significant losses for quite some time.  For the second quarter, $30 million in losses was reported and sales were down by 11%.

In 2008, several employees of the company lost their jobs.  The third quarter is expected to be much stronger with anticipated sales of $150 million.

CROCS first arrived on the market in 2002.  Now, it seems that the shoes are a victim of their own success.  Their quality and durability makes them virtually indestructible, leaving no reason for consumers to purchase replacements.

Several stars have also helped to bring the brand’s popularity, including Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Teri Hatcher, George W. Bush, and many others.

CROCS management have until late September to settle their debts, otherwise, the company will fold.

Skechers Sued by Crocs

According to a report by Women’s Wear Daily, the company Crocs has filed suit against Skechers, accusing the American company of stealing their design and logo.

Management at Crocs also claims that their competitor has even used the same materials as them to make the shoe styles Low Tide, Gypsies and Wooly Bully.

Skechers brand responded to the allegations, stating, "We believe that this lawsuit is completely without merit and will vigorously defend ourselves against such baseless accusations."

Crocs Closes Factory in Quebec City

The foam sandals created by Andrew Reddyhoff and Marie-Claude de Billy have had worldwide success.  The company was purchased by Americans and the head office is now located in Denver, Colorado.

There will be 500 employees losing their jobs in the next 4 to 16 weeks.  The employees in the sales and marketing departments, as well as personnel in Quebec City’s Crocs boutique will not be laid off.  The Canadian division will not close completely.  In fact, there will be four new stores opening across Canada in the near future.

Many employees are hoping that their jobs will be spared.  Some have already started searching for employment elsewhere.  The union is disappointed with the company’s decision to close, since negotiations with the employer had gone well.

Management indicated that the production work primarily done by the factory in Quebec City will be transferred to plants in Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam and Russia.

Crocs Doing Clothing Next

The colourful rubber shoes have been extremely successful since their release in 2004, and the company has grown tremendously as a result.

Crocs intends to launch a clothing line in the same manner, which will consist of t-shirts, workwear, children’s wear and a woman’s line later on.

A Crocs representative stated, “We’ve been able to take the same material and spin it into yarn so it has all the properties of the shoes, light, durable and breathable. Men’s and children’s clothes are a bit less complicated. Waiting until 2008 allows us to take over our women’s fashion range.”
