Crunchyroll to drop support for old Apple TV models in September

Sony-owned anime streaming service Crunchyroll will soon drop support for some of the older Apple TV models, as reported by 9to5Mac.

Starting September 15th, 2022, the Crunchyroll app will no longer run on devices that don’t support the latest 15.6 tvOS version. Those Apple TV models include:

  • Apple TV (1st generation)
  • Apple TV (2nd generation)
  • Apple TV (3rd generation)

Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K users should have no problems running the Crunchyroll app after September 15th. Furthermore, users of the older Apple TV models will still be able to stream Crunchyroll content directly from an iPhone or iPad.

In other Crunchyroll-related news, the streaming service ended free ad-supported viewing for new and continuing series.

In Canada, premium Crunchyroll access starts at $7.99 CAD.

Crunchyroll acquires rights to upcoming anime, Chainsaw Man

Crunchyroll has announced that it has acquired the streaming rights to Chainsaw Man. The manga-turn-anime will be available on Crunchyroll, subtitled and subbed sometime soon. However, the exact 2022 release date is still unclear.

The series will be dubbed in English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French and German.

Denji is a teenage boy living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. Due to the debt his father left behind, he has been living a rock-bottom life while repaying his debt by harvesting devil corpses with Pochita.

One day, Denji is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita and gets revived as “Chainsaw Man” — a man with a devil’s heart.

Reads Crunchyroll’s press release.

The director, screenplay writer, and art director (Ryu Nakayama, Makoto Nakazono and Hiroshi Seko, respectively,) all worked on one of my favourite animes, Jujustu Kaisen.

The art studio behind Chainsaw Man is MAPPA (Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association) that’s worked on Jujustu Kaisen, the final season of Attack on Titan, Dororo, Takt OP Destiny, and my absolute favourite anime, Yuri!! on Ice.

Crunchyroll also recently announced Fire Force season 3.

Crunchyroll ends free ad-supported viewing on new and continuing series

Crunchyroll, an anime streaming service now owned by Sony, has removed ad-supported viewing on new and continuing series. Viewers who want to stay up to date with the latest anime will have to upgrade to one of Crunchyroll’s premium plans.

Previously, users didn’t need to have a subscription to watch new episodes of simulcast titles, but Crunchyroll would delay the release of these new episodes by one week, while premium subscribers could watch them an hour after they release in Japan.

You’ll still be able to watch cancelled anime free — with ads, of course.

The anime streaming platform will offer some seasonal samplers for Spring 2022. Users will be able to watch the first three episodes of these simulcast titles for free:

  • Spy x Family
  • A Couple of Cuckoos
  • Dawn of the Witch
  • Tomodachi Game
  • Skeleton Knight in Another World
  • Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
  • The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
  • Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs

Three episodes of the above series will be available for free with ad-supporting viewing one week after their Japanese release date until May 31st. After that date, you’ll need to have a subscription to watch new episodes of these series.

It’s unclear if Crunchyroll will always offer seasonal samplers.

In Canada, premium Crunchyroll access starts at $7.99 CAD.

Sony also owns the anime streaming service Funimation. Recently, Crunchyroll announced that it will be taking over Funimation’s anime library, to slowly merge both platforms.
