Alienware reveals ridiculous 500Hz gaming monitor

After buying LG’s 4K 120Hz 27GP950 UltraGear monitor a few months ago specifically to play Halo infinite, I’m entirely sold on higher refresh rate displays when it comes to gaming. They’re fluid, smooth and offer a clear competitive advantage over 60Hz monitors.

But 500Hz might be pushing things more than a little too far.

Dell-owned Alienware has a history of unveiling weird and wacky products at CES, and this year is no different with the 24.5-inch AW2524H. The gaming monitor is poised to be the world’s first 500Hz monitor you can actually buy.

Will this monitor make you the esports megastar of your dreams? Probably not. The response time difference between a 360Hz and 500Hz panel is just 0.78 milliseconds, and this response time would only be available in games that support 500fps (and there aren’t many).

It’s also worth noting that hitting 500Hz requires the panel to be overclocked since its standard refresh rate is 480Hz. At 500Hz, you’re locked to just 1080p (not that any PC would be capable of pushing 4k/500Hz anyways). Further, you’ll need to use DisplayPort connectivity to hit a refresh rate over 240Hz since HDMI 2.1 caps out at that refresh rate.

Other notable specs include an IPS panel, two HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 port, four 5Gbps USB-A ports and, of course, RGB backlighting. Oh, and there’s a headphone stand on the left side of the monitor.

To be fair, Asus revealed a prototype 500Hz gaming monitor several months ago but hasn’t revealed any additional information about the device yet. On the other hand, Alienware’s AW2524H will release in North America on March 21st.

Dell unveils Surface-like XPS 13 2-in-1 and other products

Dell unveiled several new products on August 18th, including new XPS devices and a webcam.

First up, Dell’s new Surface-like XPS 13 2-in-1 (pictured above). This laptop is a fresh take on the company’s popular XPS line, offering a detachable ‘Folio’ keyboard cover and a stylus. Offering either a 12th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage, the XPS 13 2-in-1 seems like a great option for those looking for the XPS experience with some extra versatility.

Moreover, the XPS 13 2-in-1 boats a 13-inch 2K display with a 3:2 aspect ratio with touch support, DisplayHDR 400, 500-nits of brightness, 1800:1 contrast, and Gorilla Glass Victus. The XPS 13 2-in-1 will start at $1,449 in Canada and will be available on Dell’s website starting August 25th.

Also joining the XPS family is Dell’s XPS 13 Plus Developer’s Edition. Like previously Developer’s Edition devices, Dell’s new XPS 13 Plus ships with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS installed instead of Windows. Beyond sporting Ubuntu, the XPS 13 Plus Developer’s Edition offers the same hardware experience as the regular XPS 13 Plus.

The Developer’s Edition starts at $1,769 in Canada and is available now.

Finally, Dell showed off its Pro Webcam, a “professional-grade” 2K QHD webcam. Sporting a Sony STARVIS sensor and multi-element lens, Dell says the camera offers “crystal-clear picture clarity.” The Pro Webcam also boasts Digital Overlap HDR and Facial Detection Autio Exposure to help optimize the image and make sure the subject always looks good.

Dell says the Pro Webcam will be available globally on its website starting August 18th, although, at the time of writing, I couldn’t find it on the Dell Canada site. The webcam will start at $134.99 USD (about $174.16 CAD).

Dell’s newest stylus features Tile tracking tech to help you find it

Dell has a fancy new stylus with built-in finding tech powered by Tile.

As spotted by The Verge, the new ‘Premier Rechargeable Active Pen‘ works with the Tile app to help users find it when it goes missing. People can open the Tile app, tap ‘find’ and the Premier stylus will flash its LED lights and buzz.

This sounds like a pretty handy feature for something like a stylus, which could be easily misplaced. Of course, for a stylus that costs $139.99 in Canada, I would hope it could light up and alert me to its location.

As The Verge points out, Tile is working hard to expand its finding tech into just about everything. The company has worked with Intel to help track lost laptops, and the feature is now available on compatible HP, MSI, and Fujitsu PCs.

Moreover, Tile tracking can be found in headphones from Sennheiser and Skullcandy, Fitbit wearables, and even a dog tag.

Of course, all this is on top of Tile’s wide range of tracking products to help find things like keys and wallets.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that there are downsides to Tile’s tracking tech too. For example, the company recently added a tool to its app so people can scan for nearby, unfamiliar trackers that might be used to stalk them. Additionally, the new owners of Tile have a penchant for selling user location data, which isn’t great considering Tile’s ability to vacuum up that data to help you find missing items.

Dell insists the touch bar on its new XPS 13 isn’t a touch bar

Dell unveiled the newest version of its popular XPS 13 laptop at CES 2022 with a few striking changes.

There’s a touch bar “capacitive touch function row” along the top edge of the keyboard and underneath it is a “haptic ForcePad” that goes from one end to the other.

At first glance, the new XPS 13 is striking and, in my opinion, it looks fantastic. But I can’t help worrying that some of the changes Dell made to the laptop might not be that great. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to try one yet, so I’m mostly judging from photos and details shared in hands-on pieces from various U.S. publications that did get to try out the XPS 13.

Let’s start with that function row. Dell insists it isn’t a touch bar, but as The Verge aptly points out, it’s a bar of things you can touch — ergo, touch bar.

Semantics aside, the new XPS 13’s touch bar isn’t a touch bar in the sense of Apple’s much-maligned MacBook Pro series. Dell’s take on the touch bar is to basically replace each physical function key with a capacitive touch button. That means you still have, for example, a dedicated escape key. It’s just not a physical button anymore.

I’ll withhold judgement until I can spend some hands-on time with the new XPS 13, but I am concerned about accidental button presses with this new touch bar.

Working our way down, we come to the keyboard, which boasts big, square keys with a minuscule gap between them. It looks nice, but I’m concerned about how practical the keyboard would be for typing and early comments from The Verge’s hands-on reinforce those concerns. The keys still have the same 1mm travel as last year’s XPS 13, but there’s more to a good keyboard than key travel.

Finally, the touchpad. On the surface, it looks like Dell did a good thing, but according to CNET’s hands-on, the actual touch area of the touchpad doesn’t extend all the way across the laptop. Instead, it stretches from the outside edge of one Alt key to the other. While that’s still quite a large touchpad offering, the lack of indicators where the touchpad ends and the palm rest begins will likely prove confusing for some users.

Functionally, the touchpad sounds more like Apple’s MacBook trackpad. It doesn’t actually ‘press’ when you click it — instead, it mimics the feeling of clicking with haptics.

Again, it’s too early to say one way or another whether the changes Dell made to the XPS 13 are good, bad or otherwise. There are reasons to be concerned, sure, but I’d wait for reviews first. Dell says the XPS 13 will start shipping worldwide in the spring and the expected starting price is $1,199 USD (about $1,523 CAD).

Alienware’s Concept Nyx is all about streaming games over your local Wi-Fi

In classic CES fashion, Dell-owned gaming PC company Alienware is showing off a concept device you’ll probably never be able to buy that can power games across multiple screens in your home.

Engadget, which detailed Alienware’s ‘Concept Nyx’ extensively, described it as a Plex server but for video games. In short, Nyx appears to be a powerful gaming PC set up as a server. It handles all the complexities of gaming — rendering the content, connecting to networks, receiving inputs, etc. Then, Nyx streams the visuals over your local Wi-Fi network to whatever display you want to use, be it your TV, monitor or smartphone.

Perhaps the most unique part of Concept Nyx is Alienware’s pitch is that it can play multiple games simultaneously, even on the same screen. This looks really cool on paper (and in Alienware’s promotional material), almost like the couch co-op gaming of the early console era, except everyone on the couch can play their own game.

In practice, the feature doesn’t quite live up to Alienware’s pitch, according to Engadget reporters who went hands-on with Nyx. Engadget says running games simultaneously on a TV caused them to show up in tiny windows rather than cover half the screen like how Alienware shows it in promo materials.

Still, it is Concept Nyx, after all, so some hiccups are to be expected. Alienware representatives also couldn’t share details about what powers Nyx.

Further, since Nyx is a concept, there’s a chance it will never become a product that people can actually buy. Engadget notes that Alienware previously integrated parts of concept devices into new products. I could see future Alienware gaming PCs shipping with a Nyx app that lets you run games and stream them to another screen.

There are already ways to stream games over your local network

Of course, several products already do this. Popular PC game store and launcher Steam has a built-in ‘Remote Play’ feature that lets users launch a game on their computer and stream the visuals to another device (like a laptop with Steam or a smartphone). There’s also Nvidia’s ‘GameStream’ for playing games from your Nvidia-powered PC on an Nvidia Shield TV device.

While there’s a lot of potential with Nyx and other local streaming options, I also have to note that local streaming isn’t that great (at least in my experience). The few times I’ve tried to use Steam Remote Play, I’ve run into countless issues. Whenever I finally got it to work, the actual experience playing games was frustrating due to immense input lag. Others have had better luck than I have, but local streaming still needs some work before it can be a reliable option for most gamers.
