DeLorean EV unveiled with futuristic looks and features

DeLorean has officially unveiled its electric vehicle (EV) model after it was teased back in February.

The rendered images of the DeLorean Alpha 5 EV were released on the website to those with early access on May 30th, showing a refurbished look, collaborated with Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ItalDesign, while keeping the same 1980s colour style.

However, instead of the vehicle having two seats, like in the Back to the Future model, it will sport four seats along with electric-powered gull-wing doors. The EV is powered by a 100kWh battery pack that has a range of over 300 miles (400km).

As for performance, DeLorean EV will have all-wheel drive, an acceleration of 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in 2.99 seconds and, if you are planning to time travel, 0-88 mph (0-142km/h) in 4.35 seconds.

If you plan on purchasing the DeLorean EV, the expected price is to be in the $175,000USD range (approximately $221,000 CAD).

DeLorean will publically reveal the vehicle on June 1st at 12am ET, followed by a formal showing Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show on August 18th.

DeLorean DMC-12 will be reborn as an EV on August 18th

Back in February, the DeLorean Motor Company gave the world a sneak peek of its upcoming gull-wing door EV DeLorean. At the time, the company said it will reveal the EV sometime in 2022.

Now, via Twitter, the company announced that it will show off its EV at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18th.

“Excitement is rising like the doors of our iconic sports car, and we are revealing the next generation prototype three days earlier than planned on the most prestigious stage at Pebble beach,” said Troy Beetz, CMO of DeLorean Motor Company.

The company says it will reveal the name of its new EV at the Monterey Car Week, along with what the future holds for the brand. For reference, the original DeLorean was called the DMC-12.

“The long-awaited concept car is the culmination of a 40+ year history with the prestigious design company Italdesign and DeLorean’s new interpretation of a modern icon,” reads the company’s news release.

Before the DeLorean Motor Company went out of business in 1982, it released the original $25,000 USD (approximately $31,000 CAD) DMC-12 which was well recognized for being an extremely underpowered vehicle with iconic gull-wing doors — as of now, the vehicle’s value translates to about $71,000 USD (roughly $90,000 CAD).

We are not sure whether the new release will be a common EV. From the looks of it, it seems like the upcoming vehicle will just be a concept car that not many would be able to get their hands on.

The DeLorean is back, but this time it’s an EV

There truly are no original ideas, but at least this one is tied to a pretty cool looking roughly 40-year-old car.

In a new brief teaser, the DeLorean Motor Company showed off a glimpse of the return of its iconic car, stating that “The future was never promised” and “Reimagine today.”

The approximately 15-second video also offers a glimpse of the DeLorean’s iconic gull-wing doors and includes several search-friendly hashtags, but beyond this, nothing else is revealed about the car. It’s unclear how close the new electric vehicle (EV) DeLorean will stick to the original car’s design, but based on this short teaser, it seems to be a more modern take on the iconic car’s blocky design.

The new DeLorean is set to be revealed at some point in 2022.

The original DeLorean was sold between 1981 and 1982. Along with its unique design, the $25,000 USD (roughly $31,000 CAD) — equivalent to $71,000 USD (about $90,000 CAD) as of 2020 — car is best known for being a very underpowered vehicle. The original DeLorean Motor Company shuttered operations back in 1982.

Most likely know the original DeLorean from Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future film franchise, which released several years after the car’s demise in 1985.

It’s unclear if Back to the Future is also getting a remake to go alongside the new DeLorean EV.

DeLorean To Revive Pontiac Solstice

On the company’s Facebook page, DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) revealed that they are planning to bring back the Pontiac Solstice.

A sketch published by the company shows a portion of the front of the Pontiac Solstice convertible, and a portion of the coupe’s rear. Everything is titled "2011 Solstice" leaving two short years for DMC to get to work.

The Pontiac Solstice has not been produced since last summer, and was anticipated to entirely disappear in 2010.

General Motors has not discussed the possibility of DMC’s plans, but we’re hoping that they will seriously consider the undertaking.
