Discord Nitro introduces a soundboard, themes and super reactions

Discord has made the prospect of subscribing to its paid-tier subscription, Discord Nitro, all the more tempting by introducing a handful of new features.

One implementation that stands out above the rest is the ability for Nitro members to access a soundboard, allowing users to send audio reactions to voice channels. The soundboards will be filled with audio files supplied by Discord or uploaded by managers of each individual community.

Whether this is for better or for worse is yet to be seen, but the idea of responding to your friends with a duck quack or the classic air horn blare seems like something that fits in perfectly with Discord’s atmosphere.

Other Nitro perks include ‘super reactions’, which give certain emoji reactions a little more flare than normal. These will be limited to five per week for Nitro subscribers and two per week for Nitro Basic and Classic subscribers.

Five new themes are also being added for members:

  • Retro Storm
  • Strawberry Lemonade
  • Aurora
  • Sepia
  • Neon Nights

Subscribers will also have the ability to dress their avatar’s up with limited-time decorations, such as adding hats, flowers or mushrooms on top of their portraits.

The company will be giving two super reactions to all users to test out the new feature, even if they aren’t subscribed.

Discord voice chats launches on PS5

PlayStation 5 users are getting a new software update.

The most significant addition is a new social feature that allows users to join a Discord Voice Chat on their PS5 consoles. You need to link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts from your PS5 console, PlayStation.com or the Discord app.

You’ll then need to use the Discord app on your mobile or computer to get a Discord voice chat going on your PS5 console, and the Discord app needs to be updated to the latest version.

You can also start or request a Share Screen from your friend’s profile and send a Share Screen request or start sharing your screen with a friend directly from the profile page. You only need to click the Share Screen icon on your friend’s profile.

Other changes in the system update include variable refresh rate support for 1440p and a filter for when you add games to your game list. With the launch of PS VR2 games, you can now filter VR titles through your library.

Further updates include a ‘join game’ icon in party chats and a “friends who play’ tile that shows which games are in your game hub.

You can manually upload game capture to the PlayStation app, quickly transfer data from one PS5 to another, and more. Most updates were shared in February, but features are now rolling out to all users.

Discord chat is officially coming to PlayStation 5, beta members get first access

Discord integration is officially hitting Sony’s PlayStation 5.

Beta participants are the first to gain access to Discord, the popular cross-platform voice chat platform. With Discord now available on PlayStation 5, beta members can chat with friends across PC, mobile and even Xbox.

In a blog post, Discord announced its partnership with PlayStation is expanding. Last year, Discord and PlayStation announced connective support, linking PSN with Discord, and enabling players to show the games they are playing on the communication platform. Now, this partnership has expanded to allow PlayStation 5 players to access Discord’s chat functionality.

Those selected to participate in the Discord beta test will receive an email containing a code. This code grants access to the beta software, and once it’s redeemed, players will be able to update their PlayStation 5 console to the beta software.

Afterwards, they can navigate to the ‘Settings’ option and into the ‘User and Accounts’ and ‘Linked Services.’ Here, a new Discord option allows you to link your PSN account with Discord. Once the tab is selected, players can scan a QR code with their phone to take them to a Discord webpage and enter an eight-digit code.

At the outset, Discord’s integration on PlayStation seems very similar to the experience on Xbox consoles when it first arrived. Players can use the mobile app to select ‘Join on PlayStation’ and transfer the voice connection from their phone to their headset or even the DualSense microphone. As of now, Discord’s presence on PlayStation isn’t native. Therefore, players won’t be able to launch into a voice chat without using a phone or PC.

The company notes that access for all PlayStation 5 owners is “coming soon.”

PS5 Discord voice integration spotted online

Discord is testing a voice chat feature for PlayStation 5 users, but it’s not yet available to the public. @advaithj1 on Twitter spotted the voice integration and posted the images online on the social media platform.

It’s still unclear when this feature will officially go live, but it’s rumoured to release in March. However, it appears to be in the beta version of the Discord mobile app in a closed test. However, it’s unclear if this is just an internal test at Discord.

It’s currently unclear how exactly this feature will work on the PlayStation consoles. Based on the images, you’ll need to sign in with your PlayStation ID, which then brings users to the PlayStation Mobile app. It’s suspected that it will allow the call to transfer to the PS5.

However, it’s weird this feature will only be available on PS5 and PS4, as the screenshot shows the join chat on PS5 but doesn’t say it on the PS4 section.

PlayStation already has a pretty good chat feature, so it’s unclear if PS4 players will continue on this chat service or if everyone will be forced to switch over to Discord, but only PS5 players will be able to use the app.

Discord Voice chat is coming to Xbox, available to Insiders now

Xbox and Discord are entering a significant partnership, which sees the latter’s Voice chat feature land on Microsoft’s console. Across Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, players will be able to chat with anyone on Discord via voice channels or group calls.

This update is rolling out to Xbox consoles today. However, only Xbox Insiders are able to access the new voice chat feature for the time being. Xbox confirms that Insiders are able to connect with friends across console, PC, and mobile. However, a wider rollout will take place “soon.”

Many Xbox owners have been requesting Discord Voice chat integration. This new partnership strengths further cross-platform initiatives in the industry.

Adding Discord Voice chat on console enables players to now chat with friends playing Halo Infinite on both console and PC, for instance. As many games already offer cross-play, Discord integration streamlines the way players can interact with one another.

Discord Voice shares a very similar menu to Xbox game chat. Players are able to see who is in a voice call. Additionally, players can adjust the individual volume of each member, mute and report to Discord in the event of harassment. There are also overlay options available. Players can also switch between Discord Voice and Xbox game chat.

For Xbox Insiders looking to use this new feature, they will have to link their Discord account to their Xbox. To do so, Insiders must navigate to the party menu on their console. From there, they must select ‘Try Discord Voice.’ This will bring up a prompt with a QR code. Scanning this will take the player to the Discord and Xbox apps to connect and setup a two-way link between the two.

Once the accounts are linked, players can jump into a Discord call as usual. Via the Discord app, players can select a newly added ‘Join on Xbox’ option. This will alert the Xbox app to transfer the voice chat from Discord to the Xbox console.

Xbox states that a wider expansion of this feature is expected “in the coming weeks.” Though, it remains to be see how much a of wide release the company intends.

Be warned: Morbius in its entirety is circulating on Discord

The latest of Rick-Roll pranks has recently plagued Discord servers, and instead of it having Rick Astley grooving to “Never Gonna Give You Up,” it includes Jared Leto.

People have started sharing a WEBM link on Discord servers which actually is the full 90-minute Morbius film. Yep, the same movie that received a 5.2/10 IMDb rating and a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes (RT). “Cursed with uninspired effects, rote performances, and a borderline nonsensical story, this dreary mess is a vein [vain] attempt to make Morbius happen,” reads the Critics Consensus on RT.

This might be one of the few instances when people are complaining about receiving a full movie for absolutely free that was released fairly recently. Considering that the movie is considered one of the worst Marvel titles, the trolling and hate might just be justified.

If you see a video titled “Full-1_1” on a public Discord server, proceed with caution.

Apple, Meta and Discord deceived by hackers posing as law enforcement to share customer information

Apple and Meta have reportedly handed over customer data to hackers who masqueraded as law enforcement officials, according to a Bloombergreport.

The incident happened in mid-2021 and resulted in the two tech giants giving away customer IP addresses, phone numbers as well as home addresses to the incognito hackers.

Bloomberg says that three people familiar with the situation have reported that the hackers raised an “emergency data request,” which usually happens during a criminal investigation when law enforcement wants information about a specific account. ‘

Requesting said information needs a search warrant signed by a judge, although “emergency data requests” don’t, and are usually raised in life-threatening situations.

According to the report, Snap also received a similar data request from the hackers hiding behind the facade, though it is still unclear whether Snap gave in or not.

“We review every data request for legal sufficiency and use advanced systems and processes to validate law enforcement requests and detect abuse,” a Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg. “We block known compromised accounts from making requests and work with law enforcement to respond to incidents involving suspected fraudulent requests, as we have done in this case.”

“As we have done in this case,” says the spokesperson after the company he works for handed over crucial customer information to the hackers. Nice.

Investigation into the matter has revealed that some entities behind the data breach are minors from the U.K. and the U.S. and had links with a cybercrime group known as “Recursion Team.”

Intelligence found that Recursion is no longer in operation though several of its members are now believed to be in direct affiliation with hacker group Lapsus$, who recently hacked its way into Nvidia, Microsoft, Samsung, Globant and more.

The stolen information was then used by the hackers to carry out harassment campaigns and financial fraud.

In a later update, Discord added that it also received fraudulent “emergency data requests,” and abided.

Discord working on native M1 support for Mac app

Popular game-focused chat platform Discord is finally working on an update that will officially support Apple’s new M1 chips.

Some Reddit users (via 9to5Mac) spotted the change in Discord’s ‘Canary’ version. Discord Canary is available from the platform’s website and is a space for the developers to test new versions of the app before officially pushing out the updates to the stable app.

The latest Discord Canary version runs natively on M1 Macs.

As 9to5 points out, native M1 support brings benefits like improve energy efficiency and performance. However, Discord is an Electron app, which means it may not offer as noticeable gains as other native Mac apps.

Regardless, M1 support is a step in the right direction and should help make Discord a little better on Apple computers.

You can download Discord Canary from the Discord website, but you may want to wait for the stable version if you don’t want to deal with bugs and other instabilities. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet when Discord will push the official native M1 update to users.
