Canada’s Finance Minister cuts her Disney+ subscription following rising cost of inflation

In June, inflation in Canada sat at just over eight percent, according to the Bank of Canada, much higher than the two percent target. While the rate has declined slightly since then, the two percent target is nowhere close to being achieved.

Canadians have seen the cost of almost everything increase. During an interview with Global News, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, suggested one way to cut costs is by examining personal expenses.

For Freeland, that meant cutting her Disney+ subscription, as her family no longer used it. “It’s only $13.99 a month that we’re saving, but every little bit helps.” Freeland agreed that things are challenging for Canadians, many of whom look at their expenses the same way. “I believe that I need to take exactly the same approach with the federal government’s finances.”

While Freeland makes a valid point, given every little bit counts, it’s worth noting the flaws in her statement. The rise in inflation has led to higher costs for groceries, gas, and other necessities, much more than a $13.99 monthly subscription.

A subscription to Disney+ is also much cheaper than other options available in Canada. For example, NetNetflix’semium options can go up to $20.99 a month.

However, I agree that Canadians should cut costs wherever they can, especially if it’s something they no longer use it.

Disney’s Pam & Tommy says Montreal is in Ontario, among other Canadian errors

Since its debut earlier this month, Pam & Tommy has garnered largely positive reviews for its depiction of the salacious story of actress-model Pamela Anderson and rocker Tommy Lee. However, it’s also now drawn some criticism for some wild inaccuracies when it comes to Canadian geography.

As mentioned by novelist and writer Christine Estima on Twitter, the February 23rd episode of the Hulu/Disney+ Canada series features a business card for the Toronto-based Labatt brewery that contains some pretty glaring mistakes.

To start, “Labatt Breweries” is listed as being located in “Montreal, Ontario,” rather than “Montreal, Quebec” — a pretty major error given that they’re two completely different provinces. What’s more, the postal code is “M5V” instead of “M5J,” while the area code is “515,” which is for the U.S. state of Iowa, not Ontario.

Such Canadian mistakes are especially ironic considering the subject of the whole show, Pamela Anderson, is from Ladysmith, B.C. What’s more, Vancouver’s own Seth Rogen co-stars as Rand Gauthier, the disgruntled employee who steals Anderson and Lee’s sex tape. Rogen’s production company, Point Grey, is also one of the companies behind Pam & Tommy.

To that point, one reply to Estima’s tweet even joked that Rogen will lose his Canadian citizenship over this.

Hopefully, Rogen issues a statement promptly to address this massive insult to Canada.

Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows are coming to Disney+ Canada in March

Disney has confirmed that Marvel’s full lineup of Netflix shows will make its way onto Disney+ Canada on March 16th.

Earlier this month, the entertainment giant revealed that it had regained the rights to the series following years-long exclusivity to Netflix. The shows will remain on Netflix until March 1st.

For context, the shows are:

  • Marvel’s Daredevil (three seasons)
  • Marvel’s Jessica Jones (three seasons)
  • Marvel’s Luke Cage (two seasons)
  • Marvel’s Iron Fist (two seasons)
  • Marvel’s The Defenders (one season)
  • Marvel’s The Punisher (two seasons)

Originally running between 2015 and 2019, Netflix’s Marvel shows were generally praised for offering a grittier, street-level take on the Marvel universe. Daredevil, in particular, proved so popular that actors Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin) have since reprised their roles in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, respectively.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it’s expected that Cox and D’Onofrio will pop up again in future Marvel projects. There’s also always the possibility that other actors from the Netflix shows, like Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones or Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, could return.

For now, though, Marvel’s Moon Knight is also hitting Disney+ in March. The series stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, and is expected to be darker than Marvel’s other Disney+ shows.
