Lily Tomlin’s hilarious life advice

Lily Tomlin offered advice to aspiring actors as she picked up her SAG Life Achievement Award – and her tips included wear sunscreen and don’t go out when drunk.

The 77-year-old actress had the audience at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium in fits of laughter as she accepted the prize from her friend Dolly Parton at the ceremony on Sunday (29.01.17) and shared her tips for surviving in the industry for so long.

Giving advice to young hopefuls, she said: "Along with telling them to wear sunscreen, I suggest a few other things I think you may find helpful.

"Don’t leave your house when you’re drunk. If you’re already out, you must learn to tell when you’ve had too much to drink.

"Listen to your friends. When they stop talking to you and start talking about you, saying things like, ‘Did she have a purse?’

"Don’t be anxious when you miss an opportunity. Behind every failure is an opportunity someone wishes they had missed.

"Mind what [Henry David] Thoreau said, ‘Beware of any enterprise that requires new clothing.’ Doesn’t that ring sort of true tonight to a few of you? It does to me."

After Dolly – who had stepped in to present the award after their ‘9 to 5’ co-star Jane Fonda fell ill – presented a montage of her friend’s most famous work, Lily expressed her amazement she’d done so well as she only ever "showed promise" to be "trouble".

She said: "When I recall my youth, I can’t even point to a time where I showed promise to be anything but trouble. When I was a senior in high school, my counselor called me into his office to tell me they were thinking of holding back my diploma.

"Turned out I’d been a student for four years but, I had been absent one. Cumulatively I’d been absent one year. I would literally stay out, 12, 13 days in a row if my hair didn’t turn out right. Those of you from that era know what I mean because hair was really important. But, somehow, I learned to turn my flaws into spiritual lessons."

Dolly’s introduction was equally hilarious as Lily’s speech as she poked fun at her famous assets.

The 71-year-old country singer quipped: "I almost didn’t get in. They were holding me backstage, kept wanting to see my IDs. At least I think that’s what he asked to see. It was something with IDs, maybe double Ds. Well, I’m glad to get that off my chest.

"I might say Lily is getting an award for something I’ve spent my whole life trying to avoid, a SAG award. I see something sagging, I’m calling Dr. Markowitz, to get that nipped, tucked, and stuffed right away."

Dolly Parton to host charity telethon for Tennessee fire victims

Dolly Parton is set to host a telethon to raise money for those affected by the Tennessee fires.

The 70-year-old country legend has been busy raising money for the families whose houses were burnt down during the wildfires that ravaged the Great Smoky Mountains last week through her charity fund My People – which was set up as part of her Dollywood Foundation – and now the ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker is planning on hosting a three-hour telethon in order to encourage further donations.

Whilst many of the details have not been thought out yet, it has been reported that the telethon will take place in Nashville on December 13, and all proceeds will go to the My People fund.

Dollywood director of communications Pete Owens said in a statement: "It’s really a work in progress.

"We’ve made the announcement, so we’re working through the logistics now and determining the partners that are going to work on it."

The news comes as the My People fund has managed to raise $1 million since it launched on Wednesday (30.11.16), with the goal to provide $1000 a month to families affected by the devastating blaze.

Dolly – whose Dollywood Theme Park had to be evacuated after the blazes ripped through Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge early last week – said: "As you may know by now, there have been terrible wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains, the same mountains where I grew up and where my people call home.

"I have always believed that charity begins at home. That’s why I’ve asked my Dollywood Companies – Including the Dollywood Theme Park, and DreamMore Resort; My dinner theatre attractions including Dixie Stampede and Lumberjack Adventure; and my Dollywood Foundation to help me establish the My People Fund."

The Dollywood Foundation website still accepting donations to the cause on the foundation’s website.

The site reads: "We want to provide a hand up to those families who have lost everything in the fires. To aid in their recovery effort, the Dollywood Foundation will provide $1,000 a month to all of those families who lost their homes in the fires for six months so that they can get back on their feet."

Dolly Parton to donate $1000 a month to families in Tennessee

Dolly Parton will donate $1000 per month for six months to families affected by the Tennessee wildfires.

The 70-year-old singer has announced plans to make the donations through her Dollywood Foundation as well as her various Dollywood Companies – including the Dollywood Theme Park and DreamMore Resort – in the hope that her charitable deeds will be able to rebuild the homes and lives of those affected by the fires which broke out in the Great Smoky Mountains earlier this week.

The ‘9 to 5’ singer said: "As you may know by now, there have been terrible wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains, the same mountains where I grew up and where my people call home.

"I have always believed that charity begins at home. That’s why I’ve asked my Dollywood Companies – Including the Dollywood Theme Park, and DreamMore Resort; My dinner theater attractions including Dixie Stampede and Lumberjack Adventure; and my Dollywood Foundation to help me establish the My People Fund."

The Dollywood Foundation website is currently accepting donations for the cause, where it says more information will be available to the public on Friday (12.02.16).

The site reads: "We want to provide a hand up to those families who have lost everything in the fires. To aid in their recovery effort, the Dollywood Foundation will provide $1,000 a month to all of those families who lost their homes in the fires for six months so that they can get back on their feet."

The news comes after the country legend had to have her theme park evacuated on Monday (11.28.16) after the blazes ripped through Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Dolly said at the time: "I have been watching the terrible fires in the Great Smoky Mountains and I am heartbroken. I am praying for all the families affected by the fire and the firefighters who are working so hard to keep everyone safe.

"It is a blessing that my Dollywood theme park, the DreamMore Resort and so many businesses in Pigeon Forge have been spared."

Dolly Parton nearly ‘froze to death’

Dolly Parton and her family nearly "froze to death" when she was younger.

The 70-year-old country singer has revealed her brood nearly tragically perished one winter when it snowed particularly hard trapping them in their house in the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, and the star believes it was a "miracle" they survived.

She said: "We lived way back in the mountains, and we had boarded up our windows to keep the snow and wind out, and had no idea it was going to snow like that. We got trapped in there.

"We thought we were going to die and our little tears were frozen on our little faces.

"We were frozen, no fire, no food, no nothing. And so it had to have been prayer that melted the snow around us and got us out of there. That’s kind of like our Christmas miracle.

"Momma had a lot of faith, Momma had those visions and dreams that she sensed something was going to happen, but because of her great faith, she prayed us through."

Dolly was recently reminded of the incident as it will feature on her festive TV movie ‘Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love’ – a follow up from last year’s ‘Coat of Many Colors’ small screen film – but the star admitted some of the stories involving her parents were tough to watch.

Speaking to ‘Entertainment Tonight’, she added: "The first one was real emotional because it was the first time on camera my family had been exposed.

"But this one has so many things in it that will really pull at your heart."

In the film, Alyvia Alyn Lind returns as young Dolly, Jennifer Nettles reprises her role as Dolly’s mum, and Ricky Schroder is back as her father.

She said: "It’s so cute, I’ve always loved Ricky Schroder since he was a little bitty boy.

"He looks a lot like my dad’s people. It makes me miss Mom and Dad a lot."

Kylie Minogue won’t marry until same-sex marriage is legal in Oz

Kylie Minogue and her fiancé Joshua Sasse will not marry until same-sex marriage is legal in her native Australia.

The couple announced their engagement in February this year after five months of dating and the 28-year-old actor has now revealed the lovebirds will not tie the knot until gay and lesbian couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples Down Under.

Joshua says her and Kylie, 48, are keen to tie the knot in her hometown of Melbourne but not until the country has marriage equality.

Speaking to Australia’s Network Seven, he said: "There are chances of a Melbourne wedding … [but] we will not get married until this law has passed in Australia."

Both Joshua and Kylie – who has always had a huge gay fan base -are supporting the Say I Do Down Under campaign which is calling for a law to be passed which will allow men to marry other men and women to wed women.

The ‘Galavant’ star – who launched the campaign with Kylie and Dolly Parton at the weekend – admits he was shocked when he discovered that same sex marriage was illegal in Australia.

He added: "When I found out that gay marriage was illegal in Australia, I was astounded. I simply can’t fathom on any level, whether it’s moral or religious or anything, that I have the right to get married and to marry the person that I love and that somebody else doesn’t because of their sexual orientation."

In September, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull introduced legislation to allow a public, non-binding vote on same-sex marriage to take place in early 2017.

Joshua and Kylie are not the only celebrities calling for same-sex marriage to be legalized in Oz.

Margot Robbie – who is from Queensland – appeared on TV show ‘Saturday Night Live’ at the weekend wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan "Say ‘I Do’ Down Under", with a rainbow map of Australia.

Dolly Parton won’t ride rollercoasters

Dolly Parton won’t go on rollercoaster rides in fear her breasts will "fall out".

The 70-year-old singer songwriter has admitted she has avoided belting up to go to her theme park Dollywood for a "long time" because she gets motion sickness and is always worried "something" may slip out in public whilst she is turned upside down on a loop-the-loop.

Speaking to Q magazine about her concern for rides, the buxom blonde said: "That was a long time ago!

"We’ve got several rollercoaster the kids are really enjoying but they’re too much for me.

"I don’t usually ride the rides because I have a tendency to get motion sickness or worse – I’m afraid something will fall out that we don’t need to see in public!"

And the iconic country musician has revealed she also can’t stand waiting for people and gets very "irritated" when people aren’t punctual.

She explained: "I get a little irritated when people aren’t on time and make me run late. It’s my pet peeve. I’m a very prompt person so it gets me more upset than anything."

Meanwhile, Dolly – who has been married to her husband Carl Deane for 50 years – has admitted she regularly returns to her childhood home in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, to see her family and to renovate her property in a bid to make it look "poor", despite spending "a couple million dollars" on.

Speaking about her hometown and the new project, the ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker said: "I was back home just a few weeks ago! I always go back to see my kinfolk. I bought the old place and fixed it up, almost like a movie set, trying to recapture how it was.

"I’ve spent a couple million dollars trying to make it look like we’re poor again."

Dolly Parton gun claim

Dolly Parton once pulled a gun on a man who mistook her for a prostitute.

The 70-year-old singer was "propositioned" by a man while walking in New York with a female pal, but when she showed him the weapon she kept concealed in her bag, he quickly left them alone.

She is quoted by National Enquirer magazine as saying: "I was in New York walking with a girlfriend when some man came on to us.

"He thought we were hookers I guess, and he propositioned us. Well, I stuck my hand in my bag, pulled out my gun, pointed it at him and told him if he didn’t take a hike I’d turn him into a soprano.

"He left us alone right quickly after that."

The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker – who is married to Carl Dean – learned how to use a firearm after receiving death threats from a strange man in Kentucky several years ago.

And he isn’t the only person to have threatened her life, as she was reportedly also targeted because of the "gay days" that were staged at her Dollywood theme park in Tennessee until 2009, when organiser Ryan Salyer ended the event after numerous threats from the Ku Klux Klan, who also staged a protest there in 2004.

A source said of the threats: "Dolly has now been targeted by the KKK for more than 10 years. She’s a Christian, but she marches to her own beat and says she isn’t in the business of judging anyone.

"Dolly won’t back down on what she believes in, but she’s gotten weird letters from some unhinged people that have really unnerved her.

"She feels like she’s got a bulls-eye on her back."

Dolly Parton helped gay family members come out

Dolly Parton has helped members of her family who are gay or lesbian come out.

The 70-year-old country music legend – who has a huge fan base amongst the LGBT community – had no idea what it meant to have feelings for someone of the same sex at first, but she did everything she could to support her homosexual relatives by nurturing and embracing them.

She explained: "In my early days we did not know (what gay was). It didn’t take me long to know that people were different and that was always fine with me.

"I was different too, and I embraced and accepted them and I knew them. I knew them well.

"Later on, I did find out I have many gays and lesbians in my own family. We accept them, we embrace them."

The ‘Jolene’ hitmaker also thinks it important that the LGBT community aren’t made to feel "separate" or "different" from everybody else.

She told PrideSource:"Oh, there are some in the mountains who still don’t know quite what to make of it or how they should feel about it, but they’re ours and they’re who they are and we know they’re wonderful and they’re like us.

"We love the fact that they are who they are and we nurture that. We don’t try to make them feel separate or different.

We embrace it."

Dolly – who is married to Carl Dean – previously said she thinks she has a strong following of gay people because she loves and accepts them for who they are.

Asked what she attributes her large gay following to, she previously said: "They know that I completely love and accept them, as I do all people.

"I’ve struggled enough in my life to be appreciated and understood.

"I’ve had to go against all kinds of people through the years just to be myself.

"I think everybody should be allowed to be who they are, and to love who they love. I don’t think we should be judgmental.

"Lord, I’ve got enough problems of my own to pass judgment on somebody else."

Dolly Parton: I’m going to be the best 800-year-old you’ll ever want to meet

Dolly Parton thinks she would be "the best" 800-year-old woman of all time if she lives to that age.

The 70-year-old ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker has admitted she wants to stay young "forever" and is scared when she remembers her age but thinks if she was to live for many more years she would be the greatest old woman to have "ever" existed, and will be the person everyone will be desperate to meet.

She told Stylist magazine: "I wish I could stay young forever, I’m 70 now. The number is a little scary, but I’ve got a good attitude and I’m making the most of every year.

"If I live to 800, I’m going to be the best 800-year-old you’ll ever want to meet."

And the country singer plans to live every day like it is her last by filling her days with "productive and creative" things to do.

She explained: "I just want to make the most of the years I’ve got and fill them up with as much good, productive and creative stuff as I can, and I’m going to try to leave as much as I can for my family. So I’ll continue to work. But there’s no way to stop time – you just roll away with it."

However the buxom blonde has revealed regardless of her age she has no plans to retire any time soon and would only be inclined to stop making hit records if her or husband Carl Dean – who she wed in 1966 and remarried again this year to celebrate their 50 year anniversary – fell ill, although Dolly has admitted she would still perform and tend to her spouse if she ever needed to.

She said: "I have no intention of ever retiring. The only way I’d ever slow down is if my health fails, or if my husband was not well. But even then, if he was healthy enough to travel I’d just take him on the bus and have a nurse with me. I can take care of him and still do my work."

Dolly Parton wants to uplift mankind

Dolly Parton tries to "uplift mankind" with her music.

The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker is upset by the "political turmoil" in the US as it prepares for a presidential election, but she hopes her performances can make people "feel a little better" and reassured that things will be OK.

She said: "Everything is so crazy and chaotic out there right now. I do see the divide.

"I just try to make people feel a little better. Let them know that it’s going to be OK.

"I’m hoping that as soon as this is over that we can all settle down, no matter who is the president and try to act a little better and stop all this fighting and bickering amongst ourselves and try to mend our country. So when I go out there to perform, I hope to uplift mankind, glorify God and just have a big time myself."

The 70-year-old singer’s latest album, ‘Pure and Simple’, is inspired by her long marriage to Carl Dean.

She explained to People magazine: "I’ve been married for 50 years this year – my husband and I renewed our vows this year – and so I thought this would be a good year to have a love album, love in many colours."

Dolly thinks the title track is "almost divine".

She said: "It’s a positive love song about two people being in love and it being almost divine in it’s purity and simplicity."

And she is hoping another song on the album, ‘Forever Love’, will get a lot of airplay at weddings, admitting it was played when she and Carl renewed their vows.

She said of the track: "That’s the one we played when we got married again.

"That’s the one that fit that really well. It will make a beautiful wedding song for other people too!"
