Dolly Parton reveals secret to happy marriage

Dolly Parton says the secret to her 50-year marriage is distance.

The 70-year-old singer tied the knot with Carl Thomas Dean in 1966 and joked that being on the road for her career has helped their marriage to survive.

Asked for the secret to making a marriage last, Dolly told Vanity Fair: "Yeah, stay gone! We’ve been married for 50 years and I’ve been gone for about 47 of those. But the truth is, we’ve always been very compatible. To those that follow the signs, I’m a Capricorn and he’s Cancer, and those are very compatible signs. But we’ve always had a good time together, and he’s got a great sense of humor and so do I. And he loves staying home and I love staying gone, so it’s worked out really well."

Dolly also revealed her belief that the couple have become even more compatible as they have gotten older.

She said: "Well, it’s just grown deeper. The longer you live with somebody, the more you know them, and you take on all their traits as well as them taking all of yours. And you just have a deeper and better understanding – more of an appreciation. But we’ve always had a great respect for each other, and I think that’s been the thing that really and truly sustained us through the years."

Meanwhile, Dolly revealed that her song ‘I’m Sixteen’ was inspired by her sister, who found love again after a "couple of really bad marriages".

She said: "I kind of patterned that after one of my sisters that had had a couple of really bad marriages, brokenhearted, and felt she’d never love again and felt it just wasn’t meant to be. But she found someone! And they both had had broken marriages. And they’re just like little teenagers and I just get such a kick out of watching them. I thought, ‘God, they think they’re 16!’ And so that’s really where I got the idea of writing that song."

Dolly Parton’s ‘sacred and private’ marriage

Dolly Parton keeps her marriage "sacred and private".

The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker refuses to divulge details about her relationship with Carl Dean, who she wed in 1966, and believe that is the secret to their long romance.

She said: "My husband is not one who wants to be just thrown out there. He’s very private, and I’ve always respected that for him and about him. And so, we just try to live our lives.

"Everybody is not entitled to every single thing you do and thought you think, although I do share as much of my life as I possibly can. I’m not holding back any information, but there are just some things that are sacred and private. I do think that’s had a lot to do with it. If we had fallen victim to every tabloid story and all that – we just try to find the humor in it."

And the 70-year-old singer insists she isn’t just a "character" when she’s on stage and is very similar in real life, just a bit quieter.

She added to Vogue.com: "I don’t turn on and off. If I’m out in public, I have to be really on, and more vocal, and present myself. But I have this other side to me that’s very quiet.

"Sometimes I can go a whole day without saying anything. My best friend, Judy, and my husband, Carl, when we’re comfortable, we might not say much of anything. But I’m not a different person – I’m just a little quieter."

Meanwhile, Dolly and Carl recently renewed their wedding vow to celebrate 50 years of marriage, where they decided to sell pictures from it to raise money for children’s charities

She said at the time: "If I had it to do all over, I’d do it all over again, and we did. I’m dragging him kicking and screaming into the next 50 years. Wish us luck. In all honesty, the only way I was able to get Carl to do any of this in the first place was that it was a great opportunity for us to raise money for some very worthy causes."

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean renew wedding vows

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean have renewed their wedding vows after 50 years of marriage.

The couple, who tied the knot on May 30, 1966, recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary with a vow renewal ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee and the fiercely private pair have decided to sell the pictures from the ceremony to raise money to benefit children’s charities.

Dolly, 70, who recently kicked off her ‘Pure & Simple Tour’, said: "If I had it to do all over, I’d do it all over again, and we did. I’m dragging him kicking and screaming into the next 50 years. Wish us luck. In all honesty, the only way I was able to get Carl to do any of this in the first place was that it was a great opportunity for us to raise money for some very worthy causes."

And although 73-year-old Carl – a businessman who ran an asphalt-laying company – has shunned the limelight despite being married to one of the biggest stars in the world, he agreed to do his first interview to go along with the pictures.

Speaking about his reaction the first time he saw Dolly, Carl said: "My first thought was I’m gonna marry that girl. My second thought was, Lord she’s good lookin’. And that was the day my life began. I wouldn’t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth."

The couple tied the knot in 1966, after two years of dating, in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, in front of just Dolly’s mother.

The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker previously admitted her spouse prefers to live his life in private because he is a "loner".

She said: "My husband is a loner. He doesn’t particularly care about being around anybody but me. He’s just always asked me to leave him out of all this. He does not like all the hullabaloo."

However, Dolly has insisted Carl – who she met at the Wishy Washy Laundromat when she moved to Nashville in 1964 – is incredibly supportive of her.

She said: "He’s always been supportive. He’s like a brother and a father and a friend and a husband and a lover – all of those things to me. I think he’s kind of proud that we’ve been in it this long!"

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean are to renew their wedding vows.

The 70-year-old country music star and her 73-year-old spouse are due to celebrate their 50th anniversary on May 30th and plan to celebrate the milestone by reaffirming their commitment to one another.

The couple wed in 1966 after two years of dating in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, in front of just Dolly’s mother and the ‘Jolene’ singer – who released her debut album ‘Hello, I’m Dolly’ shortly after tying the knot – is planning for the vow renewal ceremony to be a much bigger event.

She told People magazine: "We’re going to get married again! I’ll have a beautiful wedding dress, ’cause I didn’t have a big, long wedding dress when we got married and we’ve got a suit for him, so we’re going to dress up and take a bunch of pictures."

Though Carl – a businessman who ran an asphalt-laying company – has stayed out of the spotlight throughout his wife’s career, rarely even appearing at her concerts, he is to go public with the vow renewal ceremony as Dolly is planning on selling the photographs from their special day

to raise funds for her literacy charity.

Dolly Parton has Broadway musical on her bucket list

Dolly Parton wants her life story to be made into a musical on Broadway when she dies.
The 70-year-old country music legend has plenty of things left to do on her bucket list, including starting her very own beauty line, and even beyond the grave she has ambitions as she wants her story turned into a show sound tracked by her own songs when passes away.
In an interview with Paper magazine, she said: "I’ve got buckets on both sides. I do someday hope to see my life story on Broadway as a musical. I’d love to have a cosmetic line. As far as a bucket list, I think I do pretty much what I want – just takes a lot of time sometimes."
The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker is about to embark on her biggest tour in 25 years and plans on telling stories about her life through her songs and how she grew up in her grandfather’s church.
Asked what her favorite tour traditions are, she said: "I always talk about (the song) ‘Coat of Many Colors’ and my mom. Now that the ‘Coat of Many Colors’ movie did so well, I also wrote a song called ‘Mama’ that I’ll probably sing before I start talking about the home section [of the show]. I’ll be talking about my grandpa and how I was brought up, which means a lot to me. I’ll be doing my gospel segment from the fact that I grew up in my grandpa’s church."
The buxom blonde beauty will visit over 60 cities across North America in support of her brand new double-disc release, ‘Pure & Simple With Dolly’s Biggest Hits’.
Of the tour, she previously said: "We’re so excited to get out there and see the fans again. I’m really looking forward to singing songs the fans have not heard in a while, as well as the hits, while debuting a few new ones off ‘Pure & Simple’."
