Snoop Dogg and Drake win big at BMI urban music awards

Rappers Snoop Dogg, Drake, and B.o.B were big winners at the 2011 BMI Urban Music Awards on Saturday (August 27), reports Teen Music.

When accepting his award, Snoop Dogg was sure to thank both Dre and Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, head of his label Death Row Records: "We built Death Row, we built a sound and you can’t take that away," said Snoop. "And I’m thankful to both of them because wasn’t nobody from Long Beach rapping then. But I can do 20 more years of this; it ain’t over yet."

Toronto-born performer Drake, meanwhile, received the songwriter of the year award, while 22-year-old American record producer B.o.B became the youngest recipient of the prestigious song of the year award for his track Nothin’ on You, featuring Bruno Mars.

Drake album launches in October

Canadian rapper Drake is set to release his second studio album Take Care on October 24, reports Altsounds.com.

The first single, Headlines, has already risen quickly to top of the iTunes sales chart, selling 139,274 copies within days of its release. The song was produced by Noah ‘40’ Shebib, Drake’s longtime collaborator, and quickly became the number one most added song at American media company Urban Radio.

Last June, Drake unveiled a second single, titled Marvin’s Room, with a darker, more subdued rhythm, expressing the atmosphere of a drunken late night. Since its launch, Marvin’s Room was the subject of several remixes by artists such as JoJo and Chris Brown.

Recently, Drake was honored with the Hal David Starlight Award at the 42nd annual Songwriters Hall of Fame gala and will also receive the Allan Slaight Award during Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards this fall.

The Weeknd to feature on Drake’s new album

Rapper Drake has confirmed that Toronto-based R&B singer Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, will feature heavily on his upcoming album, Take Care.

"He’s one of the greatest artists I’ve ever heard, and he’s on my album a lot. We really collaborated a lot on this album," Drake told Billboard.

"Not only did he inspire me to get out there and sing better on stage, he inspired me writing-wise, music-wise, just to better my product," he continued. "To hear someone with an incredible body of work is very rare. It’s very inspiring… I’m proud of him. He works real hard. He’s just an incredible person, [and has] become a really close friend to me."

Take Care, Drake’s second studio album, is scheduled for release on the rapper’s 25th birthday on October 24. Along with The Weeknd, the album will also feature rap duo 8Ball & MJG, U.K. band U.K.’s Florence and the Machine, and even music legend Stevie Wonder.

Drake works with Stevie Wonder on Take Care

Toronto-born actor/singer/rapper Drake has revealed that Motown icon Stevie Wonder not only served as a mentor on his forthcoming album, Take Care, but that he’ll appear on a total of six tracks.

"[Stevie Wonder] helped me out with a lot of the music; just came and sat with me, listened to my music, told me where I could add a couple things to make it more sonically appealing, and not only that, but we actually are writing together, which is an incredible experience," Drake told MuchMusic.

The pair surprised crowds at Toronto’s OVO Festival yesterday (August 1) when Wonder appeared onstage during Drake’s set to play a handful of his classic hits like Sir Duke, I Wish, My Cheri Amour, Ribbons In The Sky, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, and the much loved, Superstitious.

Drake’s sophomore album, Take Care, is slated for release on October 24 on Young Money Entertainment/Cash Money Records.

Drake dishes on new album’s lead single

After releasing new songs Marvin’s Room and Dreams Money Can Buy via his blog, rap sensation Drake has revealed that the lead single for sophomore LP Take Care will be called Headlines.

Produced by longtime Drake producers and collaborators Matthew Samuels and Noah Shebib, Drake confirmed the single’s title with a short tweet last Thursday (July 21) that simply read, “Headlines.”

The anticipated announcement of the single comes amidst much speculation – however, the 24-year-old artist and actor expressed disdain of single tracks to Rolling Stone: "I hate singles… With this album, I want to tell a whole story. I don’t want people to just hear a piece and judge the album on that."

Drake also confirmed Shot for Me, Free Spirit and The Real Her as three more tracks to appear on the new album. Free Spirit and The Real Her feature Rick Ross and Lil Wayne respectively.

Drake has reportedly collaborated with a motley crew of musicians on Take Care, including indie rockers Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, Abel Tesfaye of the Weeknd, and acclaimed hip-hop producer DJ Premier.

Drake sings about Trust Issues

Canadian rapper Drake has released another new song, Trust Issues, which is now available for free streaming and download, reports HitFix.

In the lead up to his new LP, Take Care, the rap star has been leaking tracks through his personal blog, October’s Very Own. Last month, he posted the album’s intro track, Dreams Money Can Buy, and earlier this month, he followed that up with the drunk-dial satire, Marvin’s Room.

"Did my own little thing using some other thing I did. You know," the star wrote cryptically yesterday morning (June 21), accompanying the post with a download link for Trust Issues.

The "other thing" becomes clearer once listening to the track. Drake samples his own hook that he recorded for DJ Khaled’s latest single I’m On One.

"All I care about is money and the city that I’m from," he sings, opening the track with the sample. The song goes on to detail Drake’s difficulty trusting women since becoming famous.

There’s no official word whether the track is a single from the new album or something meant to stand alone – but the tags on the MP3 list the album as Take Care, making it a likely bet the song will appear on the upcoming LP.
