Amazon’s Echo and Alexa division could be in trouble

Amazon’s Echo and Alexa-enabled division, ‘Worldwide Digital,’ is on pace to lose roughly $10 billion USD (roughly $13.3 billion CAD) this year. The division’s total operating loss for the first quarter of 2022 sits at $3 billion USD (about $4 billion CAD) — the highest amount any division at the tech giant lost this quarter.

With this in mind, the future of Worldwide Digital is reportedly uncertain, according to a report from Business Insider. It appears Amazon’s plan of subsidizing hardware sales by selling products and services through Echo and Alexa-enabled devices, isn’t working out how it hoped it would.

Business Insider says that its sources told it that “Alexa is a colossal failure of imagination” and that “it was a wasted opportunity,” emphasizing that there’s “no clear directive for the devices.” However, the report also mentions that Amazon is still currently committed to its Echo and Alexa devices — at least for now.

The New York Times recently reported that Amazon has plans to layoff roughly 10,000 employees. More recent reports indicate that these layoffs will start this coming Wednesday, November 22nd.

Anecdotally, I don’t know anyone that has purchased an Amazon product or service directly through an Echo device via voice controls. In fact, I’ve removed most of my Echo devices from my home and switched over to Google’s Nest/Home products since in most cases, I find them more responsive and better devices.

Disney+’s Echo to see the return of some familiar faces…once again

With a Daredevil return on the way within the MCU, show stars Charlie Cox, and Vincent D’Onofrio are set to make more MCU appearances in the upcoming Echo series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cox and D’Onofrio will return in the 2023 Disney+ Series Echo as Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively. Also co-starring in the show is Canadian actress Devery Jacobs.

However, Cox and D’Onofrio have recently made appearances in other MCU programming, with Cox making a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home and D’Onofrio returning as the Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

This will be the first time Cox and D’Onofrio star opposite each other since Daredevil, which lasted three seasons on Netflix from 2015 to 2018.

Cox also starred as Daredevil in the Marvel mini-series Defenders, which included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher, before Disney’s acquisition of Marvel.

All of those shows can be accessed on Disney+.

A Disney+ subscription costs $11.99 CAD/month or $119.99/year.

Alexa can now detect running water, appliance beeps or motion

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant will soon get a little smarter thanks to expanded sound detection capabilities and more.

Amazon detailed the changes in its monthly roundup for November, along with some other new features and details. Unfortunately, not everything in the roundup will land in Canada.

For example, Amazon shared that Alexa’s prescription refill skill is now available for Amazon Pharmacy customers, but Amazon Pharmacy isn’t in Canada. The roundup also highlights the rollout of ‘Conversation Mode’ to the Echo Show 10 in the U.S.

Alexa’s expanded sound detection features, on the other hand, are available in Canada. First up, Alexa users can set new sound detector routines for running water and appliance beeps. As an example, you could set up a routine that will have Alexa send you a notification when it hears the laundry machine beep to let you know it finished.

There are also new Ultrasound Motion Detection routines users can set up. Dubbed ‘Occupancy’ routines, people with compatible Echo devices (4th Gen Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Dot with clock) can set up their device to detect motion and trigger a routine, such as turning on the lights in a room.

Other new features include expanded preference teaching, which now includes food and sports. Plus, this can work with the new ‘Alexa, what should I eat’ that can help users find nearby restaurants or new recipes online.

Finally, Amazon revealed that its new Echo Show 15 is available for pre-order and will release on December 9th, 2021. Those interested in pre-ordering the new Echo Show can head to Amazon’s website. In Canada, the Echo Show 15 costs $329.99. You can learn more about it here.

Amazon orb-shaped Echo speakers can sense your presence now

Amazon has flipped a switch and its latest Echo and Echo Dot smart speakers (the circular models) can use ultrasound to detect if people are in a room.

The purpose of this is to help turn off lights and connected devices when a person leaves a room without any input from the user. You can disable this feature from the Alexa app, but it will be on by default for most people. It’s located under the ‘Motion’ subheading in the app. Privacy-minded individuals may also want to know that this ultrasound system uses the microphones on the speaker to receive feedback.

Inside the app, you can also use this feature to set up routines to turn on lights or play music when someone enters/exits a room. This allows you to use an Echo in place of an actual Motion sensor, which should allow for less tech-clutter around your house. Amazon’s new Echo Show devices do this with a camera, so this now means that motion-sensing is a pretty standard Echo feature.

Google also uses ultrasound on its Mini and Nest Home smart display to detect when people are nearby. The Nest Mini will display volume controls, and the Nest hub displays will alter its interface to be more easily readable when people are standing far away.

However, Google doesn’t allow users to utilize this tech to set up routines like Amazon does.

Amazon’s ‘Hey Disney’ feature adds some familiar voices to Echo devices

If you — or a little person in your life — ever wanted to ask Olaf from Frozen what the weather is today, then oh boy, are you in luck.

At a September 28th product event, Amazon announced a new partnership with Disney related to its Echo voice-activated devices.

Those who own an Amazon Echo device will soon be able to say ‘Hey Disney’ to access a series of new features, activities and character voices.

The new ‘Hey Disney’ service, which includes “original character voice recordings and audio” and “over 1,000 magical interactions” is expected to be available to purchase in 2022, though there’s no word yet on what the mouse-themed add-on will cost.

Meanwhile, in an announcement designed specifically to make ‘Disney Dads’ run upstairs in their sensible arch-supporting walking shoes to grab their fannypacks, Amazon says that all Walt Disney World Resort hotel rooms will also be equipped with ‘Hey Disney’ Echo devices.

Disney World guests can use the Echo devices in their rooms — likely docked in the newly released Mickey-themed Echo Show 5 stands — to access voice-activated hospitality services powered by Alexa’s AI software.

Everyone else can also pre-order the stands now for $24.99 USD (roughly $31.72 CAD).

And if that’s not enough Disney x Amazon collab news for you, the Seattle-based tech multinational has also apparently literally made a real-life version of Wall-E?

Amazon’s limited-edition Billie Eilish Echo Studio speaker isn’t coming to Canada

It looks like Amazon Canada is once again the “bad guy.”

Amazon has confirmed to MobileSyrup that its limited-edition Billie Eilish Echo Studio smart speaker that features the cover art for the artist’s Happier Than Ever album is not coming to Canada.

In the U.S., the smart speaker — which seems to be identical to a standard Echo Studio beyond its cover that features Eilish — is available to pre-order now and releases in October for $230 USD (roughly $291 CAD).

“I can’t wait for my cutie fans to be able to listen to my new album Happier Than Ever in spatial audio, available on Amazon Music Unlimited,” said Eilish in an Amazon press release. It’s unclear why Amazon and Eilish partnered for this speaker, but it could have something to do with the online retail giant acquiring MGM, the company behind the James Bond franchise. Eilish wrote the theme for the upcoming James Bond film No Time To Die.

The reveal of the rather strange smart speaker comes ahead of Amazon’s September 28th fall hardware event where the company is expected to reveal several new Echo and Rin devices.

One thing is for certain — if I was Amazon, “I’d never treat me this shitty.” It’s unclear if Finneas O’Connell, Eilish’s brother and creative partner, plans to release his own special edition Nest Audio.

Leona Lewis Is Worried About New Album

The British singer, who captured fans around the globe with her debut album, Spirit, doesn’t think her sophomore album, Echo, will be as successful, reports FemaleFirst.

A source stated, "Leona knows she’s going to have to work harder with ‘Echo’ to equal, never mind better, the success of ‘Spirit.’ She wouldn’t want to be a one-album wonder. She’s been heavily involved in the making of this album and there’s a detailed plan in place to make it a success."

JLS and Alexandra Burke, who were also participants on the television reality show X Factor, are also making their entrance in the music industry, and Lewis is afraid they will take her place at the top.  The source added, "The problem is that when Leona first appeared, there was no one else like her. But things are very different now. She has some serious competition and it’s preoccupying her entirely. It’s as if she can’t think of anything else."

The first single from Echo, entitled Happy, will be released in November.
