If you order the Amazon Echo Show 15 now, you’ll get it in a month or three

Amazon’s Echo Show 15, which the company unveiled at its September event, started shipping in Canada on December 9th.

The online retail giant opened pre-orders for the device in late September, and early buyers should be receiving their Echo Show any time now.

However, if you’re in the market to purchase the Echo Show now, beware that you’ll have to wait about a month to three months before the device is shipped.

The Echo Show 15 is Amazon’s biggest smart display with a 15.6-inch 1080p screen. The display can be mounted on a wall in your house in landscape or portrait orientation.

Amazon touts the device to be a central hub to be used by all family members, with widgets for calendars, weather, appointments, to-do lists and more.

It features a 5-megapixel camera that can be used for video calls, or for the device to recognize who is using it with the new Visual ID feature. This allows the Echo Show to provide tailored content. Similar to older Echo products, there is a dedicated slider to cover the camera and a button to turn off the microphone.

Apart from regular smart display features, the Echo Show can also be used to stream content on Netflix and Amazon Prime video, all in full HD.

The Echo Show 15 costs $329.99 and is available to order from Amazon today. Expect the device to be shipped in a month to three months.

Alexa can now detect running water, appliance beeps or motion

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant will soon get a little smarter thanks to expanded sound detection capabilities and more.

Amazon detailed the changes in its monthly roundup for November, along with some other new features and details. Unfortunately, not everything in the roundup will land in Canada.

For example, Amazon shared that Alexa’s prescription refill skill is now available for Amazon Pharmacy customers, but Amazon Pharmacy isn’t in Canada. The roundup also highlights the rollout of ‘Conversation Mode’ to the Echo Show 10 in the U.S.

Alexa’s expanded sound detection features, on the other hand, are available in Canada. First up, Alexa users can set new sound detector routines for running water and appliance beeps. As an example, you could set up a routine that will have Alexa send you a notification when it hears the laundry machine beep to let you know it finished.

There are also new Ultrasound Motion Detection routines users can set up. Dubbed ‘Occupancy’ routines, people with compatible Echo devices (4th Gen Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Dot with clock) can set up their device to detect motion and trigger a routine, such as turning on the lights in a room.

Other new features include expanded preference teaching, which now includes food and sports. Plus, this can work with the new ‘Alexa, what should I eat’ that can help users find nearby restaurants or new recipes online.

Finally, Amazon revealed that its new Echo Show 15 is available for pre-order and will release on December 9th, 2021. Those interested in pre-ordering the new Echo Show can head to Amazon’s website. In Canada, the Echo Show 15 costs $329.99. You can learn more about it here.

Amazon has a new giant smart display that you can wall-mount

Amongst the many new Amazon hardware announcements, the company also revealed its biggest smart display yet, the Echo show 15.

This giant display was touted on stage as being a good family hub and a kitchen TV. Beyond being able to be well-mounted, its main gimmick is that it also has a new software widget feature. This allows users to write digital sticky notes, check the weather at a glance and other valuable tools.

Notably, the shared calendar on the device is likely quite useful for families. I’ll also say that I use my smart displays more when they’re moved up to bar height or shoulder height, so I think that the fact that this can be wall-mounted is a really smart call.

The smart display has a 15.6-inch screen, but Amazon hasn’t shared what the PPI is yet, but I’d assume it will be above 1080p, which should be alright for a device of this size.

The device also has a webcam in its frame, which looks suspiciously like a Facebook Portal, that can recognize who’s using it and tailer what it’s showing to them. This replicates Amazon’s existing voice recognition services that it uses on its other smart displays but allows it to use it without having the user talk. While this makes sense since the sizeable 15-inch tablet is very touchable, it’s also likely a privacy concern for some.

The device also has Amazon’s new AZ2 processor, so it should be the fastest smart display the company has so far. This sounds like a meaningless spec on smart displays, but anyone using an older laggy smart display or in-car screen will know that lag can create a frustrating experience.

The device is listed for $249 USD (roughly, 349 CAD). It’s unclear if this device is launching in Canada.

More to come…
