Ecobee releases two new smart thermostats with a classic glass face look

A recent leak suggested that Ecobee might be working on two new smart thermostats. Now the Toronto-based company has officially announced its new Smart Thermostat Premium and Smart Thermostat Enhanced.

“Today’s introduction of Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced pushes the boundaries of the category to improve comfort, home health, and security, while continuing to deliver the energy saving features synonymous with ecobee.” reads the company’s press release.

Both of the new devices feature radar, which Ecobee says is its most advanced sensor technology to date, along with improved occupancy and motion detection and a 50 percent larger display that boasts Ecobee’s new UI (user interface). The Smart Thermostat Premium and Enhanced have been outfitted with a “stunning glass face and smooth waterfall edges” for a classic look and feel, whereas the updated radar can now detect motion from further away. The new radar, unlike an infrared sensor, is hidden inside the thermostat, providing a clean look for the device on your wall.

Both the new devices can be controlled with your Apple Watch or by integrating them with Apple Homekit+. What makes the Premium version better, however, is that it now shows the indoor air quality carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, and relative humidity with alerts to warn you if air quality inside your house is poor. The Thermostat will also share tips like ‘open a window’ to improve indoor air quality.

“Smart Thermostat Premium and Smart Thermostat Enhanced are Ecobee’s first products to be paper manual-free with a mobile-only approach to installation,” reads the Toronto-based company’s news release.

Both new smart thermostats are now available to order in Canada via Ecobee’s website. Follow the links to check out the Smart Thermostat Premium and Smart Thermostat Enhanced, available for $329.99 and $239.99, respectively.

Two new Ecobee smart thermostats leaks online

Toronto-based Ecobee is rumoured to be releasing two new smart thermostats, according to ZatsNotFunny.

The two new smart thermostats, the ‘Ecobee Enhanced’ and the ‘Ecobee Premium,’ leaked through a Reddit thread and a Canadian Tire listing, respectively.

The Ecobee Premium appears to be a replacement for the current Smart Thermostat, whereas Ecobee Enhanced seems to be replacing the current Ecobee 3 lite.

According to the report, the Smart Thermostat Premium will include a new built-in air quality sensor that will monitor the air quality inside your house and provide advice on how to enhance air quality. The new thermostat is expected to retain both Siri and Alexa voice assistants and sport a “vibrant display with a cinematic interface.”

The Ecobee Enhanced, on the other hand, is also expected to feature a new “vibrant display with a cinematic interface” alongside a more compact, inverted installation plate.

While none of the leaks mention a tentative release date, considering that the whole product listing made it to Canadian Tire’s website, it would be wise to think that the new thermostats would be released in the near future.

The Hue lights hook up to the user’s mobile phone via the Hue app or can be controlled via voice commands.

Philips Hue Lights provide light over a spectrum of warm and cool shades with a brightness of 800 lumens. On top of that, 16 million colour tones can be accessed and set to create a mood or aesthetic within the household. Toronto-based smart home company Ecobee to be acquired by U.S.-based Generac

Toronto-based smart home device company Ecobee will be acquired by U.S.-based Generac Holdings for $770 million USD (roughly $952 million CAD), as first reported by BetaKit.

Generac will reportedly pay $200 million (about $245 million CAD) in cash and $450 million (roughly $556 million CAD) in common stock to Ecobee’s equity holders. Generac Holdings is known for creating home generators.

Ecobee, founded in 2007, is best known for its several smart home thermostats, though recently, the company released a smart home camera. It also sells an Alexa and Siri-enabled version of its SmartThermostat. For Apple-powered Siri voice activation, a HomePod mini is required.

According to BetaKit, Ecobee says its devices are used in more than two million homes across North America, and the company currently has over 500 employees globally.

“Generac’s evolution into an energy technology solutions company creates many opportunities to integrate our ecobee products with their residential device offerings, enabling direct monitoring and control of a significant portion of the home’s electrical load,” said Stuart Lombard, founder and chief executive officer of ecobee, in a press release.

In a smart home industry full of massive players like Google, Amazon and Apple, Ecobee remained one of the few independent hardware manufacturers in the space. It’s currently unclear how this acquisition will affect Ecobee moving forward.

Toronto-based Ecobee’s Smart Thermostat finally gets Siri access

After being shown off at Apple’s WWDC this past summer, Toronto-based Ecobee has finally launched its long-awaited Siri update for its SmartThermostat’s with voice control.

While Ecobee is the first company to take advantage of this new feature, it ideally means that more devices will start releasing that take advantage of Siri. The only catch is that you need a HomePod mini on the same network to process the requests.

This means that adding Siri to random smart home objects is possible, but it’s a lot more expensive and convoluted than when a device features Alexa or Google Assistant integration. Still, if you already have this particular smart thermostat and a HomePod mini, this is a welcome update.

The Verge says that the SmartThermostat’s Siri integration works great and is the same as having a Siri-capable device like a HomePod. The publication also notes that it’s hilarious to be able to AirPlay music through the tinny thermostat speaker.

The update is rolling out over the next two weeks, according to Ecobee. The company’s SmartThermostart with voice control costs $299 right now, while the HomePod mini costs $129.
