Elton is top of the pops after 20 years

(AFP) – Flamboyant British pop icon Elton John on Sunday scored his first number one album in his home country for over 20 years, his seventh in total.

The bespectacled pianist claimed the official top spot with "Good Morning To The Night", a collaboration with Australian duo Pnau.

The antipodean pair have reworked John’s early 1970s hits as dance anthems, giving him his first chart-topper since releasing the "Very Best of Elton John" in 1990.

The knighted star, who is 65, recently released a book detailing his personal connection to AIDS and his fight against the disease through his Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Elton John to be honoured in Poland

Sir Elton John will be honored in Poland for his role in the collapse of Communism.

The singer will be presented with the Medal of Gratitude when he performs in the town of Sopot on Sunday (08.07.12) for risking arrest in 1984 when he publicly praised trade union leader Lech Walesa during a concert in the country.

Walesa went on to become president in 1990 leading the revolution to change the country from a Communist state to a democratic one and he will personally present the honor to Elton when he performs in the seaside town.

Magdalena Charkin-Jaszcza, of the European Solidarity Centre (ESC) in Gdansk, explained: "We award this to foreigners who helped Poland during its long struggle for freedom.

"Elton John came here and gave us the support we needed when we were living in a police state where people were getting beaten up and killed like in George Orwell’s [dystopian novel] ‘1984’."

Damian Domski, 32, a Polish immigrant who is a worker at Age UK and a gay rights activist, put forward the ‘Rocket Man’ hitmaker as a worthy recipient of the accolade.

He said: "If I meet Sir Elton on Sunday all I want to do is shake his hand and say thanks.

"He used his fame and influence at a very important moment for us in Poland. Solidarity activists were effectively being criminalized and he renewed their courage to keep going."

Elton John ‘doing extremely well’

Sir Elton John is "doing extremely well" from a respiratory infection which resulted in him being admitted to hospital.

His civil partner David Furnish said that the father of their son Zachary is on the mend after being taken ill last week (23.05.12).

Speaking at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards David thanked the audience for their concern.

He said: "Thank you for your well wishes," he said. "He’s doing incredibly well and recovering."

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer cancelled three Las Vegas performances after being admitted to Los Angeles Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre for a series of tests but went home the same day.

David handed out an award with actress Naomi Watts to fashion designer Donatella Versace at the event.

The 65-year-old musician told TMZ.com: "It feels strange not to be able to perform these ‘Million Dollar Piano’ concerts at the Colosseum.

"I love performing the show and I will be thrilled when we return to the Colosseum in October to complete the 11 concerts.

"All I can say to the fans is ‘sorry I can’t be with you."

Elton John hosptialised with ‘serious respiratory infection’

Sir Elton John has been hospitalised with a "serious respiratory infection."

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles in the early hours of yesterday morning (23.05.12)

He has subsequently undergone tests and doctors have told him he cannot perform for seven days, meaning he will have to cancel four concerts of his ‘Million Dollar Piano’ residency at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace scheduled for the weekend.

Elton was told by medics he needs "complete rest and antibiotic treatment to prevent damage."

The 65-year-old musician – who has a 17-month-old son Zachary with his husband David Furnish – is now thought to have left hospital and is resting at home.

The singer told TMZ.com: "It feels strange not to be able to perform these ‘Million Dollar Piano’ concerts at the Colosseum.

"I love performing the show and I will be thrilled when we return to the Colosseum in October to complete the 11 concerts.

"All I can say to the fans is ‘sorry I can’t be with you."

Elton was previously forced to cancel two concerts in February, after he came down with food poisoning.

In October 2011, Elton celebrated performing his 3000th show in Las Vegas, after which he celebrated with the audience and a large cake with ‘EJ3K’ written on it.

The star’s ‘Million Dollar Piano’ shows are named after the piano he uses, which was especially built for him by manufacturer Yamaha over four years and cost a reported $1 million to produce.

Elton John and David Furnish planning second child

Sir Elton John and David Furnish are hoping to father a second child this summer.

David, 49, has revealed he and the ‘Rocket Man’ hitmaker would like to give one-year-old son Zachary a little brother or sister, and are thinking about enlisting the help of a surrogate once more.

He said: "I would like Zachary to have a sibling. I think he would be better with a sibling than on his own. It’s something we talk about all the time. But in terms of when, where and how, nothing’s decided yet.

"I think we are going to wait till this summer. Our life is always like a treadmill with Elton constantly working and touring. But when we go away to our house in France, that’s when we sit back and go [big exhalation] okay, how is this working, how are you feeling?"

The couple – who met in 1993 and became civil partners in 2005 – both donated sperm the first time around so they don’t know which one is the father, and plan to do the same again.

Explaining the process, he told the London Evening Standard newspaper: "We could go back to the same egg donor, so biologically there would certainly be a connection between brother and brother or brother and sister."

However, they may need to use a new surrogate mother because their previous one, "has been a surrogate before but has a life of her own and her own family.

"It’s a big commitment to make, nine months of their life that doesn’t just affect them but their children, their husband, their partner. If we found a surrogate who is half as beautiful as our first, we would be very lucky."

Elton John selling Hollywood homes

Sir Elton John and David Furnish are selling their Hollywood apartments.

The couple – who have 15-month-old son Zachary – own two homes in the Sierra Towers building Los Angeles and are selling them for a total price of $5.1 million after purchasing a $7.7 million home in Beverly Hills.

One of the apartments previously featured in Architectural Digest and covers 1,831 square feet and is up for sale at $3.5 million.

The second property adjoins the first but covers 1,151 square feet, with one bedroom and one bathroom.

A potential buyer could splurge on both and have them turned into a luxurious penthouse apartment in the building – where Cher and Joan Collins also have homes – and enjoy its impressive facilities, which include exercise room, rooftop swimming pool, sauna, doorman, valet parking and concierge services.

Elton and David’s new child-friendly home was built in 1966 and boasts three bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a staff bedroom and bathroom, pool, a gym, floor-to-ceiling windows and white-oak flooring.

The move could be because the couple are reportedly planning to have another child after welcoming Zachary via a surrogate on Christmas Day 2010.

A source said: "The wheels are in motion. David and Elton have never hidden their desire to extend their family, and believe the time is right for another child.

"By the end of this year, or the beginning of next year, there will be a fourth member of the John-Furnish clan.

"They are incredibly excited and loving every minute of parenthood."

Speaking previously, David revealed they did not think about which of the pair – who both "contributed" to their child’s conception – was the father.

He said: "For the time being we don’t have a clue who the biological father is. We look at him every day and at the moment he has Elton’s nose and my hands.

"Neither of us care. He’s our child. The important thing is that he’s healthy and happy and loved."

Elton John planning second child?

Sir Elton John is reportedly planning to have another baby.

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer and his partner David Furnish – who welcomed son Zachary by a surrogate on Christmas Day 2010 – are apparently hoping to give him a little brother or sister by the end of the year.

A source told the Daily Mirror: "The wheels are in motion. David and Elton have never hidden their desire to extend their family, and believe the time is right for another child.

"By the end of this year, or the beginning of next year, there will be a fourth member of the John-Furnish clan.

"They are incredibly excited and loving every minute of parenthood."

Despite having both "contributed" to the process of Zach’s conception, the couple has never found out which one of them is the biological father.

David previously told OK! magazine: "For the time being we don’t have a clue who the biological father is. We look at him every day and at the moment he has Elton’s nose and my hands.

"Neither of us care. He’s our child. The important thing is that he’s healthy and happy and loved."

But according to the Daily Mirror, they now plan to change all that to ensure the second child is fathered by the one who missed out last time.

A spokesman for Elton refused to comment.

Elton John prepares The Diving Board

Sir Elton John claims his new record is "the most exciting" he has made in a "long, long time."

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer has gone back to basics with ‘The Diving Board’, recording it with just piano, bass and drums backing his voice at the suggestion of producer T Bone Burnett.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: "It was T Bone’s idea to get back with piano, bass and drums. He said, ‘Let’s start with that.’"

Although he was unsure about whether he wanted to go back into the studio so soon after his last album, 2010’s ‘The Union’ with Leon Russell – as soon as he was there, Elton worked prolifically, writing twelve songs in two days and recording them in another four.

He added: "I was due to go back into the studio, but I didn’t know whether I wanted to go back in so quickly.

"But I said, ‘I’ll go into the studio and if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t matter. [And it turned out the] quickest record I’ve ever made.

"As I said with ‘The Union’, I had to go back to go forward, and it’s the same with this record."

Elton was backed on the record by Raphael Saadiq on bass, Jay Bellerose – who played on ‘The Union’ – on drums and guitarist Doyle Bramhall on two tracks.

Elton John had to cancel two concerts because of food poisoning

Sir Elton John cancelled two concerts this weekend after he came down with food poisoning.

The ‘Rocket Man’ singer had been due to play at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas on Friday (17.02.12) and Saturday (18.02.12) as part of his Million Dollar Piano residence, but pulled out after something he ate left him too ill to sing.

A spokesperson for the star told website TMZ he is feeling "much better now" and will be ready for his next concert later this week, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Elton was performing in Las Vegas the Saturday before (11.02.12) when he heard about the death of Whitney Houston – who was found passed away in a hotel in Los Angeles ahead of the Grammy Awards – and dedicated his track ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ to her.

Addressing the crowd that night he said: "This is a sad day today, most of you must know by now the news of Whitney Houston passing away.

"About six years ago I was here in Vegas with some friends and we spent the whole afternoon on YouTube looking at Whitney’s work from a long time ago, and you forget – with all the troubles she went through – how brilliant, she was.

"So, my dearest, gorgeous, lovely angel, we want to do this song for you. Thank you for giving us your talent and one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard in my life."
