Rumor: NHL-ready arena development to be announced on Monday.

Although the National Hockey League has only just recently added the Seattle Kraken to their ever growing number of member teams and although the NHL finally finds itself balanced with 32 teams across the league, the rumors of NHL expansion continue to persist.

The latest on that front comes to us courtesy of former NHL goaltender turned NHL insider Kevin Weekes, and his report is a spicy one. Weekes is reporting that an arena development project, one large enough to house a hockey team, is set to be announced on Monday.

What makes this report from Weekes even more interesting though is the market involved in this rumor, one that has repeatedly been one of two markets in the United States heavily rumored to be potential NHL destinations. According to Weekes the market in question is that of the state of Georgia, with the city of Atlanta having been a rumored destination for the NHL almost since the moment the Atlanta Thrashers were relocated to Winnipeg.

Weekes even goes to ask “If you build it, will they come ?” clearly hinting at the possibility of NHL expansion here in the future. It’s still too early to say anything definitive about this as-of-yet to be announced project, but there’s a little smoke here at the very least.

Could this be the location of the next NHL franchise? Hockey fans in Quebec City, Quebec or Houston, Texas might not be too happy at the thought of that possibility.

Some Alberta, B.C. customers getting $70/mo 1Gbps internet from Telus

If you live in Alberta or B.C., you might have some luck getting a pretty decent Telus internet deal.

According to a post on RedFlagDeals (RFD) from ‘greghuston,’ those who live in neighbourhoods getting access to Telus’ ‘PureFibre’ internet might be able to get a 1Gbps plan for $70/month on a two-year term.

In the post, greghuston explains that they got Telus’ 1Gbps PureFibre internet, equipment, a $150 bill credit and unlimited data all for $70/mo plus tax. They go on to note that the deal appears to be only available for new customers and that they got it via a special deal from a rep, not directly through Telus.

Other RFD users chimed in to note that it’s common to get special offers from third-party reps since Telus has several companies working on expanding PureFibre.

Greghuston later notes that their first statement from Telus included a $200 credit and had the correct $70/mo price.

Overall, it definitely sounds like there’s a strong ‘your mileage may vary’ element here, but anyone lucky enough to get an offer like this may want to take it. Looking at Telus’ website right now, there’s an offer for PureFibre 1Gbps internet starting at $89/mo (including a $10 discount for being a Telus or Koodo mobility customer) and a $50 bill credit for online orders. $70/mo with a $200 bill credit is quite a bit better.

You can check out the RFD thread here for more information. Alternatively, you can view Telus’ website here.

Rogers expands 5G to Dartmouth and Bedford, Nova Scotia

Toronto-based national telecom company Rogers announced it expanded 5G coverage to more areas in Nova Scotia.

In an email release, the carrier said it expanded 5G in Dartmouth and Bedford, Nova Scotia. The expansion brings Rogers’ 5G to a total of 16 communities across the Atlantic region, including Halifax, Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton, all part of a broader series of investments in Canada’s east coast.

Along with the 5G improvement, Rogers “enhanced” wireless networks across 32 communities in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island over the last 20 months.

Rogers also boasted about its investment in wireline network upgrades, which the company says helped improve connections across 71 communities in Atlantic Canada.

“We’re proud to enhance connectivity in cities, towns, and rural communities across Atlantic Canada, especially during the pandemic when world-class connections have played a critical role in people’s lives,” said Matt MacLellan, president of the Atlantic region at Rogers.

Rogers says its ongoing investments have enabled enhanced connectivity to over 1,000 Canadian communities and will expedite plans to bring enhanced connectivity to an additional 750 communities by the end of 2021.

Bell expanding fibre internet access to 10,000 more locations in Oshawa, Ontario

Bell has announced an expansion of fibre internet service to homes and businesses in urban and rural areas of Oshawa, Ontario.

In a news release, the Montreal-based national telecom company said that the expansion was part of its “accelerated capital investment in national next-generation network infrastructure.”

According to Bell, its fibre internet now reaches more than 44,000 Oshawa locations, and the expansion will increase that an additional 10,000 by the end of 2021.

“Bridging the digital divide is a priority for Bell as we advance how Canadians connect with each other and the world. We’re proud to bring our pure fibre connections and world-leading Internet and TV services to households and commercial locations in Oshawa as part of this historic network acceleration program,” said Rizwan Jamal, Bell’s president of residential and small business.

Bell says that its $100 million investment to bring direct fibre network connections to approximately 60,000 homes and businesses in Oshawa is now close to completion. Its fibre network will provide access to internet download speeds of up to 1.5Gbps and Bell services like Fibe TV.

Additionally, the company notes that it fully funded the expansion program.

Bell’s accelerated capital investment will see $1.7 billion in capital invested over the next two years to accelerate the rollout of broadband fibre. The company says this investment comes alongside its roughly $4 billion annual broadband investment.
