Facebook Gaming announces co-streaming feature

Facebook is offering a co-streaming option with Facebook Gaming.

Facebook Gaming creators can search and tag up to three other gaming creators.  The co-streaming experience will start when other creators tag you back and you will see a confirmation green check icon next to the player’s name.

“Based on community feedback, we heard that co-streaming would greatly improve the creator streaming experience. With co-streaming, creators can stream with one another concurrently, allowing viewers to navigate easily between the co-streams to watch from different perspectives,” according to the Facebook press release.

Twitch also has a similar feature called ‘Squad Stream,‘ but that’s only available to Twitch Partners, whereas Facebook co-streaming is available for everyone.

Facebook says outage wasn’t malicious, blames a ‘faulty configuration change’

Facebook says a “faulty configuration change” is to blame for a seven-hour global outage across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp that grounded much of the internet to a halt yesterday.

The update came from Santosh Janardhan, Facebook’s vice-president of infrastructure, in a post on the social media platform’s engineering blog:

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.”

The blog post emphasized that there was “no malicious activity behind this outage” and “no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.”

This assurance comes in response to the many theories and conspiracies circulating online — on the few remaining social media platforms that survived the ‘snap’ — during the outage, all speculating about what the cause could be.

Jane Lytvynenko, a researcher and freelance reporter specializing in tracking online disinformation, shared some common scams making the rounds:

The outage started at roughly 11:30am ET/8:30am PT on September 4th, and is estimated to have affected tens of thousands of users.

According to iMore, the outage had folks flocking onto Twitter in record numbers to communicate and commiserate, much to the platform’s delight.

The unprecedented traffic then, of course, broke Twitter, resulting in some users being unable to view replies or DMs.

Jennifer Lawrence insists she does wash hands after bathroom joke backfired

Jennifer Lawrence has insisted she does wash her hands when using the toilet.

The ‘Hunger Games’ star, who left the world stunned when she shared her lack of personal hygiene, has been forced to set the record straight about how she abolishes the germs after relieving herself.

Taking to her Facebook account, the 25-year-old beauty poked fun at herself by posting a video of her flushing the chain and dousing her hands with water in her hotel room.

She accompanied the hilarious clip with the caption: ”Of course I wash my hands after going to the bathroom! (I can’t believe I’ve put myself in a situation where I even have to say that.) Anyway with all the rumours I’ve ever heard about myself this is the one I really had to put to rest.”

The blonde actress hit the headlines a few weeks ago when she shared her bathroom habits during a Q&A with her co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson.

She said at the time: ”I don’t wash my hands after I go to the bathroom.”

Liam, 25, added with a shudder: ”And then she likes to put her hands over your face.”

And the revelations didn’t stop there as she admitted also opts to urinate in bathroom basins when she’s out with her pals so she doesn’t have to wait around to use the toilet.

She said with confidence: ”I’ve peed in some sinks. When two girls go into a bathroom, someone’s gotta take sink. I actually like taking a sink. One could wait, but if the one waiting is me, she’s going to the sink.”

Ryan Reynolds joins Facebook and Instagram

Ryan Reynolds has joined Facebook and Instagram.

The 38-year-old actor – who joined Twitter back in November – has now set up official accounts on the other two social networking sites, joking he is ”fashionably 12 years late” in creating a Facebook page.

In his first post on the account – which has already racked up more than 670,000 fans – he posted a snap of himself as a teenager on the set of teen drama ‘Fifteen’, alongside which he wrote: ”Nice to be on Facebook. It’s always good to be fashionably 12 years late.”

The ‘Green Lantern’ star – who has four-month-old daughter James with his wife, 27-year-old ‘Gossip Girl’ actress Blake Lively – has also shared his first snap on his Instagram account.

Posting a still from his new Marvel film ‘Deadpool’, in which he is in mid-air, he wrote: ”Stuck the landing. With my mouth.”

However, Ryan’s 100,000 person following on the site is modest compared to Blake, who has racked up 2.7 million followers since joining Instagram in July last year.

And fans will be hoping to see more of the hunk’s trademark wit on his new accounts, having joked about his mother on Twitter on Mother’s Day (05.10.15) with a quirky post about her knowledge of Israeli self defence.

He quipped: ”Got pretty lucky in the Mom Lottery. This amazing lady KNOWS how to raise 4 boys. She also knows advanced krav maga (sic).”

Los Angeles home to most social airport

Serving 60 million passengers a year, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has topped a new Facebook list as the “most social airport” in the world. Facebook named LAX as the most popular airport people “checked into” between August and November this year.

Ok with announcing their travel plans to online friends, American passengers are leading the “checking in” trend – the Facebook process which lets their friends know where they are in the world.

Twenty of Facebook’s 25 “most social airports” are located in the U.S., and include the busiest airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, in second place, followed by Chicago O’Hare, San Francisco International Airport, and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Also making it into the top 20 are London Heathrow Airport, Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

According to LAX, its Facebook and Twitter pages provide passengers and the general public with information on flight delays, weather conditions, travel tips, construction news, and acts as a platform for comments and questions.

Many airports offer online services to passengers, who have quickly adopted the new technologies to facilitate travel from city to city.

Burberry fragrance debuts via Facebook

Luxury brand Burberry is readying to launch its newest fragrance Burberry Body at the end of the month and in an unusual viral twist, exclusive samples will be available only to Facebook users, reports Basenotes.net.

Until the fragrance officially launches in stores, the 155-year-old brand will send samples of the anticipated Burberry Body – featuring notes of freesia, green absinthe, peach, rose, iris, sandalwood, Cashmerean musk, amber and vanilla – to fans of their Facebook page. Fan-sourced Michael Jackson video debuts tomorrow

Last March, Sony Music and the estate of Michael Jackson asked fans around the world to contribute to the video for Behind the Mask, a song from his posthumous album, Michael.

The global online casting call asked fans to shoot, upload and submit their own unique performances for inclusion in the video, eliciting a response from 103 countries. Tomorrow, on June 14th, the fan-sourced video for Behind the Mask will be unveiled on Facebook.

For the project, the social networking website was loaded with simple tools that defined different roles. Users selected an action like playing an instrument, singing a lyric, acting out a crowd reaction or demonstrating a classic MJ dance move. Contributors were able to shoot their move right on the website or with their web cam and upload the clip at the precise time it occurred in the video.

“This has been the most exciting and fun project I think I’ve ever been involved in,” said director Dennis Liu. “It’s been such a privilege, and was incredibly moving to see so many people from all over the world join as one, their creative voices, dance and musical talents bound together by Michael Jackson’s spirit and incomparable artistry.

“We received submissions from the Sahara Desert to Venice Beach, from mountaintops to suburban backyards, with some shots featuring well over one hundred people apiece. All who participated delivered brilliantly.”

Submissions were carefully edited down by the director to the best 1600 submissions (including 50 kids and 36 animals).

Underage users a problem for Facebook

The popularity of social networking sites makes them attractive to children, but it’s also providing them with a new platform for bullying behavior, reports Canada.com.

Facebook’s terms of service require that all users be over the age of 13, but there are concerns that many parents are complicit in allowing their younger children to create accounts.

According to a study by Consumer Reports, 7.5 million of the 20 million U.S. Facebook users are actually under the age of 13 – and five million of these are under the age of ten.

The same study found that at least five million American households have been the victim of some form of abuse through Facebook, including identity theft, virus infections and bullying.

The problem has become so bad in France that education ombudsman Monique Sassier spoke out, reminding parents to stop young children from using the site and urging the minister to sign an agreement with the site to automatically terminate the accounts of underage users, reports Ouest-France.

According to Facebook’s terms of service, they will delete accounts that violate the rules. However, underage children typically register a false birthdate in order to get around the restriction, making them hard to detect.
