Kelly Clarkson speaks out about leaked tracks

First-season American Idol winner, U.S. pop singer Kelly Clarkson has made a statement to reassure fans that recently-leaked online tracks are just demo recordings, and not the “real deal,” reports Starpulse.

The Grammy-winning Clarkson, 29, insists the snippets are demos and have nothing to do with her fifth album, which is due out shortly.

“I just heard another demo of mine leaked,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I don’t know how or who is doing it but they’re demos and not the real deal. I record a ton of songs I write and songs that other people write when I’m making an album."

She apologized to her fans for the misunderstanding, “Sorry for the confusion. I promise y’all I’m just as anxious to get my CD out!

“The recording is all done and now we’re finishing up with mixing the record and getting ready to release the single in July.”

In the first week of its 2009 release, Clarkson’s single My Life Would Suck Without You broke the record for the largest leap to the top, advancing from number 97 to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Social networking and children

A survey led by the European Commission, revealed that 38 percent of 9 to 12-year-olds use social networking sites, with one in five of the age group having a profile on Facebook, even though the network sets a minimum age of 13 to join.

Researchers who carried out the EU Kids Online survey of 25,000 young people across Europe say it shows that age restrictions are only partially effective and that a growing number of children are taking online risks.

A quarter of children on social networking sites have their profile set to ‘public.’ One fifth of children whose profile is public display their address and/or phone number, twice as many as for those with private profiles.

The findings raise the possibility that removing age restrictions from social network sites might be the most effective way of improving online safety as the rules have the consequence of driving kids’ social networking underground.

Elisabeth Staksrud, from the University of Oslo and one of the report’s authors comments that: "since children often lie about their age to join ‘forbidden’ sites it would be more practical to identify younger users and to target them with easy-to-use protective measures."

Among other findings, the survey shows that almost one in six 9 to 12-year-olds, and one in three 13 to 16-year-olds, has 100 or more online contacts. Around a quarter of social network users communicate online with people who have no connection to their offline lives.

Facebook causes teenage depression?

Social networking sites such as Facebook may cause depression in vulnerable teenagers who feel shunned, and parents should carefully monitor their child’s use of the website, according to new guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and reported by the Daily Mail.

According to the new AAP publication, online harassment "can cause profound psycho-social outcomes" and the effects of being shut-out by peers online may actually be more pronounced than in real life, especially without the context provided by body language and facial expressions.

Social networking sites can also "interfere with homework, sleep and physical activity," warns lead researcher Dr Gwenn O’Keeffe.

"Parents need to understand these technologies so they can relate to their children’s online world – and comfortably parent in that world."

According to a separate study by Dr. Megan Moreno, an adolescent medicine specialist at the University of Wisconsin, Facebook may actually help to promote self-esteem and enhance social connections among some children, even as it can cause problems for teens who are prone to depression.

Children under 13 not allowed on Facebook

Many parents give their children permission to have a Facebook account, however the site regulations are clear: children under 13 are prohibited from opening an account.

Social network executives have decided to take drastic measures, and are now deleting about 20,000 accounts daily, reports the Daily Telegraph, a total of 7 million over the course of one year.

"There are people who lie,” said Mozelle Thompson, Facebook’s chief privacy advisor. “There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook],” he told Australia’s Federal Parliament’s cyber-safety committee: Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage."

While the social networking site had mechanisms to detect liars, Mr Thompson said: "It’s not perfect".

While these numbers may seem impressive, keep in mind the social network has 600 million members worldwide.

So if your child is under 13, don’t be surprised if their Facebook profile suddenly disappears – the company has removed it.

Beach House Maldives celebrates with Facebook contest

To celebrate its first year anniversary as a Waldorf Astoria Resort, Beach House Maldives is holding a contest on Facebook, calling upon contestants’ imagination and enthusiasm to recreate a touch of the paradise island.

Possible link between social networking and eating disorders

Teenage girls who spend hours on the social networking website Facebook may be at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder, according to a new study from the University of Haifa in Israel, reports the DailyMail.

Researchers at the university surveyed 248 girls between the ages of 12 to 19, asking them about their television and Internet habits, as well as their self-image and general outlook on eating.

The results showed that the more time adolescents spent on Facebook, the more likely they were to develop warning signs of an eating disorder, hold a negative view towards eating, or feel the need to be on a strict diet.

Viewing websites dedicated to fashion or music, or watching television shows such as Gossip Girl also seemed to increase the likelihood of an eating disorder.

Rather than banning girls from viewing these websites and television shows – bans and limits caused the girls to feel less empowered – parents were best able to mitigate the effects simply by being engaged and informed about their daughters’ online life. The girls felt most empowered when their parents knew and discussed what was happening when their daughters were online.

Officials from Facebook, however, were doubtful of the results. "People spend hours with their friends every day in the real world, so we’re not convinced spending time with them on Facebook makes them any more likely to have an eating disorder, particularly when the research in question has a sample size of just 248," said a spokesperson from the social networking website.

Free Facebook access on major U.S. airlines

February is Facebook month at seven U.S. airlines offering free access to the social networking giant in order to encourage the inflight use of their wi-fi services.

This freebie is valid on North American flights for Virgin America, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, AirTran, US Airways and Alaska Airlines.

If you want to access any other websites, it’ll cost extra, with prices ranging from $4.95 for a short flight to $12.95 for a long one, depending on the packages offered by various carriers, each with their own pricing for Internet connection. Based on all the other extras the airlines charge, what’s one more?

The purpose of the promotion is to increase the use of the Web on flights, which is currently only used by 10 percent of passengers. The promotional deal is available through Gogo Inflight Internet, which currently serves 1,1100 commercial aircraft flying around 3,800 flights a day, as well as 5,000 private planes.

The idea is similar to free cable preview weekends: first look for free. Gogo hopes that by offering flyers free Facebook, they’ll become accustomed to using the Internet on flights.

New moms use Facebook to create local breast milk banks

An online initiative to share breast milk is gaining popularity, despite warnings from pediatricians and the federal government. Eats on Feets, a Facebook program started by Montreal resident, Emma Kwasnica, already has dozens of regional sites across Canada, each with 100 to 280 participants.

Health Canada issued a warning against the use of such unregulated breast milk-sharing programs. "There is a potential risk that the milk may be contaminated with viruses such as HIV or bacteria, which can cause food poisoning." The milk can also transmit traces of any prescription or non-prescription drugs the mothers may be taking.

But Kwasnica has defended the safety of her program, arguing that the small, local nature of these milk-sharing groups helps to protect against these dangers.“You can meet this woman for a coffee and see her healthy baby on her hip. The idea is if it’s good enough for her to feed her baby and she’s healthy and her baby’s healthy and you’ve got her bloodwork … you’ll feel OK about using her milk,” she said to Canada.com.

The Canadian Pediatric Society is urging provinces to open human milk banks, suggesting these facilities could save the lives of premature babies whose mothers can’t lactate immediately.

Despite Health Canada’s acknowledgement that breastfeeding is internationally recognized as the best way to feed infants, Canada has only one official breast milk bank, located at BC Women’s Hospital.
