iPhone 14, 14 Pro having iMessage, FaceTime issues after set up

Apple warned that those setting up new iPhone 14 or 14 Pro devices may have issues setting up iMessage and FaceTime.

Per an Apple support document spotted by 9to5Mac:

“iMessage and FaceTime might not complete activation on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. Update to the latest version of iOS to address the issue.”

Apple goes on to explain that after setting up a new iPhone 14 or 14 Pro, some people may not receive iMessages or FaceTime calls, conversations in messages might show up as two separate threads, and recipients might see your messages coming from the wrong account (such as your email address if you had selected your phone number).

Oh, and most devastating of all: some people might see a green message bubble instead of a blue one. An unfortunate side effect of relying on iMessage for high-quality texting is that when iMessage breaks, you end up falling back to SMS (the green bubbles), a years-old standard that has not kept up with modern messaging expectations. Tim Cook seems to think the solution to green bubble problems is buying an iPhone, but apparently, that doesn’t include the newest iPhones.

Before you panic over having to send a green bubble like the Android plebs, you should know that Apple has fixed the problem with iOS version 16.0.1, which dropped yesterday. iOS 16.0.1 includes a few bug fixes for the new iPhones, including an issue photos may appear soft when zooming in landscape.

The update should fix iMessage and FaceTime activation issues, getting you back into the blue bubble crew. Most iPhones should prompt you to install the new software during setup, but if that doesn’t happen, you can download the update afterwards by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

If you still have issues after updating, Apple suggests making sure your iPhone is connected to a cellular network and then heading into Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and selecting the phone number you want to use with the Messages app.

Here’s how to take/make FaceTime calls on macOS Monterey

If you’re running iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, answering incoming FaceTime calls or starting new ones has never been easier.

Before we look into how to make/take calls, here are a few things worth noting:

  1. Your iPhone and Mac device should be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID
  2. Your iPhone and Mac device should be signed in to FaceTime with the same Apple ID
  3. Your iPhone and Mac device should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network

Settings on your iPhone

Your Mac can not take/make calls unless your iPhone allows it. To turn the feature on, head to ‘Settings,’ scroll down to ‘Phone’ and tap on ‘Calls on Other Devices.’

Toggle on ‘Allow Calls on Other Devices’ and a list of devices with the same iCloud account will appear below. From there, proceed to select your Mac.

Settings on your Mac

Open the FaceTime app on your Mac and head to the top bar. Tap on FaceTime on the top left and select ‘Preferences.’

A new pop-up window will open where you need to check ‘Calls From iPhone.’

How to make FaceTime calls from your Mac

Once you’ve completed all the steps listed above, making FaceTime calls from your Mac would work similarly to how you do it on your iPhone.

Open the FaceTime app on your Mac and enter the phone number you want to call. You will be presented with two options, ‘Audio’ and ‘Video.’ Proceed with however you wish to contact the person.

An easier way would be to go to contacts, click on the person’s name you want to call, and then tap FaceTime.

Further, clicking the (i) button/information button in your recent call history will bring up a pop-up, from which you can also initiate a FaceTime call.

Accepting FaceTime calls from your Mac

The only pre-requisite to accepting FaceTime calls on a Mac is that you ensure you’ve followed all the settings mentioned above. To re-iterate, your iPhone and Mac device should be signed in to iCloud and FaceTime with the same Apple ID, along with being connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Any incoming FaceTime call on your iPhone will also ring on your Mac, provided your Mac is active. When your phone rings, a pop-up will automatically appear on the top right of your Mac screen.

See the image below for reference:

Once accepted, you can add more people to the call, change audio options, including Voice Isolation and Wide-Spectrum mode, pause the call, SharePlay and much more.

Here’s how to invite Android friends to a FaceTime call on iOS 15

With the introduction of iOS 15, FaceTime calls have gained significant new features, including a ‘Microphone Mode’ with voice isolation/wide spectrum and a ‘Portrait Mode’ that blurs whatever is in your background.

However, the most notable feature is Android FaceTime support.

Similar to how Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Cisco Webex work, Apple’s FaceTime too now allows you to create a shareable link for others to join, no matter what platform they’re on.

The new feature will enable friends, family or colleagues who do not have an Apple device to join a FaceTime video/audio call via a web browser on any non-Apple device, including Windows PCs and Android phones.

It’s worth noting that non-apple users can only join a FaceTime call and can’t create one.

Here is how you can initiate a FaceTime call and invite your friend to it on iOS 15:

  • Launch the FaceTime app on your iPhone running iOS 15.
  • Tap on ‘Create Link.’
  • Give a name to the video room by tapping ‘Add Name.’ This step is optional.
  • Decide how you want to share the link (message, email, WhatsApp, Instagram) and tap that option. Proceed to send the link to all the people you want to invite.

That’s all you need to do on the iOS end. Once your invitees receive the link and open it, they’ll be redirected to the webpage with a popup asking for their name.

Upon joining, you’ll have to admit the invitees. While they’ll have all the traditional FaceTime controls, i.e., camera On/Off, mic mute, switching between the rear and front camera, they won’t be able to use Memojis, filters, stickers, etc.

Ryan Gosling video calls his baby constantly

Ryan Gosling reportedly video calls his seven-week-old daughter ”constantly.”

The 33-year-old actor, whose girlfriend Eva Mendes gave birth to their first child, Esmerelda Amada, in September, has become addicted to FaceTime while filming his upcoming movie, ‘The Nice Guys,’ in Atlanta, as he hates being apart from them.

A source told E! News that the star is in constant contact with Eva and their little girl and he also made a quick trip back to Los Angeles over the weekend to see them.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old ‘Hitch’ actress is relying on her mother, Eva Perez Suarez, to help her care for Esmerelda while Ryan is working.

The insider said: ”While Ryan is gone, her mom has been spending a lot of time helping her. His mom comes too, but her mom is the mainstay.”

The brunette beauty was recently spotted showing off her trim post-pregnancy figure, but hasn’t embarked on a drastic diet.

The source said: ”Eva’s flattered that people think she looks good, but she’s not taking complete credit for it. She knows genetics plays a big role. She has great genes.

”Overall, she’s trying to eat only when hungry and not snack too much. For her splurges, her mom’s been cooking her traditional Spanish dishes. Those are her treats.”
