Another Fitbit device passes through FCC, could be a new tracker

Fitbit just announced three new devices, but there could be more on the way. According to FCC details uncovered by 9to5Google, a new Fitbit tracker (possibly a Charge 6 or Luxe 2) could arrive soon with Bluetooth and NFC.

9to5 was able to obtain an ‘e-label’ filed with the FCC on August 25th, which happened to be exactly one year after Fitbit announced the Charge 5. Moreover, the e-label is for a Fitbit with the model number ‘FB423’ — the Charge 5 was FB421. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the e-label is for the Charge 6, as Fitbit’s new Inspire 3 tracker sports model number FB424.

On top of that, 9to5Google points to its recent report about Google Wallet coming to Fitbit devices. In the report, the publication spotted a reference to a ‘Charge 6’ with Bluetooth and NFC — the FCC filing seems to line up with that.

While things generally seem to line up with the FB423 device being the Charge 6, it’s possible it could be a successor to the company’s Luxe tracker. With the Inspire 3 getting a colour screen, there’s less to differentiate the Luxe from the Inspire line — support for NFC payments could do that.

As for when this mystery device will launch, well, that’s unclear. 9to5 suggests it could launch later this year since the Fb423 device wasn’t included in the recently unveiled fall lineup. However, Fitbit would likely want the device out ahead of the holiday season. With the timing for that being a little tight, it might make more sense for an early 2023 launch (plus, that would avoid a new Charge 6 or Luxe 2 tracking cannibalizing holiday sales for the current versions of both trackers).

Google files with FCC for mysterious ‘wireless’ device

FCC filings often indicate what companies might have in store when it comes to future products.

As reported by The Verge, a recent Google FCC filing reveals a mysterious product described as a “Wireless device” that’s battery-powered and offers no AC connection, though it can be powered via USB. The available information isn’t enough to deduce what the product might be. However, 9to5Google suggests that it could be a Nest device that uses 3.65V rechargeable batteries.

According to a recent leak, Google’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro would launch on October 13th, with pre-orders going live on October 6th. This means that Google will likely host an event around those dates, and that is when we might hear more about the wireless device in question.

Amazon, on the other hand, seems to be developing a new version of the Echo Studio smart speaker. The FCC filing describes the product as a “Digital Media Receiver,” with an AC power cable and a Zigbee radio. It’s worth noting that the filing wasn’t done under the name of Amazon, and rather under the name of a shell company called Flake LLC. Flake LLC has a different filling for a “Digital Media Receiver” that seems to be the Echo Studio, which somewhat proves that it is one of Amazon’s shell companies.

The only difference between the old Echo Studio speaker and the new one seems to be the addition of a different MediaTek wireless chip. It’s unclear why Amazon is making such a minuscule change to the product, though chip supply issues could be a probable cause.

Photos of Dyson’s upcoming robot vacuum revealed in FCC filing

It looks like Dyson has a new robot vacuum incoming, according to pictures included in a filing with the FCC.

Spotted by The Verge, this new, unnamed Dyson robot vacuum sports the same striking blue colour as the company’s previous robot, the 360 Heurist (pictured above). The charging dock also sports the blue instead of the white colour with the Heurist. The top-mounted camera also returns — Dyson previously told me the camera allows the robot to navigate like a sailor looking at the stars.

Hopefully this unnamed Dyson robot does a better job at star-based navigation than the 360 Heurist did (RIP Stargazer).

Besides the colour and camera, the new Dyson robot is a significant departure from the 360 Heurist. For one, it’s not a circle like before and now features a squared-off edge with a larger cylindrical brush. The Verge describes the flat edge as the rear, but the pictures make it look more like the front of the robot — that would also be a significant change from the Heurist, which has the dust-bin at the front and the brush bar towards the back.

More importantly, the new robot appears shorter than the 360 Heurist. It’s hard to tell just from these FCC pictures, but if it is shorter, it could get under some furniture for a more thorough clean. The 360 Heurist was quite tall for a robot vacuum and often couldn’t go beneath some furniture.

Branding on the top of the unnamed robot indicates it features Dyson’s new ‘Hyperdymium’ motors, which the company also included in its latest stick vacuums.

The robot appears to have a removable section of tubing, which should be helpful in clearing any clogs.

All in all, the new Dyson robot looks like it could be a significant upgrade over the 360 Heurist. Still, it appears the new robot won’t be able to self-empty like several of iRobot’s Roomba robot vacuums. That’s unfortunate, since not having to empty the robot every few runs is a welcome benefit, in my opinion.

We’ll likely learn more about Dyson’s fancy new robot in the coming weeks.
