Ferrari customer info stolen in a data breach

Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari said that it has fallen victim to a ransomware attack that exposed its customers’ personal information, as shared by TechCrunch.

“We regret to inform you of a cyber incident at Ferrari, where a threat actor was able to access a limited number of systems in our IT environment,” said Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna in a letter sent to affected customers. “As part of this incident, certain data relating to our clients was exposed, including names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers.”

Ferrari did not disclose how many customers were affected by the breach or how and when the company was compromised, though it did say that no payment details or bank account information was stolen in the breach.

Despite the attack, Ferrari maintained that the operational functions of its company had not been affected. It added that it has not paid the unnamed hackers’ ransom demand, saying that doing so “does not fundamentally change the data exposure.” Instead, Ferrari is working with “third-party experts” to reinforce its systems and investigate the breach.

A Recall for the Ferrari F355

Produced from 1994 to 1999, the Ferrari F355 was the first car from the Italian automaker to be equipped with the F1 gearbox and steering wheel paddle shifters.

In 1997, Ferrari first issued a recall of its Berlinetta V8.  A problem with the fuel pump required repairs that could be handled at a local garage.  However, some of these repairs were not handled properly.  The result is a defect that can cause a leak in the engine compartment.  In worst cases, this human error can cause the car to catch fire.

The NHTSA has now issued a new recall, twelve years after the initial problem was discovered.  Today, at least 2356 F355s, F355 Spiders and 355 F1s are potentially affected.

The Rebirth of the Ferrari GTO

The Ferrari 250 GTO and 288 GTO are probably among the 5 most legendary models in Ferrari’s history. The 250 GTO was the most expensive car for many years, with a price tag of around $10 000 000 CAD. As for the 288 GTO, it has served as the foundation of development for the F40.

So when pre-orders are mentioned for a Ferrari 599 GTO Limited Edition, our temperature starts to rise and rumours begin to spark.

This ultimate version of the Italian GT revisits elements developed under the 599XX programme. The weight of the beast has been decreased by 60 kg, thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre, while the 6-litre V12 will produce a whopping 700 horsepower!

The return of the prestigious brand makes perfect sense, since the Lamborghini Murcielago is making its comeback with the SV.

There is rumour that the new Ferrari will cost 400 000 USD for each of its 500 models produced. The Ferrari 599 GTO could be making an appearance at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2010.

The Ferrari 599 China Sold at Auction

The anonymous buyer from Shanghai paid the final price of 1.2 million euros, roughly $1.9 million CAD.

This particular Ferrari differs from its counterparts by a special paint job, hand created by the Chinese artist Lu Hao.  The car’s detailing was inspired by porcelain of the Song Dynasty.

The auction was organised by Ferrari and held at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing.  Other items for bid included a racing overall worn by F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella, and a helmet and model car autographed by Michael Schumacher.

The funds raised at the auction will support the brightest students and professors at the Automotive Engineering Department of Tsinghua University.  They will be given a chance to study at the Politecnico di Milano Technical University in Italy, and also at Ferrari’s headquarters.

Ferrari Working on a 4×4

The prancing horse brand could be undergoing the most significant changes in history since the rear-drive Dino 246GT engine first appeared. Ferrari is currently working on a hybrid 4WD.

The gas engine will still distribute power to the rear wheels, but two small electric motors could be added to the front wheels.

Sources from the British site Autocar revealed that these electric motors are not added to lower fuel consumption, but rather to improve acceleration and cornering speeds.

The system would allow power to be sent precisely and independently to each of the front wheels to improve the car’s performance on turns.

The first hybrid Ferraris are not expected to appear before 2014.

Further Details for New McLaren

While the official Web site is meant to give fans a closer look at the car, there was no indication of the model being a convertible.

However, England’s Autocar let out a rumour, thanks to an error made at the Woking site. Concerning the plans of McLaren’s new ultra-modern factor dedicated to building the MP4-12C, they found a zone called "Webasto RHT Sub Assembly," and in the technical jargon of the auto maker, RHT signifies "Retractable Hard Top."

This should be causing those at Ferrari and Lamborghini to break into cold sweats, who are already preoccupied with competition in the realm of sports coupes.

Ferrari’s Future Plans Revealed

In an interview with Britain’s Car magazine, Ferrari director Amedeo Felisa revealed further details about the replacement of the brand’s V12 models.

The first to be renewed is the 612 Scaglietti. With mixed commercial success, the 612 has been on the market since 2004, and will continue to stay in the game in 2012.

At around the same time, the automaker’s new supercar is set to make its debut. After the 288 GTO, F40, F50 and the Enzo, the flagship of the stallion brand is bound to make an impact.

Several technical solutions are currently being researched. Although Ferrari has already begun working on it, the hybrid is not yet ready to claim supercar status, but we can assume that it will be smaller and lighter than the Enzo, and will be powered by a V12 or a V8 turbo, such as those found in the F40.

As for the 599 GTB Fiorano, the recent release of the HGTE handling pack breathes new life into the model. The Fiorano’s replacement will not be out before 2015.

A New Electric Supercar

This week, the German company e-Wolf released the first official renderings of the e-2, an electric supercar.

Although the e-1, a smaller electric car, will be on the market for the first time in early 2010, the company is already looking ahead with the e-2.

The supercar has a style that is somewhere between a Ferrari Enzo, a Lamborghini Reventon, and a Star Wars space shuttle.

On the technical side, e-Wolf announced that the vehicle will be propelled by 4 electric motors housed in each wheel, delivering 536 horsepower.

The supercar’s weight will be maintained at 900 kilos, thanks to its carbon frame.  A prototype will be introduced in 2011, followed by a commercial launch.
