Xplornet’s fibre network is now available to hundreds of homes in PEI

Xplornet’s fibre network is now available to hundreds of homes and businesses in Vernon Bridge, PEI and surrounding communities.

The move is part of the rural service provider’s commitment to connecting 3,700 residents to its high-speed network.

Plans start at $99.99 a month and include download and upload speeds of 100Mbps.

The network is available to 270 homes in Vernon Bridge and surrounding communities, including MillviewVernon RiverPownalMount MellickAlexandraAlberry PlainsBelfastSummerville and Eldon. Xplornet will announce more communities over the year.

“Access to high-speed internet unlocks opportunities for online work and learning, drives economic development, and helps rural communities participate in the digital world. We’re eager to deliver these benefits and connect rural Islanders,” Allison Lenehan, president and CEO of Xplornet, said.

Xplornet is laying down 600 kilometres of optic cable across the province, which connects to the company’s fibre network across the Maritimes.

The company is also upgrading wireless towers across PEI for faster upload and download speeds for thousands of homes and businesses by the end of 2023.

Xplornet has also made similar announcements in Sundre, Alberta and various rural Ontario communities.

Rogers expands its pure fibre network to New Brunswick

Rogers is investing nearly $200 million to improve network access in New Brunswick.

The investment will improve fibre connection in 314,000 homes and businesses, allowing them to access all Rogers services. The communities of Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview, and Shediac will be the first to see improvements.

The broadband connection delivers a better online experience and supports more devices, including gaming and smart home technology. Customers will also be able to access internet services that have download and upload speeds up to 1.5GB per second.

“It is important that we continue to invest in our communities to ensure that customers have access to faster and more reliable service than ever, especially as technology continues to evolve and the world becomes more connected,” Matt MacLellan, president of the company’s Atlantic Region, said in a statement. “We are excited to bring 100 percent pure fibre to New Brunswick and give residents and business owners access to the network of the future.”

The announcement is part of a string of recent investments the company has made in Atlantic Canada. The company was the first to provide 5G services to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and currently provides the service across 16 communities.

SaskTel continues expansion of fibre network in rural communities

SaskTel is on a mission to bring its fibre option network, called infiNet, to rural communities across Saskatchewan.

In 2020, the organization announced the Rural Fibre Initiative to bring its network to 60,000 residents and businesses across 45 rural communities by the end of 2023.

On December 6th, the company announced 24 additional communities will receive access. Carrot River, Foam Lake, and Osler are some of the communities on the list. Construction is expected to begin next year.

“The need for connectivity continues to grow at a rapid pace,” Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SaskTel, said in a statement. “Through SaskTel’s Rural Fibre Initiative, tens of thousands of rural Saskatchewan families and businesses will gain access to advanced fibre optic broadband infrastructure better enabling them to connect and thrive in the modern world.

Three prior phases have already been announced. Communities announced in phase one will have fibre available by March 2022. Construction for communities part of phase two has already begun. Communities listed in phase three will see construction start next year.

Bell MTS moves fibre broadband network into Manitoba’s Pembina Valley

Bell MTS — a Manitoba-based subsidiary of BCE — plans to expand its fibre internet infrastructure and services in the Pembina Valley over the coming months.

The expansion will affect 4,500 locations in Altona, Plum Coulee, Emerson and Morris.

According to the press release, residents in these regions can expect to begin gaining access to Bell’s broadband fibre network starting this fall.

This project is funded by a $1.7 billion Canada-wide investment from Bell aimed at improving its infrastructure and services on a national level.

The same investment footed the bill for a 900 location network expansion in the Nova Scotian Municipality of Barrington, which Bell also announced today.
