Koodo, Fido, Virgin Plus offering $45/15GB, $55/20GB plans in Quebec

Over the weekend, MobileSyrup detailed some promotional plans on offer from the Big Three flanker brands. While the $60/20GB and $55/10GB plans are decent offers in most provinces, they don’t count for much in Quebec. Instead, Quebec residents can get better plans ranging from $40/8GB to $55/20GB.

Telus’ Koodo, Bell’s Virgin Plus, and Rogers’ Fido all list these plans (as first spotted by iPhone in Canada), although only the latter doesn’t have them marked as limited-time offers. Moreover, the plans all include unlimited Canada-wide talk and text, among other features.

Let’s take a quick look:

Koodo

Koodo’s Quebec plans as of August 2nd, 2022

Koodo currently offers a $40/mo 8GB plan, a $45/15GB plan and a $55/20GB plan. All three are marked as limited-time offers, with the 15GB and 20GB plans listed as including bonus data. The $45/15GB plan is actually a 9GB plan with 6GB of bonus data, while the $55/20GB is actually a 15GB plan with 5GB of bonus data.

These plans are available here.

Virgin Plus

Virgin’s Quebec plans as of August 2nd, 2022

Virgin Plus also has $40/8GB, $45/15GB and $55/20GB plans. All three are limited-time offers, although Virgin only lists the $55 plan as having bonus data (specifically, it’s a 15GB plan with 5GB of extra data).

You can check out the plans here.

Fido

Fido’s Quebec plans as of August 2nd, 2022

Finally, Fido has all these plans as well, although it doesn’t list any of them as limited-time offers. Moreover, Fido doesn’t mark any of the plans as having bonus data. The plans are just straight up $40/8GB, $45/15GB, and $55/20GB.

Check them out here.

It’s worth noting that if you click through and don’t see the prices, you’ll want to make sure your region is set to Quebec by clicking the drop-down menu in the top-right corner of each provider’s website and selecting ‘Quebec.’ You can check out the Ontario plans here.

Koodo, Fido add $55/10GB plans to match Virgin Plus

Yesterday, the Big Three flanker brands — Telus’ Koodo, Rogers’ Fido, and Bell’s Virgin Plus — rolled out new $60/mo 20GB promotional plans. At the time, Virgin also offered a $55/mo 10GB plan, and now Koodo and Fido have added matching plans.

First, let’s talk about Virgin’s plan. The Bell flanker brand lists the $55/mo 10GB plan as a limited-time offer with a $5/mo bill credit for 12 months. It’s only available for new bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) activations.

Although the website isn’t entirely clear, it looks like the $5/mo discount applies on top of the $55/mo price, which means you’ll pay $50 for 10GB for 12 months. That pricing wasn’t reflected when I tried to check out with the plan, but a sales representative confirmed that’s how it worked.

Virgin Plus plans as of July 30th, 2022

It’s worth noting that Virgin’s $60/20GB plan similarly includes a $5/mo discount for 12 months, which wasn’t listed on the plan yesterday. That makes the $60/20GB plan from Virgin a better deal than Fido or Koodo since you’ll pay $5 less for the first 12 months ($60 total savings).

Koodo plans as of July 30th, 2022

Next up, Koodo. The Telus flanker brand has offered a $55/mo 8GB plan for a while now, but it has added a $55/10GB ‘promo’ plan too (while writing this article, Koodo updated its website to remove the second $55/8GB plan).

Koodo’s 10GB plan is also a limited-time offer, only available to BYOP customers, and the plan notes that it’s the $55/8GB plan with 2GB of bonus data for 10GB total.

Fido plans as of July 30th, 2022

Finally, Rogers flanker brand Fido appears to have just changed its existing $55/8GB plan to a $55/10GB plan to match the others. The Fido website doesn’t indicate whether the plan is a limited-time offer. Moreover, if you try to get a phone on Fido’s website, the website automatically selects the $60/20GB plan, and there’s no option to choose the $55/10GB plan.

So, it looks like if you want to get either the $55/10GB or $60/20GB plans, Virgin Plus will be the best option. Although the $5/mo bill credit only lasts 12 months, that’s still a $60 savings over Koodo and Fido. However, keep an eye out as the other providers may offer their own credits to match.

You can check out Virgin’s plans here, Koodo’s plans here, and Fido’s plans here. Note that prices may vary by region.

Koodo, Fido, Virgin roll out $60/mo 20GB promo plan

Just a few days after switching plans around with new $60/15GB and $65/20GB plans, the Big Three flanker brands now have a promotional $60/20GB plan.

As of July 29th, Telus’ Koodo, Rogers’ Fido and Bell’s Virgin Plus all list the new, promotional $60/mo 20GB plan that’s available for a limited time. However, none of the providers listed an end date for the promotion at the time of publication.

Moreover, Koodo and Virgin Plus list the $60 plan as a 10GB plan with a bonus 10GB of data, rather than a flat 20GB plan like Fido offers.

The main upside here is that the $60/20GB plan is a better value than the old $65/20GB plan offered by the three providers. However, anyone who just signed up for the $60/15GB plan may want to look into getting this offer for the extra 5GB of data.

Koodo’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

The downside is that all three providers still offer limited plan options for customers. Outside of the $60/20GB plan, Koodo, Fido, and Virgin don’t have many options for customers looking to buy a phone. Koodo, oddly, only offers the $60/20GB option for bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers — those looking to buy a phone get to choose between the recently added $60/15GB or $65/20GB plans.

Fido’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

Meanwhile, if you want to buy a phone from Fido, the only plan you can choose is the new, promotional $60/20GB plan. Virgin Plus, similarly, only offers the $60/20GB plan.

Virgin’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

That said, the three providers sometimes offer a $32/mo talk and text plan with select, low-end phones. Still, options remain limited.

Beyond that, the providers offer several CRTC-mandated ‘starter’ plans, but these are only available for BYOP customers, and some come with limitations like being capped at 3G speed.

Ultimately, if you have the budget for a $60/mo plan and need 20GB of data, these new promotional deals could be a good option for you. But you’ll need to move quickly since it’s not clear how long they’ll stick around.

Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus bring back $65/20GB plan, add new $60/15GB plan

Flanker brands Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus have brought back their $65/20GB plans after removing the options earlier this month.

As a quick recap, the three providers offered limited-time, promotional $65/mo plans with 20GB of data (the plans were actually $65/15GB with a 5GB bonus) back in mid-June. At the time, the three providers said the plans would stick around until July 4th — Koodo actually removed its plan a few days after the deadline.

Now those plans are back on the providers’ websites, although only Virgin Plus labelled the $65/20GB plan as a limited-time offer. Moreover, the plans list a full 20GB of data, not 15GB of data plus an additional 5GB like before. Instead, all three providers now offer a separate $60/mo plan with 15GB of data (again, only Virgin Plus lists that plan as a limited-time offer), which appears to replace a $60/10GB plan.

However, this is where the providers differ — Fido and Virgin don’t offer any other plans beyond their typical suite of CRTC-mandated starter plans. Koodo, however, lists several other plans on its website, including some that probably shouldn’t be there.

First, Koodo has a $55/mo 8GB promo plan. This isn’t new — it’s been around since mid-May. Then it appears Koodo still lists the old versions of its plans, $60/10GB and $65/15GB, alongside the new $60/15GB and $65/20GB plans. As per my testing, I’m able to add both new and old plans to my cart and navigate through the checkout process (although I didn’t complete any transactions since I’m not looking to switch at this time).

Presumably, this is just a glitch on Koodo’s website and it will de-list the old plans soon. Either way, if you’re shopping for a plan, make sure you’re picking the right plan, so you don’t end up paying more than you need to.

You can view Koodo’s plans here, Fido’s plans here, and Virgin’s plans here. Note some prices may vary by region.

Here are the outage credits offered by Rogers flanker brands and resellers

Following the nationwide July 8th Rogers network outage, the company promised it would credit customers the equivalent of two days’ worth of service. Rogers later upped that to a credit for five days’ worth of service.

However, Rogers’ network outage impacted more than just Rogers, so some might be wondering what — if any — credits will come down the pipe from their provider, whether that’s a flanker brand or reseller.

But before we get into it, it’s worth noting that no matter if you subscribe directly to Rogers or get services from another company, be aware of scams related to bill credits. So far, everyone that has offered a credit has said they will apply it automatically. If you get a text message or email asking you to do something to get the credit — like clicking a link — don’t do it.

Anyway, let’s get into it.

Fido

Rogers flanker brand Fido confirmed via its ‘Fido Solutions’ Twitter account that it would automatically credit customers five days’ worth of service following the outage.

Chatr

Similarly, Rogers flanker brand Chatr will offer customers five days’ worth of service as an automatic credit.

TekSavvy

Although TekSavvy resells Rogers internet in some regions, the provider hasn’t detailed plans to credit customers yet. When reached by MobileSyrup, TekSavvy indicated it didn’t have enough information about the situation to comment.

Oxio

In an email to customers (disclosure, I am one), Oxio said it would automatically apply a two-day pro-rated credit to customer bills starting on invoices dated after July 13th.

So far, this is just a short list of providers. MobileSyrup has reached out to some others but did not receive answers ahead of publication — the story will be updated with additional information as it becomes available. If you’ve heard from a provider about credits related to the Rogers outage, let us know down below.

Massive Rogers outage impacting internet, wireless across Canada

Rogers internet and mobile services are down for a large number of customers in Ontario and other provinces.

It’s not clear when the outage began, but reports began streaming in early Friday morning, with Ookla’s ‘Downdetector.ca’ reporting a spike starting around 4:30am. At 6:30am, Toronto police tweeted a warning that some Rogers customers may have difficulty calling 9-1-1 due to “technical difficulties” with the Rogers network.

Downdetector’s outage map shows some issues in B.C. and in Atlantic Canada, but the majority of the outage is concentrated in Ontario.

The Toronto Star reports that Fido customers are also impacted. It’s also worth noting that customers using internet services that run over Rogers’ network, like TekSavvy and Oxio, are also experiencing network issues.

Rogers has not yet provided a statement about the outage, and MobileSyrup has reached out to the carrier for more details.

The ‘@RogersHelps’ Twitter account has directed some users to check the company’s Community Forum for details about the outage. However, the page linked by the account doesn’t actually have any information available. Moreover, if you head to the company’s outage support page, the only way to get information is through Rogers’ support chatbot.

At the time of writing, the chatbot told me that “something went wrong” and that it would fetch a Live Chat agent to help. Some users reported difficulties with the chatbot and complained about the lack of publicly-available outage information on Rogers’ website.

Koodo, Fido still offer $65/20GB promo plan slated to end July 4th

Back in mid-June, Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus rolled out a promotion that added 5GB of extra monthly data onto each provider’s respective $65/mo 15GB plan, bringing it up to 20GB of monthly data. At the time, all three providers listed the promo as running until July 4th, but only Bell’s Virgin Plus has held to that.

As of July 5th, Virgin Plus no longer lists the $65/20GB promo on its website — instead, it’s back to the $65/mo 15GB plan the provider previously offered.

Virgin Plus $65/15GB plan as of July 5th

Meanwhile, Rogers’ Fido and Telus’ Koodo have removed the July 4th end date from their $65/mo 20GB promotional plans. Both still list the plan as a “limited time offer,” but there’s no longer an end date. In other words, if you wanted to grab this plan and haven’t, now’s probably a good time to get it since it’s not clear how much longer it’ll be available.

Moreover, Koodo and Fido still offer $55/8GB plans, while Virgin Plus does not. These plans aren’t new, but Koodo has listed its $55/8GB option as a “promotion” since discounting it by $1 in May.

Anyway, if you’re looking to get a little extra data for your dollar, now might be the last good chance to get the $65/20GB promo before it’s gone.

Fido adds 150Mbps data speed caps to its plans

Rogers flanker brand Fido is the latest Canadian provider to add data speed caps to its mobile plans.

A recent update to the Fido website added that all plans include “4G LTE Speeds.” Further, the fine-print contained in the ‘See full details’ drop-down section says “Speeds capped at 150 Mbps. In times of congestion, your data may be slowed according to the Fido Network Management Policy.” The site then links to this page with Fido’s terms, including the aforementioned policy.

The change brings Fido in line with other providers, including Telus, Koodo, Bell, and Virgin Mobile, all of which added speed caps to plans this year.

At the time of publication, Koodo had the slowest speeds with 100Mbps caps, while Bell and Telus had faster 250Mbps speeds. As an aside, Telus lists some plans with 1Gbps speed caps, while Bell lists some 5G plans as having the “fastest available 5G speeds” with no specific cap. Fido and Virgin Mobile hold the middle ground with 150Mbps caps.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Fido regarding the change and whether we’ll see data caps come to Rogers as well. It remains unclear if the change applies only to new plans, or if it applies retroactively to past Fido plans. We’ll update this post with any response from the provider.

You can view Fido’s new speed caps for yourself here.

Koodo, Fido, Virgin roll out $65/20GB limited-time offer

Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus have updated their plan pages with a new limited-time offer: $65/mo for 20GB of data.

The deal essentially adds 5GB of bonus data onto the flanker brands’ existing $65/15GB plans. Both Koodo and Virgin list the offer as running until July 4th, while Fido’s site simply says it’s a “limited time” deal. Interestingly, Fido’s website also says the offer “will appear on your 2nd or 3rd invoice.”

Overall, the new offer isn’t bad. The three flanker brands also offer $60/mo 10GB plans, so an extra $5/mo for double the data is pretty decent.

The $65/20GB plans include, as usual, Canada-wide calling, texting, and other features. You can check out the deal for yourself at the following links:

Also, if you’re a lucky Koodo customer, you may not even need to spring for this offer. Some customers received texts from the carrier in June offering them 5GB of free bonus data on their current plans. You can read more about that here.
