Fido increases the price of its 10GB data, talk, and text plan twice in two weeks

Fido has increased the cost of its 10GB plan once again, this time by $3 a month.

The 10GB data, talk, and text plan previously cost new users $57 a month. It now costs $60 a month.

This is the second time in roughly two weeks Fido raised the cost of this plan.

On April 27th, the 10GB plan cost $56 a month, according to reporting from MobileSyrup. The price jumped to $57 a month on May 4th.

The $60 price tag was introduced on May 11th. This means Fido increased the cost of this plan by $4 in the past two weeks.

The Rogers flanker brand has also brought back its 8GB data, talk, and text plan. MobileSyrup reported the plan’s removal on April 27th, the same day Fido brought back its 10GB plan at $56 a month. The 8GB plan costs $55 a month before it was removed.

While the 8GB plan is now back and still costs $55/month it’s worth noting the cost of this plan has significantly increased in the past four months.

On January 19th, MobileSyrup reported the plan cost $52 a month. Today, the price is up by $3, meaning Fido tacked the plan with a 75-cent upcharge every month since January.

Fido removes 8GB plan from its website

Fido has changed its 8GB data, talk, and text plan.

The plan now includes 10GB of data for an extra dollar. The original 8GB plan was $55 a month. The addition of 2GB of data has seen the price increase to $56 a month.

The 10GB plan isn’t listed as a promotional option and seems to replace the original 8GB offer.

Fido isn’t the only flanker brand to increase its prices. Virgin Plus recently removed several limited-time offers and hiked its most affordable plan by $2 a month.

Telecom complaints decreased over the past year, the CCTS reports

Telecom complaints are down 26 percent, according to a recent report from the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS).

The report examines complaints received between August 1st, 2021 and January 31st, 2022, and compares them to the last mid-year report.

The CCTS accepted 6,682 complaints on 14 providers, with a 88 percent resolve rate.

The recent report shows complaints decreased by 26 percent, a change from the last report, which reported an increase.

Bell accounts for 17.7 percent of all complaints, Rogers 15 percent, Fido 11.3 percent, Telus 8 percent and Virgin Plus 7.6 percent.

Bell has the largest decrease, with 36 percent fewer complaints than the year prior. Fido follows with 20 percent. Rogers and Telus reported close declines, with 16.5 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively. Virgin Plus saw nearly 10 percent fewer complaints.

The Wireless Code

Wireless complaints represented almost half of all complaints the CCTS accepted, with ‘disclosure issues’ in the lead. Conflicts with contracts and agreements were the most complained about aspects.

The CCTS found 24 breaches of the wireless code, down from the 28 reported last year.

9 of these breaches stem from providers failing to give customers reasonable notification and relevant information before disconnecting services.

4 of the breaches were because the service provider didn’t supply the customer with a paper or electronic copy of the contract listing all relevant information to the wireless code.

3 of the breaches are related to ‘critical information summary’ where providers must give customers a document containing the most essential parts of the contract.

“We continue to observe problems with service providers failing to disclose important information to their customers when signing up for a new phone, internet or TV service,” CCTS Commissioner and CEO Howard Maker said. “This can lead to complaints if bills or services don’t meet the customer’s expectation.”

Koodo replaces $58/15GB promo and $52/8GB plans

Koodo has stopped offering its $52/month 8GB and $58/month 15GB plans to customers.

Those plans have been replaced with a $55/month 10 GB plan and a $60/month 15GB plan.

As earlier reported by MobileSyrup, the Telus flanker brand said it will discontinue the pricing on February 27th. While the $58/month 15GB was labelled as a promotional offer on the website, originally a 10GB plan with a 5GB data bonus, the $52/month 8GB wasn’t labelled as such.

Top: Koodo plans as of February 28th, 2022. Bottom: Koodo plans as of February 25th, 2022.

Both Fido and Virgin Plus have also replaced their $52/8GB and $58/15GB plans with $55/8GB and $60/15GB plans, respectively.

Koodo’s $58/month 15GB promotional plan has been available to customers periodically since January 22nd.

Fido removes $58/mo 10GB plan, leaves $55/8GB and $60/15GB options

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido dropped its $58/mo 10GB plan a couple of days after it became available.

While not a huge change overall, it’s now one less option for Fido customers, especially those looking to get a phone with the carrier. Fido only offers a small number of plans to customers who choose to get a phone from the carrier — with the removal of the $58/10GB option, there are now only two plans to pick from.

Customers who choose to bring their own phone have a few more options thanks to Fido’s lower-cost ‘Starter’ plans, ‘Talk & Text’ plans, and ‘Basic’ plans. Still, options remain fairly limited.

The $58/10GB plan emerged on February 24th after Fido ended its $58/15GB promotional offer. That promo plan was just the 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB of data, so it made sense that the $58/10GB was sticking around after the end of the promotion.

The two remaining ‘Data, Talk & Text’ plans are $55/mo 8GB and $60/mo 15GB. This matches what Bell’s Virgin Plus offers. Telus’ Koodo still offers the $58/15GB promo plan, but it’s set to end on February 27th. It’s unclear what plans Koodo will offer after the promo ends, but they will likely be similar to the current Fido and Virgin plans.

Fido’s plans are available here.

Fido raises plan prices by a few dollars after dropping $58/15GB deal

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido rolled out increased plan prices, marking an end to its ongoing $58/15GB deal.

Fido’s on-again-off-again $58/15GB deal came back on February 17th after the provider removed it for a few days. However, it seems unlikely the plan will come back again — it’s been replaced with a $60/mo 15GB plan. Like other flanker brands Koodo and Virgin Plus, the $58/15GB deal was actually a 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB of data.

It’s worth noting Bell’s Virgin Plus similarly replaced its $58/15GB promo plan with a $60/15GB plan. However, unlike Virgin Plus, Fido kept its 10GB plan around — it costs $58 per month.

Finally, Fido increased the cost of its 8GB plan from $52 to $55/mo.

Although the price increase isn’t huge, it’s still frustrating to see. It’s especially annoying when you consider these three plans are the only ones Fido offers to customers who want to buy a phone. The provider has cheaper ‘Starter’ plans, but those are limited to customers who bring their own devices.

At the time of publication, Telus’ Koodo had not changed its plan prices. Bell’s Virgin Plus has — you can read about those here.

Fido’s plans are available here.

Fido brings back $58/15GB promotion after removing it earlier this week

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido brought back the 5GB data bonus for its $58/mo 10GB plan, bringing it up to 15GB of data.

Fido previously offered the plan but removed it on February 7th. Last time, Fido’s website listed an expiry date for the promotion. At the time of publication, Fido’s website didn’t include an end date for the deal.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Fido for more clarification.

As before, the plan costs $58/mo and includes 10GB of data plus a 5GB bonus. It’s not clear if the 5GB bonus will drop off the plan after a period of time, or if it’s a permanent addition. Along with the data, the plan includes unlimited Canada-wide talk and text, picture, and video messaging, voicemail, call display, circle calling, and other Fido perks like access to Fido Xtra and five one-hour chunks of unlimited data use each month.

Fido’s other plans remain unchanged.

Fido’s plans, including the $58/15GB promo, as of Feb. 11, 2022.

Interestingly, Fido brought back the $58/15GB plan just after Telus’ flanker brand Koodo downgraded its $58/15GB promo plan back to $58/10GB. At the time of publication, Koodo still offered the 10GB version of the plan. Bell’s Virgin Plus, on the other hand, hasn’t yet removed its limited-time $58/15GB plan — it’s still available now.

Fido changes plans again, adds $58/15GB offer and removes ‘starter’ designation

Rogers flanker brand Fido has once again changed up its plans. This time around, the wireless provider has changed over its $60/12GB plan to a $58/15GB plan, matching an offer provided by Koodo and Virgin Plus.

Interestingly, Fido also appears to have ditched its ‘starter’ plans, moving those options up to be counted as regular plans.

Koodo and Virgin added a limited-time $58/mo plan with 15GB of data back on January 22nd. Initially, Koodo offered a $60/15GB plan with a $5/mo bill credit but later adjusted the pricing to match Virgin and dropped the bill credit. It’s worth noting that both Koodo and Virgin promote their plans as $58/10GB plans with a 5GB data bonus, not as 15GB plans.

Fido has finally joined the other two flanker brands in offering a $58/mo 10GB plan with a 5GB data bonus for 15GB total. Further, Fido doesn’t list the plan as a limited-time offer like the others, but given how frequently carriers change up plans, I imagine it won’t stick around for long. It’s worth noting that Fido seems to no longer offer the $5/mo bill credit it had on January 19th.

Moreover, Fido offered a $70/mo 15GB plan prior to January 19th. That just makes the $58/15GB offer even sweeter. All plans include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, call display, circle calling and voicemail.

As for the starter plans, Fido seems to have removed that ‘starter’ designation, although the plans appear to have similar restrictions — you can’t select them if you choose to buy a phone on contract from Fido. If you’re buying a phone (even a cheap one like the Moto G Power) you can only pick from Fido’s $52/8GB or $58/15GB plans. Bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers, however, can select any plan they want.

Beyond the removal of the ‘starter’ designation, the plans remain unchanged:

  • $37.50/mo 2GB
  • $41.25/mo 4GB
  • $45/mo 6GB

As I’ve mentioned before, these plans match the government’s price reduction targets from its wireless price tracking initiative. However, the ‘starter’ designation and the various restrictions applied to these plans by wireless providers — such as making them unavailable to customers who want a phone — make them less useful for Canadians. It will be interesting to see if Koodo and Virgin follow suit in removing the ‘starter’ designation from their plans.

You can check out all of Fido’s plans here.

Feds achieve target to reduce wireless prices, but say more needs to be done

Canadians pay some of the highest cell phone bills in the world. The federal government promised to reduce wireless bills by 25 percent to change this.

The government says the commitment, made in March 2020, has now been achieved three months ahead of schedule.

But just as we’ve seen in previous reports released by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), questions remain.

It’s important to point out this is the first and only quarter where all provinces have met the minimum 25 percent target through non-promotional plans. Before this, plans were only available on a promotional basis. It wasn’t until October 2021 that Koodo, Fido, and Virgin brought out ‘starter’ plans to meet government targets. It’s worth noting that these starter plans come with several restrictions, namely that they aren’t available to customers who also want to get a smartphone from a carrier.

The reductions have seen a $50/mo plan with 2GB of data drop to $37.50/mo, a $55/4GB option drop to $41.25/mo and a $60/6GB plan drop to $45/mo.

As in previous reports, all provinces except Quebec have matching charts (Ontario chart is the one shown).

The government specifically required the ‘Big Three’ (Bell, Telus, and Rogers) to offer these reductions across their brands. What they didn’t require was for the three to offer the reductions themselves, which resulted in the carrier’s flanker brands (Virgin Plus, Koodo, and Fido respectively) offering plans that meet the government targets while the Big Three continue to offer plans starting at $80/mo.

While there is progress from each sub-brand, there’s no improvement to plans offered by the larger corporations that own them. Data shared with the public doesn’t include any numbers from the Big Three themselves.

Quebec

The data reported by the ISED show similar figures across all provinces, except for Quebec.

Fido and Virgin deliver a 27 percent reduction on the 4GB data option. The report notes that both companies offered 4GB options that would meet the 25 percent threshold and the 27 percent threshold. The less expensive one is included in the report, hence the 27 percent reduction.

Data also shows carriers in the province have offered a 3GB service option on and off since October 2020. In some cases, it was promotional, but it appeared to be a part of their regular lists in most months.

Looking at this quarter only (October 2021 to December 2021), Virgin offered a $40/mo plan with 3GB of data in October and November that isn’t marked as a promotional offer. Fido offered a similar plan for the two months but lists it as promotional. Koodo only offers the plan through a promotion in October.

The quarterly report does not state if the companies met the 3G target because there was no benchmark number available to compare it to. It’s unclear why the government show 3G as an option if data is not available from carriers.

In a press release, the government says “wireless services are still too expensive” and promises to build on the changes we’ve seen so far. No specific details are included as to how and when this will be done.
