Fido removes 10GB, 15GB plans and ups 8GB plan by $2/mo

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido has changed up its plan options, dropping two out of the four main plans and slightly increasing the cost of another.

Like other flanker brands Koodo and Virgin Plus, Fido currently offers two sets of plans — normal plans, called ‘Data, Talk & Text’ and ‘Starter’ plans. The Starter plans are intended to be lower-cost options and are typically only available for customers who bring their own phone (called BYOP or BYOD). Those plans remain unchanged, likely because they match the government targets from the ongoing wireless price tracking program.

Fido’s ‘Data, Talk & Text’ plans, however, have changed. Earlier this week, the flanker brand listed four plans under this category, which have now changed as follows:

  • $50/mo 8GB — now $52/mo 8GB
  • $55/mo 10GB — no longer available
  • $60/mo 12GB — unchanged
  • $70/mo 15GB — no longer available

It’s worth noting that all of Fido’s plans include unlimited Canada-wide and international text, picture and video messages sent from Canada, voicemail, unlimited incoming text, picture and video messaging in Canada, call display and, unless otherwise specified, unlimited Canada-wide minutes. These details remain unchanged.

Worse, Fido appears to block customers from selecting the $52/8GB plan if they’re also getting a phone. The typical process for selecting a phone and plan on Fido’s website remains unchanged. Customers browse a list of smartphones and select the one they want, then click through to the ‘Build Your Plan’ page. On this page, customers must walk through several steps to select options like how they want to finance the phone and what plan they want.

FIdo device checkout page

Fido’s device checkout page currently doesn’t let you switch the $60/12GB plan for something else.

However, in my testing, the website currently auto-selects the $60/12GB plan and does not currently allow customers to change that selection. This happens regardless of the value of the smartphone selected — everything from high-end iPhones to budget options like the Moto G Power and ZTE Blade A7P get the $60/12GB plan.

You can check out Fido’s plans here. Note that prices may be different depending on your province (for example, Quebec typically has different, often lower pricing than Ontario).

Pixel 6 series will finally get December/January update on January 17, according to Canadian carriers

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will finally get Google’s December/January Android security patch next week if Canadian carriers are correct.

According to Fido’s and Telus’ OS update schedules, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will receive the anticipated security update on January 17th.

Google initially rolled out the update back on December 13th. The December update was delayed more than a week, but it came with 80 fixes and other improvements. However, it also included a nasty bug that cause the phone to drop calls. Because of this issue, Google paused the rollout of the update.

When the beginning of January rolled around, many hoped the January and December update would hit their Pixel 6 devices, but that wasn’t the case. Only Pixel devices ranging from the Pixel 3a to Pixel 5a received the patch.

But hopefully, next week’s update solves these problems.

The update’s standout features include improved fingerprint sensor stability and performance, fixes for screen flickering and full 23W wireless charging from the Pixel Stand 2.

Further, there are also several specific camera updates:

  • General image quality improvements in camera preview/capture
  • General improvements for camera stability and performance
  • General improvements for auto-focus response in certain capture modes
  • General improvements for colour consistency in viewfinder preview
  • Fix for issue causing blank viewfinder preview in certain conditions

You can check out the complete list of fixes from the December update, here.

The January security patch provides a fix for an Android issue that can prevent emergency calls. The update also fixes Wi-Fi call dropping issues, incorrect data usage accounting, a memory leak in the system UI and more.

You can find all the fixes for the January update, here.

Hopefully, the above carrier release timeline is accurate because otherwise, there will be a lot of upset Canadian Pixel 6 owners.

Fido offering 50 percent off select internet plans for 12 months

Rogers flanker-brand Fido is offering a decent deal that can net you cheap internet for about 12 months.

Currently, Fido has its 75Mbps and 150Mbps internet plans discounted by 50 percent for 12 months. That means the prices are as follows:

  • 75Mbps down / 10Mbps up, unlimited – $37.50/mo for 12 months (usually $75/mo)
  • 150Mbps down / 15Mbps up, unlimited – $42.50/mo for 12 months (usually $85/mo)

Overall, those discounted prices seem pretty good, and they actually make both plans cheaper than Fido’s base $60/mo 30Mbps plan, which isn’t included in the deal.

A few other details include that there’s a one-time $49.99 installation fee if you don’t choose to self-install, and Fido notes in the fine print that plan “prices may increase during subscription.”

Moreover, several posts on a RedFlagDeals thread about the deal note that the offer is primarily for new customers, but some posters indicated they had success getting the deal as an existing customer. Other posters warned that users should watch their bills to make sure Fido includes the modem rental in the discounted price — some users claim Fido didn’t apply the discount to the modem rental, despite the company’s website listing the rental as included.

It’s also worth noting that Bell’s Virgin Plus offers slightly cheaper pricing on its slightly worse internet plans. Virgin currently has 25Mbps for $35/mo, 50Mbps for $35/mo and 100Mbps for $40/mo. Virgin is offering credits for 12 months, instead of a flat percentage discount — for example, the 100Mbps plan normally costs $80/mo but includes $40 in credits each month for 12 months. You can learn more about that here.

Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus Boxing Day deals include 17GB for $55 data plan

If you got a new phone over the holidays and you’re looking for a new plan to complement it, look no further than one of the big three flanker brands. Fido, Virgin Plus, and Koodo offer identical online plans that include 17GB of data for $55 per month.

This is a huge discount, and if you can snag it, an actual fair valuation for price per data in Canada. I can say it’s tempting me back away from Telus.

These new plans only seem to apply to new activations, so I’d aim for Virgin or Koodo first, but if you’re already with them or live in an area that has better Rogers coverage, its flanker brand, Fido is really a fine alternative.

Both the Rogers’ owned carrier and Koodo even offered me a $50 bill credit when I went through the motions of signing up when writing this deal.

The carriers are also offering 12GB for $50 if you don’t need as much data and want to save a bit of cash throughout the year.

You can find the deals below:
