Canadians sure do love Nintendo, especially Fire Emblem

Historically, news of the best-selling video games each year has been focused on the U.S. and you’d be hard-pressed to find any Canadian-specific data. Even when brands like PlayStation release sales breakdowns, Canada is lumped in with the U.S.

Now, however, that’s finally changing. The Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC), the lobbying group on behalf of Canada’s booming video game industry, has partnered with NPD Group to reveal Canadian-specific figures each month. Until now, the market research firm has only publicly divulged U.S. data.

It’s an initiative that Jayson Hilchie, ESAC president and CEO, says is particularly “exciting” to get out there.

“This idea of Canadian sales really spun out of an idea that we were going to write an op-ed about how important Canadian games were on a global stage,” Hilchie told MobileSyrup. “We were going around the world getting German sales, we were getting Pan-European sales, Australian sales, British sales, Türkiye, and NPD sales in the U.S. And the whole point was to show how many Canadian games were in the top 10, top 20, best-selling over the holidays, all around the world.”

While he says those plans ultimately fell through, he says his organization’s long-running relationship with NPD Group paved the way to a different initiative: publishing Canada’s top 10 best-selling games directly through the ESAC. So far, he’s happy with the results.

“Obviously, I was happy to see the three Canadian games in the top 10,” he says of Canada’s inaugural January 2023 list. Indeed, the third, fourth and fifth spots are held by Dead Space (Montreal’s EA Motive), NHL 23 and FIFA 23 (both developed by EA Vancouver), respectively. Notably, while FIFA appeared on both the Canadian and U.S. lists, Madden NFL 23 was the only other sports game on the American list — a testament to how much Canadians love their hockey.

Hilchie also notes that this list is lacking Ubisoft, the French publishing giant with several studios across Canada, including in Quebec and Ontario. “Normally, I think we would see some Ubisoft games in there, but I don’t think they had a release calendar that matched that particular month.” Indeed, the company confirmed in January that sales were down in part due to a comparatively lighter 2022 lineup; major franchises Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry didn’t see new releases last year, while Just Dance 2023 underperformed.

It’s worth noting that January’s best-selling game in Canada, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, also has a Canadian connection. While the game was primarily developed by California’s Infinity Ward, Quebec City-based Beenox handled the PC port.

“I think as time goes on throughout the year, we’re always going to see at least a couple of Canadian games,” says Hilchie. “And in that top 10, I think is really good considering we’re a big industry, but we’re a small country relative to some of these other places.”

One area in which the Canadian list stood out from its American counterpart was the prevalence of Nintendo. On the U.S. list, the Japanese gaming giant’s Fire Emblem Engage and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet placed fifth and tenth, respectively. In Canada, Fire Emblem Engage was second and Scarlet and Violet placed seventh, while a third Nintendo title that didn’t chart on the U.S. list, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, came in at 10th. This also follows Nintendo’s recent confirmation that the Switch has been Canada’s best-selling console for five consecutive years.

While Hilchie says this likely speaks to Nintendo’s long, storied history in the industry, he says he’s more surprised by how much the company’s fans responded to the results of this data.

“I can tell you that the Nintendo fans, based on our social media site, are not only surprised but excited about the number two game on the list, [Fire Emblem Engage], especially because it doesn’t even include digital sales,” he says. “So it’s done quite well. Obviously, there are some major fans of that franchise that were happy to see that the game is doing quite well. To me, that was one of the more fun things that came out of it.”

He says this speaks to the surprisingly substantial public interest in this data, especially since it was dropped without any prior tease.

“One thing that was really exciting for us was that I don’t think we expected to see as much enthusiasm as there was for the sales data. We got something like 30,000 impressions on that original tweet, non-boosted impressions, which is a considerably high social media post for us,” he says, noting that ESAC’s social media posts are usually more policy, government, or initiative-related. “I’d be lying if I told you I thought that it was going to get as much excitement as what actually came out of it. So we’re really thrilled to move forward with this every month because it looks like we’ve got a really great base audience and we can just build from that.”

Hilchie also says there’s other Canadian-specific data that can be revealed as the reports evolve over time. While he notes that they’ll never divulge how many copies each game has sold as that’s each publisher’s proprietary information, they do have data for up to 50 games that could be shared in the future.

“I think that there’s a lot of opportunity for us, and I think NPD wanted to see how this worked out. But they’ve definitely said that they’ve got other data that they can share with us, and so time will tell what we put out. So we’re starting with this and now that we know there’s an appetite for this type of information, we’ll go from there.”

Ultimately, he says this is “another vertical” through which the ESAC can elevate its platform, especially as its found “a whole new kind of audience.”

Naturally, data like this helps the ESAC in its larger push to get government support for the national games sector. Coincidentally, our discussion came mere days after the reveal of Alberta’s latest budget, in which video games were not given an expected tax credit. The fact that this also happened while the province is getting significant publicity from HBO’s The Last of Us, a series based on a video game, makes the lack of a gaming tax credit all the more standout.

“The ironic thing about The Last of Us is that because it’s a published and distributed television show that it’s eligible for the film and television tax incentive that Alberta offers,” says Hilchie. “Yet if The Last of Us video game was shot and designed and developed there, it would get absolutely zero government support.”

Per the ESAC’s Canadian Video Game Industry: 2021 report, there are nearly 100 development studios in Alberta, including, arguably, Canada’s most famous: BioWare Edmonton, the creator of beloved RPGs like Star Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicMass Effect and Dragon Age.

“The seriousness of the matter is that the Alberta video game industry is a nice upstart industry,” says Hilchie. “They’ve got some serious capacity going there. There were investments in studios that set up there when the first iteration of the tax incentive came out, and you started to see a lot of interest in Calgary and Edmonton, and then the tax incentive was canceled.”

A provincial breakdown of the number of gaming studios in Canada, per ESAC’s 2021 report. (Image credit: ESAC)

He hopes that the spring election will offer an opportunity for ESAC, Digital Alberta and other groups to “put the issue back on the table” for all political parties.

“The fact of the matter is that the video game industry proves across Canada that when you put targeted government support toward it, it blows up. It grows. You can look anywhere, whether it’s the original Quebec tax incentive to Nova Scotia to Ontario,” he says.

He points to how such support has helped his native Nova Scotia grow immensely in 10 years, adding the likes of Ubisoft and Bethesda’s Alpha Dog Games (both in Halifax) and 2K Sports (Lunenberg) during this time.

“Now, there are not only those three big publishers but another 30 independent mobile game developers and PC game developers. It can show you what you can do in a place with a million people like Nova Scotia. Just think about what Alberta could pull off with two major cities and a larger population. So I’m disappointed but I’m not defeated.”

FIFA 23 players discover Ryan Reynolds cameos months after launch

FIFA 23 players are delighted after discovering that Ryan Reynolds actually has a role in the game.

It’s all thanks to the Vancouver funnyman’s co-ownership of Wales’ Wrexham AFC, the world’s third-oldest football club, alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney. As a result of that increased exposure, EA Vancouver’s last two FIFA games have featured Wrexham as a playable team, although we’re only now finding out, three months after FIFA 23 released, that Reynolds and McElhenney actually recorded lines for EA’s latest soccer sim.

Via Polygon, a match between Wrexham and Liverpool will actually have regular commentators Derek Rae and Stewart Robson briefly pass the mics over to Reynolds and McElhenney for some banter. In this case, the pair joke that the “very small” club of Liverpool is up against the “massive” Wrexham. The Wrexham owners can also be heard if you have the club play against rival team Stockport County.

As it stands, it’s unclear whether any other Wrexham match-ups feature Reynolds and McElhenney voiceover. That said, now that people know about this, we may very well come across the pair elsewhere in FIFA 23. It’s likely that people never even knew about any of this because Wrexham is a one-star club, so players presumably weren’t actually using the team — at least, not against bigger clubs like Liverpool.

The story of Wrexham AFC is a fascinating one, as the low-ranking Welsh team was going through a particularly rough patch amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Enter Reynolds and McElhenney, who purchased the club in November 2020 and worked to improve its standings. That entire journey is covered extensively in Welcome to Wrexham, an 18-episode FX docuseries streaming on Disney+ in Canada.

In related news, Reynolds recently renewed hope for his low-cost Mint Mobile carrier coming to Canada.

New Pixel 7 ad takes subtle jabs at FIFA and Qatar

A new Google Pixel 7 World Cup ad that aims to show off the device’s prowess, including its inclusivity features, also doubles as a subtle diss towards FIFA and its decision to ‘sell’ the 2024 World Cup to Qatar.

Titled “Google Pixel 7: The Beautiful Game Belongs to All of Us,” the one-minute-long ad shows off features like Macro Focus, Magic Eraser and Super Res Zoom, while more inclusive features, like Live Translate, Face Unblur, and improved Real Tone photography are also showed off.

Check out the ad below:

The ad also features former Colombian national team captain Carlos Valderrama, and the U.S. Women’s team player Meghan Rapinoem while flags and jerseys of several other participating nations are also clearly depicted in a show of diversity and solidarity.

Fan ‘Pride’ imagery is also spread across the ad, which contrasts the beliefs of the tournament hosts. Qatar’s anti-LGBTQIA+ stance is strict, with fines, prison sentences of up to seven years and even death by stoning.

Participating teams have also been asked not to wear ‘OneLove’ armbands in support of LGBTQ rights during the tournament, and any team captain that does wear the rainbow-coloured band can be penalized with a yellow card.

“We are very frustrated by the FIFA decision, which we believe is unprecedented,” reads England, Wales and the Netherlands’ joint statement.

Elsewhere, harsh treatment of migrant workers, accusations of bribery and corruption, and strict dress codes for female fans, are just a few of the several reasons that paint a not-so-pretty picture of the oil-rich Gulf nation.

“The Beautiful Game Belongs to All of Us,” is an appropriate title for the Google video to point out to FIFA and Qatar that although the tournament is taking place on Qatar’s soil, the game belongs to the fans and the player’s participating, and not people with deep pockets sitting behind desks.

FIFA’s new free-to-use platform gives you access to every FIFA World Cup game ever recorded

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced that it is launching a new digital platform that soccer fans can access around the globe for free.

The new platform, which aims to provide everything soccer, is being called FIFA+ and will give fans access to live games, soccer news, more than 2,000 hours of archival content including documentaries, docuseries and talk shows, and more as part of FIFA+ Originals.

“FIFA+ represents the next step in our vision to make football truly global and inclusive, and it underpins FIFA’s core mission of expanding and developing football globally,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a press statement. “This project represents a cultural shift in the way different types of football fans want to connect with and explore the global game and has been a fundamental part of my Vision 2020-2023. It will accelerate the democratisation of football and we are delighted to share it with fans.”

There also seems to be no subscription option for the platform, so users will likely have to put up with ads in exchange for a free-to-use digital platform.

According to the federation, by the end of 2022, the FIFA+ app will be the go-to hub to stream over 40,000 live games per year from over 100 member associations across all six confederations, including 11,000 women’s matches. As of launch, 1,400 matches will be live-streamed on FIFA+ monthly, with the number set to go up as time passes.

Additionally, the platform will also be host to every FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup game ever recorded, totalling over 2,000 hours of archival games, all available on one platform for free. “The FIFA+ Archive will launch with more than 2,500 videos dating back to the 1950s, with many more to come throughout the year,” reads FIFA’s news release about the platform.

A growing list of FIFA Originals will also continue to hit the platform over the year, with some documentaries and docuseries, including Ronaldinho: The Happiest Man in the World, Dani Crazy Dream, Icons and Golden Boot, already available to stream on the platform.

FIFA+ is available on the web, Android and iOS for free. Upon launch, the platform has soccer content available in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with support for six additional languages coming in June.

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham soccer team is coming to FIFA 22

EA has announced that FIFA 22 will feature Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer team co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

To celebrate, the official Wrexham Twitter account shared a brief video with Reynolds and McElhenney.

The FIFA series typically only includes teams from English Football’s League Two, which Wrexham isn’t a part of. However, it seems that the stars of Deadpool and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia helped make it happen. Reynolds and McElhenney have said that part of their goal in acquiring the club was to make it more of a global brand.

Wrexham will be found in FIFA 22‘s ‘Rest of World’ category, which includes an assortment of clubs that aren’t members of a major FIFA-signed league.

FIFA 22 is developed by EA Vancouver and will release on consoles and PC on October 1st.

Robert De Niro stopped filming for sport

Robert De Niro halted filming on ‘The Intern’ to watch the World Cup.

The 70-year-old actor took a break from shooting ‘The Intern’ in Brooklyn on Thursday (06.26.14) to watch the USA play Germany in the World Cup after finding a group of fans in a nearby house who were hosting a viewing party.

Executives on the movie had originally asked officials at a nearby apartment building to help the movie legend be able to see the game in his trailer.

An email was sent which read: ”Our lead actor, Robert De Niro, would very much like to watch the World Cup game, today at 12 pm.

”Would it be possible to place a small portable satellite on the building rooftop ASAP and run a cable to the street to help facilitate this request?”

However, following the request, a resident stepped in to invite the ‘Taxi Driver’ star to watch it with them.

A neighbor told the Business Insider: ”We got another email from a neighbor saying he talked to the crew and apparently he found a house of people watching it and joined them.”

Production was halted for two hours so the legendary actor could enjoy the game.

Shakira’s boyfriend predicted World Cup baby

Shakira says Gerard Piqué always keeps his promises.

The 37-year-old singer first met her boyfriend when he appeared in her ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ music video, the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and claims the Spanish soccer star predicted at the time that they would have son together before the 2014 competition, which will kick off in Brazil on Thursday (06.12.14).

The blonde beauty – who now has a 16-month-old son, Milan, with Gerard – told E! News: ”It is really cool and it’s kind of like the way everything started almost four years ago when he was about to play in his first World Cup and I was there singing, he told me, ‘I’m going to win this World Cup so I can see you at the finals,’ and he did, he won.

”We started dating and he said to me, ‘The next World Cup we’re going to go together with our baby boy,’ and we’re doing it. So everything he promises, he keeps.”

Despite being very happy together, the Colombian star recently insisted she and Gerard, 27, have no plans to get married.

She said: ”I just don’t find marriage a necessary step in a couple’s life. But are you kidding me? I would marry [Gerard] in a second. We’re just living other moments right now, like having Milan. The last thing we can think of is planning a wedding. Before we finish elaborating on that thought we have to change the next diaper.”
