FIFA 23 players discover Ryan Reynolds cameos months after launch

FIFA 23 players are delighted after discovering that Ryan Reynolds actually has a role in the game.

It’s all thanks to the Vancouver funnyman’s co-ownership of Wales’ Wrexham AFC, the world’s third-oldest football club, alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney. As a result of that increased exposure, EA Vancouver’s last two FIFA games have featured Wrexham as a playable team, although we’re only now finding out, three months after FIFA 23 released, that Reynolds and McElhenney actually recorded lines for EA’s latest soccer sim.

Via Polygon, a match between Wrexham and Liverpool will actually have regular commentators Derek Rae and Stewart Robson briefly pass the mics over to Reynolds and McElhenney for some banter. In this case, the pair joke that the “very small” club of Liverpool is up against the “massive” Wrexham. The Wrexham owners can also be heard if you have the club play against rival team Stockport County.

As it stands, it’s unclear whether any other Wrexham match-ups feature Reynolds and McElhenney voiceover. That said, now that people know about this, we may very well come across the pair elsewhere in FIFA 23. It’s likely that people never even knew about any of this because Wrexham is a one-star club, so players presumably weren’t actually using the team — at least, not against bigger clubs like Liverpool.

The story of Wrexham AFC is a fascinating one, as the low-ranking Welsh team was going through a particularly rough patch amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Enter Reynolds and McElhenney, who purchased the club in November 2020 and worked to improve its standings. That entire journey is covered extensively in Welcome to Wrexham, an 18-episode FX docuseries streaming on Disney+ in Canada.

In related news, Reynolds recently renewed hope for his low-cost Mint Mobile carrier coming to Canada.

EA’s FIFA 23 reported to release on September 30

FIFA 23 is EA’s last FIFA-licensed soccer title, and all forthcoming titles would be called “EA Sports FC.”

Naturally, fans are excited to play the last edition of the title, and now, according to reliable video game leaker Tom Henderson, we know when the title might be coming out.

According to the report, FIFA 23 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X will come out on September 30th, whereas EA Play subscribers would be able to procure the game a week early, around September 23rd.

From what we know so far, FIFA 23 will incorporate women’s soccer leagues to the title, alongside game modes for both men’s and women’s World Cup.

While EA hasn’t officially revealed when the title would come out, according to Henderson, the company would do so in the month of July, specifically in the second half, so we wouldn’t have to wait too long to get official confirmation.

Other than FIFA, Henderson also mentioned that EA will reveal its new Need for Speed and Skate titles in July. Need for Speed “Unbound” is what the game is reportedly being called, whereas Skate is just being called Skate 4.

It’s worth noting that these are just reported leaks, and we recommend that you take them with a grain of salt until EA officially reveals the inevitable upcoming dates.

FIFA 23 will be EA’s last FIFA-licensed title

EA’s FIFA is undoubtedly one of the most successful video game franchise globally.

EA has been releasing FIFA football video games and spin-off editions since 1993, but the publisher and developer confirmed today that the upcoming FIFA 23 will be the last title licensed by FIFA.

The move, however, doesn’t come off as a surprise. In its blog post titled “Comments on the Future of Football” back in October 2021, EA said that it is “exploring the idea of renaming our (its) global EA SPORTS football games.” “We’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world,” said Cam Weber, EA Sports group general manager at the time.

According to EA, its upcoming Football (soccer) titles would be called EA Sports FC, and it would feature all the same mechanics, modes, leagues tournaments and athletes as the current FIFA titles. The upcoming 2023 instalment of the title will retain the FIFA tag, whereas the subsequent 2024 installment will be called EA Sports FC, with or without the ‘2024.’ EA’s FIFA titles are developed by its Vancouver, Canada studio, and from the wording of EA’s blog post, it seems as that the upcoming EA Sports FC would retain the studio.

“We are committed to ensuring the next FIFA is our best ever, with more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions, and players than any FIFA title before,” says EA’s blog post.

EA says that it will provide more information about EA Sports FC in the Summer of 2023.

On the other hand, FIFA hasn’t been so pleasant about its divorce from EA. According to reports, the international governing body of football is looking for investors, developers and publishers to develop its next game, which would directly compete with EA Sports FC.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino also went on record in a self-centred statement that you can read in the embedded Tweet below:
