Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 renders show off thinner and boxier design

A new concept video reveals what Samsung’s often-rumoured Galaxy Z Fold 4 might look like.

This concept comes from Technizo Concept, and it’s based on previous leaks and CAD-based renders.

The Fold 4 sports a more boxy, flatter design compared to last year’s model. The cameras protrude from the back, but there’s no island for the sensors, unlike its predecessor. This is a design that’s evidently inspired by the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The Fold 4’s display is also wider than the Fold 3, and it sports a side-facing fingerprint scanner on the right-hand side alongside its volume up and down buttons.

Unlike previous rumours we’ve seen, this latest leak indicates the Fold 4 won’t feature a storage slot for the S Pen.

It’s possible that the Galaxy Fold 4 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, but when Qualcomm listed the name of partners that will be utilizing the new processor, the company omitted Samsung from the list.

Finally, the Fold 4’s display crease is expected to be not as pronounced as the Fold 3’s, and it will likely feature a smaller hinge.

We expected Samsung to announce the phone in August or September later this year.

Samsung’s Galaxy Flip 4 will reportedly sport minor battery size increase

Samsung’s Galaxy Flip 4 might feature an only a slightly bigger battery than its predecessor.

According to a new rumour from the Dutch publication GalaxyClub, the upcoming foldable will feature a pair of batteries with the model numbers ‘EB-BF721ABY’ and ‘EB-BF722ABY.’ According to the leak, the cells will measure in at 2,400mAh and 903mAh, equalling 3,303mAh in total. With this in mind, Samsung will likely advertise the Flip 4’s battery as featuring 3,400mAh (typical) in capacity.

This battery improvement is minimal as the Flip 3 sports a 3,300mAh battery. In my review of the Flip 3, I noted that the phone’s battery doesn’t last all day, citing it as one of the otherwise solid smartphone’s most significant issues.

I find that if I used the device consistently starting at 9am, it only makes it until roughly 7pm. Checking the Flip 3’s Battery settings reveals that I only ever get at most four and a half hours of screen-on time out of the device.

I doubt that the Flip 4 will offer a better battery experience than its predecessor, unless Samsung has new battery life management techniques in the works. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to launch sometime in August or September.

Samsung says it plans to release new foldable smartphones later this year

In a move that isn’t surprising, Samsung has confirmed during its Q1 2022 earnings call that it has plans to release a new generation of foldable smartphones later in 2022.

“We are currently all hands on deck regarding preparing the new foldable model scheduled for launch in the second half,” said a representative from the company during the call.

Samsung’s mobile vice-president Kim Sung-Koo also stated that the company plans to make foldable smartphones the “main column next to the Galaxy S series within our business.”

Given the success of the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, it makes sense that Samsung is working on successors to both phones. The tech giant likely plans to reveal its new foldables — probably called the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 — in August. Rumours regarding the Z Flip 3 have been sparse, but leaks regarding the Fold 4 have appeared at rapid rate recently. For example, the smartphone is rumoured to feature a design similar to the z Fold 3’s alongside a 108-megapixel camera, and, depending on who you believe, a built-in S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 will reportedly not include built-in S Pen

Months away from its launch, rumours surrounding whether Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 will feature an S Pen are already circulating.

According to the well-known Samsung tipster, Ice Universe, the Fold 4 will not sport a built-in S Pen. Instead, the device is tipped to be slightly smaller and thinner than last year’s model because “no one likes a brick.” While it’s true that no one likes a brick-like smartphone,  rumours regarding the device featuring S Pen support have been swirling for the last few months.

That said, we recently reported a rumour regarding the S Pen entering production, though that doesn’t necessarily confirm that the Galaxy Fold 4 will feature a built-in storage slot.

As someone who uses the Galaxy Fold 3 as their main Android device, I’d prefer a foldable handset that’s smaller/thinner and that doesn’t come with the S Pen. In my review of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I noted that the S Pen wasn’t worth the extra cost, and I imagine I’ll hold the same opinion when the Fold 4 is revealed.

As always, approach these rumours with an air of skepticism, but I hope Ice Universe is right about this one.

Samsung S Pen now in mass production in several countries

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 is rumoured to be the first foldable with a dedicated S Pen holster. This leak seems more credible with the S Pen now in mass production in several Eurasian countries.

However, it’s unclear if this is a new S Pen that is compatible with other Samsung devices. The Fold 3 only supports the S Pen Fold Edition and the S Pen Pro. This S Pen features different frequencies that make it compatible with the Fold 3. Additionally, using the S Pen on other devices can potentially damage the foldable screen.

However, with news of Samsung developing a new type of Ultra-Thin Glass, the screen might be strong enough to work with other S Pens like the one available with the S22 Ultra.

The Fold 4 might launch sometime in August.

Google’s upcoming Play Store changes make it easier to find good apps for tablets

Google announced plans to tweak the Play Store for people with big screen devices to make it easier to find quality apps that work well for large displays like tablets, foldables, or Chromebooks.

The announcement came via a post on Google’s Developers blog. The search giant says it will change how the Play Store ranks and promotes apps, how it displays reviews, alert messages and more.

On devices with big screens, the Play Store will use new logic for ranking and featuring apps that accounts for features like support for different device orientations, keyboard support, and more. The changes should prioritize high-quality apps in rankings.

“This will affect how apps are surfaced in search results and recommendations on the homepage, with the goal of helping users find the apps that are best optimized for their device,” Google explained in the blog post.

The search giant also said it planned to deepen investment in editorial content across Play “to highlight apps that have been optimized for large screens.”

As for reviews, Google plans to tweak the Play Store so it surfaces reviews for similar device types to what you’re using. In other words, Play will show smartphone users reviews left by other smartphone users, while tablet users will see reviews from other tablets users.

Finally, Google said it would change alerts that appear on apps that don’t meet compatibility requirements for large screen devices. The idea is that the alert will give users a better idea of how an app will run on their device after they install it, but Google didn’t provide much detail beyond that it will share more information later in 2022.

The changes to Play Store come as Google develops several improvements for large screen devices, such as the Android 12L update focused on improving the Android experience for tablets and foldables. What’s particularly interesting about the effort is that Google doesn’t make any tablets, foldables, and only one Chromebook (from 2019).

In other words, the company has virtually no skin in the large-screen game — could the work to improve these parts of the Android experience herald new big-screen devices from Google? Perhaps a return of the much-loved Nexus 7 (Pixel 7?) or maybe even a Pixel foldable? Only time will tell.

Apple reportedly working on 20-inch foldable 2-in-1-like MacBook

Have you ever looked at your MacBook Air/Pro and wished it featured a foldable display?

Probably not, right? Well, that hasn’t stopped Apple from reportedly experimenting with foldable display technology in its laptops. In a new report, reputable display analyst Ross Young (Display Supply Chain Consultants)  says that Apple is developing a foldable laptop/2-in-1 that features a 20-inch display.

“We are now showing Apple in our roadmap for foldable notebooks. We hear there is interest at the largest size yet,” Young said in the report, according to Tom’s Guide.

It’s worth pointing out that though the term “notebook” typically refers to a laptop, there’s a possibility this foldable display rumour could be tied to an entirely different device. Young outlines that Apple’s foldable MacBook features an on-screen keyboard while folded and turns into a monitor when unfolded.

That monitor can then be connected to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, like Apple’s Magic Keyboard, for example. It’s unclear exactly how the device will fold. In a sense, the device sounds very similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro line.

Young speculates that the 20-inch display likely features a 4K or higher resolution. Further, he says that the device likely won’t launch until after 2025 and its release date is potentially set for between 2026 and 2027. The analyst goes on to say that Apple’s often-rumoured foldable iPhone project has been delayed to 2025 outside of its original 2023 to 2024 window.

Given foldable smartphones are a relatively established device category now, thanks to Samsung, it makes sense that Apple is at least experimenting in the space. The tech giant has a history of taking technology other companies have popularized and — at least in most cases — improving on it in a notable way. Given how well-received Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are, it’s unclear how Apple could meaningfully build on the foldable concept.
